ISSUE ISSUE 3, 2018 4 MESSAGE FROM OUR COMMUNITY LD Summer is slipping away and that means fall will soon be upon us, to include the 2018 Women s Walk September 27-30 at Hesperus Camp. If you want to get involved in this walk, contact a board committee representative for one of several support areas: facility set-up, music & entertainment, sponsor s hour & candlelight, supplies & literature, etc. The list goes on and on. Preparation for walks should not just be left up to the board! The entire community should get involved. Has God been tapping you on the shoulder lately to help out? In an effort to save postal expenses and be prudent with our use of God s beautiful trees, we will soon be transitioning to electronic distribution of FCEC newsletters. If you do not have an e-mail address or if you want to continue receiving your newsletter via USPS send an email with this information to info@fourcornersemmaus.com with Newsletter in the subject line. Otherwise, begin looking for pithy prose like this by booting up. (Work with us on this folks. This cyber stuff is as tough on me as anyone! I still have a rolodex.) Finally, I have been reminded lately of the importance of unity, not just within the FCEC but within the entire Community of Christ. Paul states it very succinctly in his letter to the Ephesians: Make every effort to keep unity in the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to one hope when you were called one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph 4: 3-6) We have been through some tough times in recent weeks. We have suffered from dissension, disagreement, anger, hurt feelings, rumors, and foolish pride. I would encourage us all to place that behind us and move ahead with unity of purpose. During our July meeting, the FCEC board gathered together in prayer and decided to do just that. Please join us. Warmest Greetings Emmaus Family Prayer and preparation are in overdrive as we approach the 2018 Women s Walk to Emmaus. At present, 21 ladies are planning to attend the 72 hour celebration at Hesperus Camp, September 27-30. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. I was reflecting upon my Christian discipleship last night and a phrase was placed upon my heart. Make a friend. Be a friend. Bring a friend to Christ. This was a part of Emmaus talk #8 during a Walk weekend. That talk is titled Christian Action. I immediately realized how neglectful I have been in performing this simple but necessary discipleship responsibility. I know that this must change for me now! I was fortunate and blessed to be a volunteer at Treehouse After School program (a ministry of Riverstone Church) for the past two years. The Children s ministry director, and founder of the program, was very involved with the kids on a daily basis. Each afternoon, she would gather the students (1st-5th grade) in a circle to pray and inquire about their time at school. Each child was given the task of performing intentional acts of kindness for their classmates, teachers and others every day. As the school year progressed, the kids became more and more enthusiastic in reporting the efforts they were making. Each act of kindness reported was rewarded with two claps, and a Jesus loves you cheer. The kids were also encouraged daily to make a new friend...especially with kids that were sitting alone at lunchtime or isolated on the playground. The director reminded the children continually that they needed to be a good friend as they made new friends because that was very important. She said that by learning to be kind and making friends, they could change the world! WOW!!! I would like to invite everyone to join me in a lifelong commitment in watching for opportunities to display kindness. How about intentionally making new friends as often as possible? Here are a few ideas to start off 1) Introduce yourself to your neighbors 2) Compliment a stranger 3) Hold the door open for someone 4) Let the person behind you at the grocery store check out first 5) Be encouraging 6) Help someone who s having car trouble 7) Share, even if you don t want to 8) Tip generously 9) Say hello and smile always 10) Listen intently and be understanding 11) Forgive 12) Apologize when you error 13) Be happy for others 14) Recognize others success We live in a society that is desperate for kindness and caring attention. Let s start now to meet that need, with an outpouring of kindness to all we encounter. Consider everyone a potential friend and become that friend. The light of the Holy Spirit living in us will take it from there and ultimately call them to Christ. We have the blessing of knowing the Good News of grace and salvation. Individually and together, we can change the world! De Colores, Pete THANK YOU SPONSORS Yeah! There were 20 women s walk applications turned in by June 15, so, the walk is a go! God is good! It will be September 27-30 and will be held at Hesperus Baptist Camp in Hesperus, Colorado. It will be walk #32 and the cost is $200.00. Applications are still being accepted but must be in by September 1, 2018. You will be blessed by giving this blessing to someone. Please know, Lisbeth Smith is assisting me with the registration. