THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS LUKE 4:5-8
HEBREWS 4:14-16 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens Jesus the Son of God let us hold fast to our confession.
HEBREWS 4:14-16 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.
HEBREWS 4:14-16 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
THREE PARTS: 1. Jesus is tempted 2. Jesus is given a condition 3. Jesus resists the temptation
1. Jesus is tempted
Luke 4:5-7 5 So he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
Luke 4:5-7 6 The devil said to him, I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want.
Luke 4:5-7 7 If you, then, will worship me, all will be yours.
What is the temptation?
Two aspects of temptation: a. The world
John 12:31 31 Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
John 14:30 30 I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me.

Ephesians 2:1-2 2 in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air.
Job 1:6-12 6 One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them.
Job 1:6-12 7 The Lord asked Satan, Where have you come from? From roaming through the earth, Satan answered him, and walking around on it.
Job 1:6-12 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.
Job 1:6-12 9 Satan answered the Lord, Does Job fear God for nothing?
Job 1:6-12 10 Haven t you placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
Job 1:6-12 11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will surely curse you to your face.
Job 1:6-12 12 Very well, the Lord told Satan, everything he owns is in your power. However, do not lay a hand on Job himself. So Satan left the Lord s presence.
Genesis 3:1-6 1 Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Did God really say, You can t eat from any tree in the garden?
Genesis 3:1-6 2 The woman said to the serpent, We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden.
Genesis 3:1-6 3 But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.
Genesis 3:1-6 4 No! You will not die, the serpent said to the woman.
Genesis 3:1-6 5 In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
Genesis 3:1-6 6 The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Two aspects of temptation: b. To avoid the road of suffering set before Him
Psalm 2:7-8 7 I will declare the Lord s decree. He said to me, You are my Son; today I have become your Father.
Psalm 2:7-8 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance and the ends of the earth your possession.

2. Jesus is given a condition

Romans 12:1 1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.
How do you know what you are worshiping?
Anything in my life that occupies the place that should be occupied by God alone. An idol is anything that holds such a controlling position in my life that it moves and rouses and attracts me so easily that I give my time, my attention, my energy, and my money to it effortlessly. Martin Lloyd-Jones
3. Jesus resists the temptation
How does Jesus resist the temptation?
How does Jesus resist: 1. Jesus knew the word of God
What specifically does He know?
Jesus knew the word of God: a. Jesus knew the consequences of worshipping someone or something other than God.
Luke 4:8 8 And Jesus answered him, It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.
Mark 8:34-37 34 Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

Mark 8:34-37 36 For what does it benefit someone to gain the whole world and yet lose his life?
Mark 8:34-37 37 What can anyone give in exchange for his life?
Jesus knew the word of God: a. Jesus knew the consequences of worshipping someone or something other than God. b. Jesus knew that the devil was a liar.
John 8:44 44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
How does Jesus resist: 1. Jesus knew the word of God 2. By submitting to the will of God
Application 1. Know that the world and all it offers will never satisfy you, but will leave you empty.

Hebrews 11:23-26 26 For he considered reproach for the sake of Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, since he was looking ahead to the reward.
Application 2. Invest time in the Word of God.
Ephesians 6:17 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.
PSALM 119:11 11 I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.
Application 3. Guard what you watch.
Application 4. Submit to God s will.
James 4:7 7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Application 5. Go to God
