POYA DAY CELEBRATIONS Best Time: Full moon evenings, once a month Poya is a religious celebration in the Buddhist calendar. You are invited to join us in the celebrations at Veheragalla Temple. Join the monk in meditation as our Recreational Team Member translates the sermon. Ulagalla offers access to some of Sri Lanka s most stunning historical sites and wildlife parks. Cycle around the ancient city of Anuradhapura and visit an old monastery on Ritigala Mountain or observe majestic Elephants and the enigmatic Leopards in the jungles of the central province. Alternatively, at home in Ulagalla, we have equally memorable and enjoyable activities complementing the environment and community we live in.
JUNGLE KAYAKING Best Times: 6 am or 4 pm Kayak quietly in Wannamaduwa Tank and observe wildlife and birdlife in their natural habitat paddling through lotus flowers, water lilies and jungle trees. ORGANIC GARDEN TOUR AND SRI LANKAN COOKING CLASS Best Times: 9.30 am till lunchtime Take a tour around our organic garden accompanied by our Chef and handpick vegetables and herbs for your one-of-a-kind Sri Lankan cooking class. Take home our recipes to recreate them in your kitchen. NATURE WALK Best Times: 6 am Wake up to the sound of birds chirping, it is time to discover your new home! A leisurely 1.5 hour walk through Ulagalla s estate and out onto the bunds of Ulagalla Lake and Wannamaduwa Tank to spot 100 different varieties of endemic birds living in and around Ulagalla and greet village fishermen and bathers as you go.

ARCHERY Best Times: Sundown Find your inner Robin Hood and take up our challenge Compete with our Recreational Team Member in an archery shoot out! HORSE RIDING Best Time - Outside of the midday sun! Our two horses are always up for a half an hour or one hour walk round the estate and along the tank. KITE MAKING Best Times: 3 pm This 2 hour activity is for the young and young at heart. Our Recreational Team Member will lay out all the necessary tools you will need to make a traditional Sri Lankan kite.
Wilpattu National Park The Wilpattu National Park is the largest and oldest national park in Sri Lanka. Home to endangered animals such as the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear and Elephant, it is also home to one of the seven sub species of the largest concentration of Leopards in the world. WILDLIFE AND NATURE EXPERIENCES Minneriya National Park The Gathering is one of Sri Lanka s most spectacular wildlife events of the year. It is the largest seasonally recurring concentration of wild elephants found in the world. The herds congregate around the Minneriya reservoir, it is not uncommon to see herds of up to 400 simply gather, to socialise, bathe, feed and mate. A unique phenomenon only seen in Minneriya National Park, The Gathering is listed as #6 in the Lonely Planet s Guide to Natural Wildlife Spectacles of the World.
ANURADHAPURA BICYCLE TOUR Anuradhapura is the largest and oldest of Sri Lanka's ancient cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first capital of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura held the royal seat of more than 250 Buddhist and Hindu kings recorded in the royal genealogies and was the preeminent city on the island for some 2000 years. As you cycle through, imagine a city 2000 years ago, with its palaces, administrative buildings standing nine storeys high and huge dagobas. WHALE WATCHING Best Times: May to August - Jungle Beach, Kuchchaveli Blue Whales - the largest mammals ever known are residents off the shores of our resort. Sperm Whales - the largest predators on our planet and also the deepest diving whales travel in pods following a matriarchal system similar to elephants. Off the coast of Sri Lanka, we often encounter super pods containing 40 or more. PRISTINE DIVE SITES Best Times: May to August - Uga Bay, Pasikudah It was at the dawn of April 9, 1942 when Japanese reconnaissance planes found their quarry. Below them, the British aircraft carrier H.M.S. Hermes and her Australian escort H.M.A.S. Vampire were cutting south through the crystal waters along Sri Lanka's east coast. 70 Japanese dive-bombers attacked the Hermes and within 10 minutes the ship had taken 40 hits. It capsized and disappeared beneath the waves with 307 of its crew. The Vampire was sunk by a direct hit, splitting the destroyer in two. Sixty years later, the Hermes is just one of the wrecks that form a divers' paradise around Batticaloa, 32 kilometers south of Pasikudah (the wreckage of the Vampire is yet to be found).
