Edward and Lucy teaches, proclaims and lives the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do so through the celebration of the Eucharist, the administration of the sacraments and in loving and merciful service to all.

Now that we have finished our 2018 Vacation Bible School, we are grateful to Sister Rosemary and all the generous people who made VBS a worthwhile experience for our young people. As with any parish event, things like this do not happen unless people step forward and make them happen...vbs is part of our parish religious education program and religious education is all about happiness. You my think this is a simplistic statement, but I cannot find happiness unless I know where to look. We believe God has given us inside knowledge that leads us to make the choices that lead us to happiness. We learned and we want to teach our young both at home and in Generations of Faith what happiness is not: it is not wealth, pleasure, fame, honors or power. They are not happiness and they often are obstacles to real happiness when they entrap us with enjoyments that are fleeting and unsatisfying. Many things in life can give us pleasure but they cannot be equated with happiness. We have been devoting a lot of time to discussing parish Youth Ministry precisely because we do not want our young to be misled to the point where they find a truly empty life going nowhere. We sometimes teach our young ourselves that the pursuit of wealth, pleasure, fame, honors and power are where they should seek to excel. Maybe we learned that from society, but that is not real Christianity. Jesus calls us to look higher and seek more in life. He cautions us that we will be sorely disappointed because we look for happiness and joy in places where they cannot be found. Our whole religious education program takes on a special importance because of this. After Mass and Sacraments, the next most important undertaking of a parish is religious education. This program increases real happiness just as learning about a friend or partner allows our intimacy with them to expand and deepen. As we seek a way ahead in our Youth ministry, we don t need to be reminded of how important it is to the life of our parish. We have done a study to explore the cost of such a program and how we can afford the extra expense of employing at least a part-time person to develop and get a program on its feet here among us. More details will follow for your consideration.... IT S A MATTER OF LIFE... When people believe in something, you do not see them desperately trying to avoid being linked to the activity with which their movement is identified. For example, those who support the death penalty do not mind being called pro-death penalty. People who work for animal rights, do not mind being called pro-animal rights. People who support the Second Amendment do not mind being called pro-gun, and the list goes on and on. The one exception is people who support legal abortion. Although they vigorously defend abortionʹs legality, they do everything possible to avoid being called pro-abortion. Clearly, they are advocating the legality of an activity which is not only repugnant, but which even they know is indefensible. If that were not the case, they would not become so outraged at being called pro-abortion....do you not yet have faith? The work Jesus did was very hard. Talking to the large crowds, comforting the oppressed, healing the sick, and dealing with growing hostility took a heavy toll. That s the only way to explain today s Gospel. The boat is caught in a great storm and the apostles are panicking. And what is he doing? Nothing! He s asleep in front. The effect on them is very interesting. They are fighting for their lives and Jesus seems totally out of it. Do you not care that we are perishing? Jesus is not a sailor like them. Once he s awake, he stills the storm and calms the waves. Now, it s his turn to complain. Why are you terrified? Do you really think anything could happen to you while I am with you? They ask, Who is this whom even the wind and the sea obey? For the first time they wonder if he might really be God himself in some way. God looks and sounds like he did in our first reading from the Book of Job. He asks Job, Who shut within doors the sea? We all go through times in our lives when the seas are rough, and the waves are too much for us, and we feel in danger of sinking. At times like that, Jesus can seem to be asleep, deaf to our cries for help. But he s never out of touch, And he wants to ask us, Why are you terrified? After all I have done, do you think I could ever abandon you? Sometimes our life is hard work, and we can feel overwhelmed and alone, but we really aren t. He is with us and the storm will pass. (James DiGiacomo, SJ)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three nativity feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today s birth of the Baptist. Today s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child s advent, but of Elizabeth s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sundrenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting St. John s fires in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It s a tradition! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Tickets go on sale soon.
