Acts 9:19b-31 Saul in Damascus and Jerusalem Saul stayed with the believers in Damascus for a few days. 20 And immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogues, saying, He is indeed the Son of God! 21 All who heard him were amazed. Isn t this the same man who caused such devastation among Jesus followers in Jerusalem? they asked.

Acts 9:19b-31 And didn t he come here to arrest them and take them in chains to the leading priests? 22 Saul s preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in Damascus couldn t refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. 23 After a while some of the Jews plotted together to kill him. 24 They were watching for him day and night at the city gate so they could murder him, but Saul was told about their plot.

Acts 9:19b-31 25 So during the night, some of the other believers lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the city wall. 26 When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to meet with the believers, but they were all afraid of him. They did not believe he had truly become a believer! 27 Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them

Acts 9:19b-31 how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus. 28 So Saul stayed with the apostles and went all around Jerusalem with them, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He debated with some Greek-speaking Jews, but they tried to murder him.

Acts 9:19b-31 30 When the believers [c] heard about this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus, his hometown. 31 The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.

Three encouragement qualities displayed by Barnabas An encourager sacrifices for others (Acts 4:32-37)

Acts 4:32-37 The Believers share their possessions 32 All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33 The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God s great blessing was upon them all. 34 There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them

Acts 4:32-37 35 and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need. 36 For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement ). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. 37 He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.

Acts 9:26-31 26 When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to meet with the believers, but they were all afraid of him. They did not believe he had truly become a believer! 27 Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. Three encouragement qualities displayed by Barnabas An encourager sacrifices for others (Acts 4:32-37) An encourager sees the best in others (Acts 9:26-31) An encourager is slow to judge others (Acts 15:36-41)

Acts 15:36-41 Paul and Barnabas separate 36 After some time Paul said to Barnabas, Let s go back and visit each city where we previously preached the word of the Lord, to see how the new believers are doing. 37 Barnabas agreed and wanted to take along John Mark. 38 But Paul disagreed strongly, since John Mark had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in their work.

Acts 15:36-41 39 Their disagreement was so sharp that they separated. Barnabas took John Mark with him and sailed for Cyprus. 40 Paul chose Silas, and as he left, the believers entrusted him to the Lord s gracious care. 41 Then he traveled throughout Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches there.

Three encouragement qualities displayed by Barnabas An encourager sacrifices for others (Acts 4:32-37) An encourager sees the best in others (Acts 9:26-31) An encourager is slow to judge others (Acts 15:36-41)

There is a pattern of behaviour here that you and I can choose to follow today. Every one of us can become a person of encouragement. Every one of us can earn the privilege of having such words to describe us.

Every one of us can be used by God to bring much needed encouragement to those around us. And it can happen if we are willing to commit ourselves to building these three basic character qualities of Barnabas in our lives.

What to do if you are discouraged Make a list of how God has come through for you in the past. Read and seek direction from the Bible Pray truthfully, confessing discouragement to God Worship God Speak with a close Christian friend, minister, etc. Who can help guide you out of your discouragement. Don t give up! Galatians 6:9 So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.

Deuteronomy 31:8 8 Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Romans 8:31-39 Nothing Can Separate Us from God s Love 31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God s right hand, pleading for us.

Romans 8:31-39 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. ) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

Romans 8:31-39 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow not even the powers of hell can separate us from God s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
