The Stained Glass Windows of Immanuel Lutheran Church

The History of the Stained Glass Windows at Immanuel Lutheran Church Pastor Everett G. Grese produced the overall plan of the windows. He wanted familiar pictures which would vividly convey Scriptural messages to viewers. He chose the center picture to accentuate the theme of each panel of three stained glass windows. And he provided the Bible passages which are the source of the events and actions depicted in the windows. Mickey (Mrs. Ralph L.) Laukhuff, a member of Immanuel and the head of the stained glass department of Binswanger & Company in Memphis, designed the entire series. She drew her initial inspiration from pictures furnished her by Pastor Grese from the covers of Sunday school children s lesson leaflets. For the background she used handblown Belko glass from West Virginia, and for the figures she selected stained glass from Germany and southern France. Immanuel has 27 stained glass windows 24 in our sanctuary and 3 in our narthex (lobby area). These windows were originally installed in our church building on North Highland Street that building was built in 1955 and was home to Immanuel until 1990. When we sold the Highland building to bring our church and school together on the same campus the windows were saved and placed in storage. In 1996 the windows were installed where they are currently located in our church at 6325 Raleigh LaGrange Rd. The Annunciation The Angel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary that she would conceive of the Holy Spirit and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. Luke 1:26-38 The Birth of Jesus As Micah 5:2 foretold, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. What mystery! God became a human being to save us! Luke 2:1-7 Angel and the Shepherds After one angel told the joyous news of Jesus birth, a multitude of angels glorified God and proclaimed God s good pleasure to people. Luke 2:8-14

The Flight to Egypt God the Father safeguarded His Son from death before the appointed time! Matthew 2:13-15 The Twelve Year Old Jesus in the Temple Jesus showed His commitment to God the Father and to the Scriptures above all, yet His submission to His parents and elders. Luke 2:41-52 The Baptism of Jesus While John baptized Jesus, God the Father spoke and the Spirit descended to inaugurate and empower Jesus to fulfill all righteousness for fallen humanity. Matthew 3:13-17

Calling the Disciples Jesus called twelve disciples to share life in Him and to carry on His mission for the salvation of sinful, mortal humanity. Luke 5:8-1 Jesus Blesses the Children Jesus came to open the kingdom of God to children and to people of all ages who live with childlike trust in Him. Mark 10:13-16 Jesus Walks on Water Faith is great when one trusts in Christ as great for safeguarding us over life s tempestuous seas and great with compassion to save us unto eternal life. Matthew 14:22-33

The Lord's Supper In Holy Communion the Lord Jesus gives us His Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins and for strength to live in newness of life in Him. Matthew 26:26-29 Jesus in Gethsemane With fervent and faithful prayer to the Father, Jesus prepared for His final battle with Satan, sin and death on the cross to restore mortal humans to God s eternal kingdom. Matthew 26:36-46 Christ Before Pilot Roman Governor Pontius Pilate declared, Behold the man innocent of the charges! Three years earlier, John the Baptist had testified, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) John 19:1-7

The Burial of Jesus After completing His work of redeeming humanity from Satan and death, Jesus rested in the tomb on the seventh day. John 19:38-42 The Resurrection On the first day of the week, by the power of God, Jesus rose from the dead. His resurrection changes us from fallen creation to God s new creation. Mark 16:1-8 The Appearance to Mary The risen Lord Jesus awesomely and lovingly revealed Himself as risen from the dead, and as returning to the Father. John 20:11-18

The Great Commission Until the end of this world, Christ is always with us. Making disciples is our lifetime commission and commitment in Christ. Matthew 28:18-20 The Ascension Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven. The Acts of the Apostles reveals the mighty working of the ascended Christ through the Church in the world, until He comes again. Acts 1:9-11 King of Kings and Lord of Lords The Book of Revelation portrays the exalted Christ delivering God s saints from evil and granting the crown of everlasting life to all faithful believers. Revelation 11:15

The Good Shepherd He who freely laid down His life for the sheep and raised it up from the dead gives fullness of life to them. John 10:11-17 Pentecost Ten days after Jesus ascension, the promised Holy Spirit descended on the disciples. The Holy Spirit turns people s hearts from rebellion against God to joyous faith, holiness of living and courageous witness. Acts 2:1-13 The Healing of a Lame Man by Peter and John Bold witness and compassionate healing in the name of Christ move some to glorify God and others to persecute Christians. Acts 3:1-10

The Death of Stephen The Scriptures transformed Stephen for depth of faith, humble service, mighty testimony to Christ, and calmness of trust in Christ even in martyrdom. Acts 7:54-60 The Conversion of Saul Saul, a zealous persecutor of the Church, received the overflowing grace of the Lord Jesus Christ for becoming the Apostle Paul. Acts 9:1-9 The Martyrs In fact, every one who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 2 Timothy 3:12

Nailing of the '95 Theses October 31, 1517 Luther fervently believed that our good works do not supplement or earn God s grace, but that the saving grace of the Lord Jesus engenders and empowers our good works. Ephesians 2:8-9 Luther at Worms April 17, 1521 Before emperor and church prelates, Luther refused to recant his teaching and writings which declared that we are saved solely by God s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 3:21-28 The Church Today Confirmation is an outgrowth of Holy Baptism, and strengthens those who publicly renounce Satan, commit life to God the Father, Son and Spirit, and dedicate self to the life and mission of the Body of Christ in the world. Matthew 10:32-33