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with the prayerful discernment and invitation from a sponsor. Sponsors, if your potential pilgrim is married; be sure to talk with both your potential pilgrim and their spouse. There are resources for sponsors on the FCEC website: Sponsor checklist and sample agape letter request -www.fourcornersemmaus.com. Resources are also available from Upper Room as listed in the last newsletter. Sponsors, your obligation to your pilgrim begins when you turn in the application. 1) You should be gathering letters from family and friends now. Please put your pilgrim s first and last name on the face of the envelope. If the letter is from a family member, their clergy (be sure to ask them to write a letter), or yourself, please put an F in the upper left corner of the envelope. Only twelve letters will be put in a pilgrim s letter bag; the rest will be given to you at closing to give to your pilgrim on the way home. 2) Confirm your pilgrim s attendance with the registrar. 3) Prayerfully consider leaving cell phones, pagers, and Smart phones at home for the weekend. 4) When you pick up your pilgrim, sponsors do not let your pilgrim carry their luggage you put their luggage in the car. 5) Take your pilgrim out to dinner on your way to camp. Remember NO food is served Thursday. 6) After arriving at camp, you get your pilgrim checked in and you take their luggage to their room. 7) After you send the pilgrims off to the conference room, it is imperative that you stay for Sponsor s Hour where additional information may be given and you will pray over your pilgrim s cross. 8) Check-in with the family throughout the weekend to see if your assistance is needed. 9) Attend Candlelight Saturday night. 10) Attend Closing Sunday and take your pilgrim home. 11) Take your pilgrim to the first gathering. 12) Get your pilgrim involved in a reunion group. Have Fun! Checklist for pilgrims to take to camp: comfortable clothesmost of the time will be spent in the conference room. However, occasional outdoor periods may necessitate a sweater or jacket; toilet articles, towels, and wash cloths; medications; bedding (sheets and blankets or a sleeping bag and pillow); a small flashlight; consider bringing an umbrella if you think the weather forecast requires it; cash or checkbook - while there will not be any direct costs for the Walk during the weekend, many excellent books for sale will be offered which you may wish to purchase for your own library or as a gift. Additionally, the camp director has several varieties of Christian T-shirts and caps available for sale. Most books and articles are $20 or less. Credit cards are not accepted for either. With Christ, Pam Grubb 2

FOURTH DAY NEWS E 72 HOUR PRAYER VIGIL Everyone knows by now that the 2018 Women s Walk, September 27-30 is a GO! Let s not forget the power of prayer in lifting up the pilgrims and participants of this walk. We are still looking for points-of-contact to solicit volunteers to pray for the walk. If you know folks in your church or community that want to be of service, or if you want to serve as a point-of-contact, e-mail me at info@fourcornersemmaus.com, subject line Roger Scott. Remember that prayer volunteer forms are divided into small, 12-person segments, thereby spreading the work load evenly among several points of contact. If you want to get involved, you may also contact Kathy LaMotte at the same e-mail address. Roger Scott 72 Hour Prayer Vigil Chair Hope that everyone is enjoying their summer activities, vacations & excursions! We are NOT having a San Juan monthly gathering in July. However, we will have a Four Corners monthly gathering in the park to kickoff our new year! Our Picnic in the Park will be on Saturday, August 25th at Brookside Park in Farmington, NM. Everyone in the Four Corners community is invited to attend. Hot dogs & hamburgers will be provided. Please bring chips, side dishes, deserts & drinks to share with others. We will meet in the west pavilion near the children's playground. Please bring games to play with others. I hope that maybe some in our community might have Cornhole (beanbag) toss games that we can play. I know we will have Bocci ball game & Ladderball games to play. If anyone is interested in playing golf at the Civitan par 3 course prior to starting at 4:00 PM then let me know & perhaps we could organize a 2 person blind draw golf outing. Let me know if this would interest any of our members. The cost to play the par 3 course is $10.00 but maybe I could get a reduced rate depending on interest. We will meet from 4:00 PM until we complete worship & communion hopefully by 8:00 PM for those that travel to Farmington. Let's all invite one or more Emmaus members & their families to come & join us for this outing. If you wish to contact me please use the email address info@fourcornersemmaus.com with the subject line Charley Tyler. De Colores, Charley Tyler PRAY FOR OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY For community Boards of Directors around the world, for the ongoing roll-out of the new Community Support Structure in the US, and for all upcoming Emmaus Ministries events 3

