Pastor Bill Dobson Capitol City Church Des Moines, IA 515.661.9605 bill@capcitymail.com My Story I was born into a Christian family that was heavily involved in church. We attended church every Sunday and Wednesday, as well as special events like Vacation Bible School, and my parents were involved in serving. Around the age of eight, I trusted Jesus as my Savior and was baptized. Shortly after that my family was torn apart by divorce and for years, none of us attended church at all, and didn t pay much attention to God. When I was 15, I knew I needed something to fill the hollowness in my life and began to go to a great local church. Unfortunately, after a few months, I decided to walk away and tried filling that hollowness with just about Objective After 20 years of serving on staff at a great and growing church, it is my sincere prayer that God would lead me to a church where my gifts and experience will be useful to lead the church and where we can grow together and effectively reach the world around us. Experience I have served at Capitol City Church in Des Moines, IA, since 1993, first as a volunteer, then as a paid staff member. Under the leadership of three different Pastors, I have served in a variety of positions (Children s Pastor, Associate Pastor, Ministry Pastor, Family Pastor, Interim Pastor) and ministries. Capitol City Church (formerly Capitol City Baptist Church) is an independent Church affiliated with the Baptist Bible Fellowship. The attendance was around 300 when I first joined the staff, and grew to over 800. After a recent change in pastors, the church is currently running around 700, with four full-time pastors and eight part-time employees. We have three Sunday morning services, Wednesday night ministries, and other events and activities for fellowship, growth and outreach. Family Ministry My primary ministry at Capitol City has been working with kids and families. This includes direct ministry with kids through teaching and events, and indirect ministry through overseeing many great volunteers in Kids Church, Sunday School and AWANA. I also lead two part-time employees in our Early Childhood ministry. Pastoral Care One of my favorite aspects of ministry is pastoral care. I believe it is a privilege to be present for people as they go through big moments in their lives. During my time at Capitol City I have had the opportunity to welcome new guests, visit the elderly, make hospital visits and officiate at many weddings and funerals.

everything else. This path led me to darker and darker places. When I was about 20 years old, some of my family started going to church again. My older brother was led to Christ at that time and made every effort to get me involved in his church. When I finally gave in, it was such a relief. After trying everything else, I realized that Jesus was the only fulfilling answer to give my life meaning, purpose and direction. I recommitted my life to Christ. I felt such regret about wasting the precious years between age 15 and 20. I knew I had missed that opportunity to grow in my knowledge of God and in my spiritual maturity. I decided the best way to catch up was by attending Bible College. Those years radically changed the trajectory of my life. Not only did I grow in my knowledge of Preaching and Teaching I enjoy preaching and teaching the Word of God to adults, and have had many opportunities to participate in that ministry. I have taught our Senior Citizens Class, Men s Bible Study and a class for our Sunday School Teachers. I have facilitated sessions of Financial Peace University and The Truth Project. I have also served as the relief preacher for our Lead Pastors when they were on vacation or needed a break. To see examples of my preaching, go to www.capitolcitychurch.com and click on the Watch tab. Then scroll down to January 7, 2018. Or scroll further to most Sundays in 2016. Interim Pastor During two church transitions I have served as Interim Pastor. The first time began as I was finishing seminary in 2001. The second time was in 2016. Both times I met with the deacons on a regular basis, preached on Sunday mornings (multiple services), worked with the staff to prepare for Sunday mornings and special events, and offered the church stability and leadership through difficult situations. Outreach Events I have led many outreach efforts of our church, from big events like the Easter EGGstravaganza, Pumpkin Party and Vacation Bible School, to smaller local community outreaches. Small Group Ministries I have overseen our small group ministries, including Adult Bible Fellowships (ABFs) and Community Life Groups (CLGs). For ABFs (which meet weekly at church), I met with leaders, helped with hospitality and promotion, and provided curriculum and substitute teaching. For CLGs (which met monthly for nine months a year in homes), I recruited leaders and hosts, organized groups, and provided curriculum. Global Missions I have always had a strong heart for Global Missions. I have participated in four missions trips overseas, serving as the leader of two of those trips. I recently created a Missions Team which has the responsibilities of making missions spending recommendations and promoting missions within our church. Youth Ministry After our church had a couple of rough situations with youth pastors, our Lead Pastor asked me to run our Youth Ministry so he could have time to really search for and evaluate our next youth pastor prospect. Although this was a brief time (about seven months), I learned a lot about this area of ministry in the

