The Ascension of Our Lord Christ Reigns over All! Thoughts of Preparation The Ascension reminds us that Jesus is not in heaven idly waiting for us to show up. He s our reigning King! He rules over all the nations, His Church, our lives. When these things seem out of control, the Ascension strengthens and comforts us with the knowledge that Jesus is in control and works through all things to accomplish His will. Welcome Invocation In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Call to Worship (From Psalm 47 and Ephesians 1:21-22) Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! God has gone up with a shout, The LORD with the sound of a trumpet. Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, And above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne. [God] put all things under his feet And gave Him as head over all things to the church. Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! Hymn Crown Him with Many Crowns (Lutheran Service Book (LSB) 525 vs. 1 & 5) Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne; Hark how the heav nly anthem drowns All music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee, And Hail Him as thy matchless king Through all eternity. Crown Him the Lord of heav n, Enthroned in worlds above, Crown Him the king to whom is giv n The wondrous name of Love. Crown Him with many crowns As thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, For He is king of all. Page 1 of 5

Confession of Sins All: Let us bow before our heavenly King and acknowledge our unworthiness. Lord Jesus, we confess that we often fail to trust in You as our reigning King. Failure to trust that You are in charge leads us to think we are. We make choices based upon what seems right to us rather than upon what is right. Our thoughts, words, and deeds become subject to our will rather than Yours. Our way of dealing with problems reflects the world s way rather than Yours. Have mercy upon us, King Jesus. Forgive our lack of trust and the many sins that result. Restore in us faithful hearts and trusting spirits. Take courage people of God. When the Apostle John saw Jesus ascend into the throne room, he saw Him as a Lamb as though it had been slain. Our King is also Our Savior! His blood cleanses us from all sin. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ the King, I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Hymn of Praise Christ Sits at God s Right Hand (LSB 564 vs. 6) All praise to Christ we bring, Our Lord who intercedes, Our great High Priest enthroned above Who knows our needs; And to the Father sing Our songs of thankful praise, Who with the Spirit reigns in love For endless days. Prayer of the Day Let us pray to our Ascended Lord and King. Lord Jesus, You sit at the right hand of the throne of God and have all things under Your feet. Renew our hearts that we might daily trust in your gracious rule in and over Your people and reflect that trust in the choices we make. We pray in Your name, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen! Reading of God s Word First Reading Acts 1:1-11 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. Page 2 of 5

So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. Epistle Ephesians 1:15-23 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel Luke 24:44-53 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 24 th chapter. Glory to You, O Lord Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they Page 3 of 5

worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God. This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to You, O Christ. Hymn of the Day O God of God, O Light of Light (LSB 810) O God of God, O Light of Light, O Prince of Peace and King of Kings: To You in heaven s glory bright The song of praise forever rings. To Him who sits upon the throne, The Lamb once slain but raised again, Be all the glory He has won, All thanks and praise! Amen, amen. For deep in prophets sacred page, And grand in poets winged word, Slowly in type, from age to age The nations saw their coming Lord; Till through the deep Judean night Rang out the song, Good will to men! Sung once by firstborn sons of light, It echoes now, Good will! Amen. That life of truth, those deeds of love, That death so steeped in hate and scorn These all are past, and now above He reigns, our King once crowned with thorn. Lift up your heads, O mighty gates! So sang that host beyond our ken. Lift up your heads, your King awaits. We lift them up, Amen, amen. Then raise to Christ a mighty song, And shout His name, His mercies tell! Sing, heav nly host, your praise prolong, And all on earth, your anthem swell! All hail, O Lamb for sinners slain! Forever let the song ascend! Worthy the Lamb, enthroned to reign, All glory, pow r! Amen, amen. Proclamation of the Word Creed Offering Prayers Worthy are You, Ascended Jesus, to enter the throne room in heaven on our behalf. For you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation (Revelation 5:9). Worthy are You, Lamb of God, to have all things placed under Your feet and to rule over all for the sake of Your Church. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! (Revelation 5:12) Increase our faith and trust in Your gracious rule in our lives, help us rest secure in Your hands knowing You control all things. Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control (Hebrews 2:8b). Page 4 of 5

We commend the following into Your hands trusting in Your mercy and Your will. (Special petitions may be offered here. The following may be used after each petition.) Hear us, ascended Christ. Nothing is outside Your control. Because You are seated at His right hand, we bow before the throne of Your Father and are bold to pray, Our Father Benediction The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen! The Lord our God the Almighty reigns (Revelation 19:6b). Hymn On Christ s Ascension I Now Build (LSB 492) On Christ s ascension I now build The hope of my ascension; This hope alone has always stilled All doubt and apprehension; For where the Head is, there as well I know His members are to dwell When Christ will come and call them. O grant, dear Lord, this grace to me, Recalling Your ascension, That I may serve You faithfully In thanks for my redemption; And then, when all my days will cease, Let me depart in joy and peace In answer to my pleading. Since Christ returned to claim His throne, Great gifts for me obtaining, My heart will rest in Him alone, No other rest remaining; For where my treasure went before, There all my thoughts will ever soar To still their deepest yearning.