2nd Quarter 2018 Treasurer s Report As of June 30, 2018, the Four Corners Emmaus account balance was $14,514.27, very close to the balance a year ago. The funds consist of walk fees and donations from 2018 and previous years. The main expenditures this quarter were for insurance, 2018 walk materials, and supplies and postage. We are grateful for the much needed rainfall, which reminds us of how God meets our every need in His perfect timing. Let us continue to look for ways to show His love to those around us. Through our witnessing and the walks, others, as well as ourselves, can come to know God in a deeper way. Respectfully submitted, R. Noyes, Jr., Treasurer, Four Corners Emmaus Community AGAPE THE LOVE OF GOD We make a living by what we get. We make a LIFE by what we give. Emmaus Women s Walk #32 is scheduled for September 27 30, 2018. I prayerfully ask that each one of you think back to your Emmaus Walk and try to remember the several acts of love you received. Remember all the wonderful surprise gifts you found on beds, in the conference room, and? Those were Agape gifts and are the most visible way the Pilgrims can feel the unconditional love given to them during their Walk. Only you can make it happen for the new pilgrims! For agape ideas, go to the FCEC Website under Forms to find a list of 101 Agape Ideas. Please let me know if you or your Reunion group will be providing Agape for the Walk and the type (pillow, food, etc.). When making pillow agape we ask that you provide a minimum of 60 items. You may attach a label with a particular scripture or simple phrase associated with your gift. You may also want to add your Reunion Group name or Church name. These gifts are to actually represent God s love and therefore we should remain as anonymous servants. The label will help in returning any extra agape to your group after the Walk. By the way, SPONSORS are highly encouraged to provide agape items as well. You might want to find out what your pilgrim s favorite beverage or snack food is and provide that as part of the food agape for the group. If you need to have your items picked up, please contact me at info@fourcornersemmaus.com so that arrangements can be made or call me directly. You can also use that same email address to be part of the Agape Team. We need your hearts, your hands, and your creative ideas. By working together we can spread the joy and make a loving difference in our community. Remember that the Emmaus Walk is ultimately about YOUR FOURTH DAY! May God Bless You for being the hands and feet of Christ in providing expressions of Agape Love to the Pilgrims on this magnificent journey. Your Sister in Christ, Kathy LaMotte De Colores 4

72 HOUR PRAYER VIGIL Things to pray for on 72-hour Prayer Vigil during an Emmaus Weekend. Emmaus and Chrysalis community members often state they have trouble identifying specific things to pray for, especially if they have committed to a full hour of prayer. Just move down this list in your prayers, or start at any point and let the Spirit lead you from that point forward (Romans 8:26, 27). Regardless of how you go about it, just do it. Pilgrims and the team members are counting on you. More importantly, Christ is counting on you! Pray: => for each pilgrim by name, and ask God to help them forget the outside world for the weekend => that God will be with each pilgrim who may be resisting the Spirit s call => that each pilgrim will enter into table discussions and freely give of her/himself when it comes to responding to questions, etc. => for peace of mind for each pilgrim so that s/he will hear the messages shared by each speaker => that each pilgrim will faithfully die out to some obstacle in their life during Dying Moments Communion, and really examine their life during other chapel services => each pilgrim by name that, if s/he doesn t know the Lord Jesus as personal Savior, s/he will ask Him into his or her heart => that each pilgrim will feel the love of Christ in a very special way that s/he has never felt before and that s/he will accept it, then take this love back home to be shared with others => that each letter and each piece of agape will warm the heart of each pilgrim => that the letters of agape received from other communities will show them how far and wide God s love reaches => that the Holy Spirit will work in each pilgrim s life at the Closing service and into all of their Fourth days => for each pilgrim that, when s/he returns home at