God s Word, I met my wife, found a great new church family, and became convinced God was leading me into fulltime ministry. During my time in Bible College, my church hired me as a janitor, then as a Children s Pastor. In my 25 years serving there I have held many other titles and have been involved in nearly every ministry area. I have experienced great years at Capitol City Church, and some trying times. I was committed to stay until I was convinced God was leading me to leave. I believe that time has come. It used to be that I could not imagine serving anywhere else. Now I look forward to what God has in store for me and my family as He leads us to a new church family. church. I taught the youth on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights, planned activities and took them to an evangelistic conference. Working with youth is not my strength, but during my time in that position, God blessed and the ministry grew. Other Experiences I have had the chance to lead a Noah s Ark musical (with live animals and a great choir and cast). I have been involved with the marketing of our church, creating informational pamphlets and booklets, creating newspaper ads and roadside banners. I have also made booklets for special events (Christmas, Easter) and Missions Conferences. I have had the opportunity to do some counseling with couples and with kids. I was involved at the design level of our Student Center building project and our major remodel of our Early Childhood area. Family I met my wife Grace during my first year in Bible College and we were married in 1993. She is my best friend, my partner in ministry and my number one volunteer. Grace serves as an AWANA Director, a Sunday School Teacher, and assists me in leading Kids Church and activities. She has also directed many kids musicals. Together we are raising four amazing girls Carissa (20), Natasha (18), Mikayla (15) and Sierra (13). To Whom It May Concern I have attended Capitol Church and known Bill Dobson for his entire 20+ years at our church. My family and I have had the privilege of being under Bill s ministry and I have served on the board and as chairman for many of those years. Bill has a true heart for God, the highest compliment I can give him. He clearly loves the Lord and loves people. Bill has a servant s heart and as you can see from his resume, he has served in many different ministries as our church has grown. Bill is loved by everyone in our church and especially by families. Bill has preached for us on the many occasions over the years when our lead pastor was on vacation, mission trips, etc. In his tenure, we have replaced just two pastors and Bill was our interim pastor both times. These can be difficult times for a church, but Bill not only held our church together, he provided tremendous spiritual leadership, great preaching and wisdom as part of the search team. In case you re wondering, as we began the search process, Bill was the first person we approached. He felt the church was too large and was more interested in serving and ministry than being in a full time management role. Bill is a tremendous preacher. He connects with people, his messages are scriptural and interesting and our entire church loves his preaching. You should listen to his recorded messages. Bill is a tremendous pastor. His empathy and compassion for people make him very effective in performing weddings and funerals, and in calling on those in need such as hospital and hospice visits. Bill also has a gift in administration, organization and planning. Everything Bill manages is well organized and well run. I cannot give Bill a more heartfelt reference. We will miss him greatly but he has tremendous support here for his calling to become a lead pastor in a church where he can have hands-on impact on the lives of his congregation and preach full time. Bill s family is also a great testament to his ministry. He and Grace are absolute partners in ministry and Grace actually led our children s ministry while Bill was preaching for us during our search 2 years ago. Bill s girls are totally involved in serving in the church as well. They are faithful in children s ministries, help us put on fantastic Bible School events and are always on call when needed. Again, I cannot give Bill too strong of a reference. He had the confidence in us to let us know he was going to begin seeking God s will for his future ministry and allow us to participate with him. And we have the love and confidence in Bill to support him completely. If you have any questions or would like to talk further, I would welcome a call! Sincerely, Kevin Prendergast Cell: 515-314-6948

To Whom It May Concern: This is a letter of recommendation for Pastor Bill Dobson. I have known Pastor Bill for sixteen years. During a part of that time I volunteered in children s ministry; I was hired to be the Early Childhood Director under him three and a half years ago. Working closely with Pastor Bill, I have had the opportunity to observe his godly character and his servant s heart; and while there are many great qualities of Pastor Bill, I would like to highlight how, as a supervisor, he is approachable, an effective communicator, an efficient problem solver, and a godly example of integrity. The first quality I appreciate about Pastor Bill is his approachability. As the person I report to directly, I have always been able to come to him with my questions, concerns, and ideas. He patiently listens and offers godly insight along with practical solutions. He has always been able to make me and the people of our church feel comfortable and valued. Another great leadership quality of Pastor Bill is his ability to communicate. His sermons are both insightful and engaging. He is able to calmly diffuse situations with helpful ideas and constructive suggestions in a non-combative way, and he clearly and concisely coordinates with staff members and volunteers, all of which demonstrate his effective communication skills. The third quality I want to mention regarding Pastor Bill is his talent for anticipating potential problematic situations and effectively providing solutions, often before they become problematic. He has had experience in nearly every area of ministry of our church over the last twenty years and this has given him a comprehensive understanding of almost every aspect of ministry. One example of Pastor Bill s ability to anticipate possible problems and create contingency plans can be seen in our annual Easter Egg Hunt event. He arranges an alternative egg hunt location in case of inclement weather; relays pertinent information to volunteers; and remains calm during unforeseen circumstances, such as one year when we experienced a street-wide power outage. Finally, and most importantly, one of the most vital qualities every pastor or leader needs is the quality of personal integrity. I want to know that when my pastor says he s going to do something he will follow through with it. This has consistently been my experience with Pastor Bill all the years that I ve known him. One personal example is when my daughter was going through some medical issues, Pastor Bill told me he would be praying for us. Not only did he let me know, on the day we met with a specialist, that he was praying, he followed up with us that week about the results. I ve always thought of Pastor Bill as the heartbeat of our church. He serves with an unselfish spirit that can only come from his love and relationship with Jesus Christ. His unselfish spirit can be seen in how easily people can approach him; how well he communicates with church members and visitors, from children to seniors and everyone in between; how he applies himself in difficult situations, formulates and shares workable solutions, and remains steady when unexpected complications arise; and, above all, how he is an excellent example of a person of integrity. In my opinion, Pastor Bill Dobson would be an exceptional addition to your ministry and I give him my highest recommendation. If you have any questions regarding my letter of recommendation for Pastor Bill Dobson, please feel free to contact me.