the end of the Walk, s/he will be able to go back to work without too much difficulty making up the work they may have missed on days of the Walk => that each pilgrim will walk closely with Lord Jesus and keep His name on their lips, and His Spirit in their hearts at all times => that when appropriate each pilgrim will thank their sponsor sincerely for their support of the Walk => for each team member by name, and ask God to help them forget the outside world for the weekend and to concentrate their total effort on serving Lord Jesus through their interactions with the pilgrims => that all family members of each pilgrim and team member who was left at home during the weekend will be protected from harm and be maintained in good health => that God will grant good health and restful sleep to each pilgrim and team member throughout the weekend 8

72 HOUR PRAYER VIGIL (continued) => for each pilgrim and team member that they will be able to Let go and let God in all they think or do this weekend => that gifts of agape to pilgrims and team members will be accepted with love for the donor(s), knowing they were Christ-inspired => for the Spiritual Directors that Lord Jesus will continue to bless them, and that through them, the Lord s Gospel will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for the Lay Director that Lord Jesus will continue to bless them, and that through them the Lord s Gospel will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for the Lay Director-in-Training that Lord Jesus will continue to bless them, and that through them, the Lord s Gospel in this Walk and the next one will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for the Music Directors that the Lord Jesus will continue to bless them, and that through them and their gift of music the Lord s Gospel will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for the Asst. Lay Directors that Lord Jesus will continue to bless them and that through them, the Lord s Gospel will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for the Table Leaders that Lord Jesus will continue to bless them, and that through them, the Lord s Gospel will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for the Asst. Table Leaders that Lord Jesus will continue to bless them, and that through them, the Lord s Gospel will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for the Board Representative that Lord Jesus will continue to bless them, and that through them, the Lord s Gospel will be clarified and His name will be glorified => for each Speaker that the Lord will speak to pilgrims through them and that each talk will be a blessing to all those who hear it => for those who are preparing the food and helping serve it to each pilgrim and team member, asking God to bless them, and to use the food to nourish each person in the manner God intends => for each Sponsor who loved the pilgrim so much that s/he made the Walk possible for the pilgrim => that there will be no problems encountered in matters that compromise the safety or comfort of the pilgrims and team members, such as fire, break-ins, theft, etc. => that Lord Jesus will reap a harvest of souls due to the efforts of these new Fourth Day members as they establish their own ministries => that our Lord will be blessed by all that is done in His name throughout the weekend => that all which is done over the weekend will be done in our Lord s name Amen => that the Lord will remind me to continue praying faithfully throughout the weekend that His will shall be done 9

LIFE IN MY WORLD Near Giddings, Texas, in the dark of a March night, I stepped in a puddle of water a few inches deep and jumped to get out of it and went under water in a lake! I came up without my glasses! Ten days before this our car transmission went out in Kansas City, Kansas, and our car was still in the fix it shop there. In John 16:33 Jesus said, In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. I felt like I was really having trouble. What does trouble look like for you? Think about it this way. We are the salt of the earth. Does salt do any flavoring sitting in the salt shaker? Salt must be scattered to do its work. Scatter it in your soup, on your eggs, on ice, in water then it flavors or does whatever it is made for. Life can be very hot or very cold for salt, but it still does its job. Can you take the flavor of salt out of food? Try it. Soak your food a few times and pour off the water each time. Then what do you have? Our lives flavor wherever we go, whatever is happening to us and whatever we do. Is it a good flavor? Do you keep doing your job when life gets hot or cold? I really struggled with my attitude when I so foolishly lost my glasses the night before we needed to drive 900 miles the next two days. I felt very impatient with my impatience that got me into that trouble. My wife had to drive for me most of one day (not to her liking). I became aware of what it is like for people who need glasses and can t get them. I could not see well enough to drive safely. I relearned dependence of my wife and on God. I now really appreciate my glasses like never before this. I have worn glasses every day since I was in second grade. This was the first night and day without glasses in 50+ years. God s grace has been with me through those 12 days and since. We are so blessed to be able to get and have glasses in this United States of America. God never gives up on me. He never gives up on you! We can expect to be pruned. Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. (John 15:2) So, don t be surprised at the difficulties you may have. We all have them! Then there is grace for others and from others. Our tow truck drivers were wonderful. One was definitely a Christian. The car repairman was so friendly and courteous. He even offered to fix my car without receiving the new transmission that was shipped because of warranty on the one that went out. It had not arrived to his business yet when we picked up our car to get home for Easter. My eye doctor and a business in Norman, Oklahoma made possible getting new glasses by the end of our first day of travel home from Texas. These people did not have to do these things for me. But they had grace for me and helped me. I trust that the way I interacted with all of these people was graceful on my part! Watch for the grace of God, grace from others, and your opportunities to have grace for others. Every day you will see each of these! May God s grace and peace be with you. Ben Stoner, Community Spiritual Director 10

QUARTERLY BOARD REPORT (April June 2018) At the April, 2018 Board meeting, we were blessed to have an educational visit from Phaedra Raymond, Representative for Emmaus Upper Room from Helena, MT and Greg Engroff, International Lay Director for Emmaus Upper Room, Nashville, TN. It was a wonderful opportunity for open discussion and sharing of information. The Board discussed creative opportunities for relaying the purpose of the Emmaus Organization, which is to strengthen leadership and involvement in the local churches, e.g. visitation with community ministers, local church education, and hosting of special events. Greg and Phaedra were able to give us ideas from other Emmaus Communities and a feeling that our challenges were not unique to our Community. Each area has its own distinctive situations, but our strength is in our unity through the Emmaus Walk Experience. Knowing that the 72 Hour Walk experience format is the same across the World, heightens our sense of unity in doing God s will. The Board spent a great deal of time discussing the Three Major Components of the Emmaus Experience: Pre-Emmaus (Sponsorship / Training) Walk Post Emmaus 4 th Day (Gatherings / Reunion Groups) Each component encompassing the next like a circle. Through openness, transparency and welcoming hearts we unlock greater possibilities. The KEY being Nurturing. We are all one in Christ we can draw strength from the bond of fellowship in the Emmaus Community experience as we go forward in serving our Lord and Savior in our individual churches and communities. It was humbling, challenging, and most importantly renewing. I personally felt encouraged to know that we are not alone in our challenges; we know that God is always with us, but it was also good to know that we have Brothers and Sisters in Christ that we can turn to for open discussion and new ideas. The Board was highly encouraged to know about the future implementation of an Emmaus Upper Room Community Data Base / Website, which can be used by various Local Emmaus Communities. Development and testing are currently under way. It is anticipated that the Go-Live date will be sometime in October, 2018. The purpose is to enhance communication and to provide greater ease of involvement for members of the Emmaus Community. The Board has also been working on electronic payment options for those attending Emmaus Walks, so we were excited to hear that those options are also being built into the system. A major challenge these last few months has been to identify alternative locations for future Emmaus Walks. The Board had run into numerous concerns about the viability of Hesperus Camp. Because of those concerns, various alternatives were considered, including a site visit made in May, 2018 to Snow Wolf Lodge outside of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Yes, whenever there is a need for relocation, there will always be challenges, but not without a sense of God s encouragement and direction. We must trust and have faith that God will lead us to do HIS will. As it turned out God provided us with a viable option for 2019 Emmaus Walks. You will be hearing more about that in the next few months. In Isaiah 43:2 it says When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. May we never forget that - GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME!
