Hard Sayings Luke 12:1-12

Hard Sayings What you have whispered in private will be shouted from the rooftop. Don t fear those who can kill the body, but the one who can send you to hell. If you deny Jesus, he will deny you before the angels of God. If you blaspheme the Holy Spirit, you will not be forgiven.

Luke 11:53-54 The scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say. (ESV)

Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees Luke 12:1-3

Luke 12:1-3 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. (ESV)

Hypocrisy (hypokrisis) False pretense, an outward show, two-faced, pretender (play-actor)

Matthew 23:27-28, 33 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? (ESV)

Matthew 6:5 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. (ESV)

Mark 7:6-7 Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me. (ESV)

Private Room (tameion) What you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. (12:3) The innermost room, store room, hidden.

The Point The point is not simply to scare you, but to remind you that there is no use pretending God already knows. Be real. Don t be like the Pharisees.

Fear Him Who Has the Authority to Cast into Hell Luke 12:4-7

Luke 12:4-7 I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:16-17, 22 Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues and you will be hated by all for my name s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. (ESV)

The Point The point is not simply to scare you, but to remind you that God can be trusted he knows what you are going through.

An Illustration Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. (12:6)

Penny (assarion) The lowest valued Roman coin.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit Will Not Be Forgiven Luke 12:8-10

Luke 12:8-10 And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. (ESV)

Blasphemy of the HS The deliberate, constant, repeated, & unrepented rejection of the H.S.

Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. (ESV)

Point The point is not simply to scare you, but to provide hope. Even those who are currently speaking against him can be forgiven, as long as their resistance does not continue.

Don t Be Anxious about Defending Yourselves Luke 12:11-12

Luke 12:11-12 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say. (ESV)

Remember the Context The promise concerned times when the disciples were brought to court into the synagogues and before rulers and authorities.

Remember the Context The promise concerned times when the disciples were brought to court into the synagogues and before rulers and authorities. The promise was not a compensation for a lack of preparation. The disciples had three years of teaching and practical application. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (2 Tim 2:15, ESV)

Remember the Context The promise concerned times when the disciples were brought to court into the synagogues and before rulers and authorities. The promise was not a compensation for the disciples lack of preparation. The disciples had three years of teaching and practical application. The context (12:8-10) is clearly in regards to acknowledging Jesus Christ before men.

1 Peter 3:13-15 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. (ESV)

Acts 4:1, 3, 7-9 As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them and they arrested them and put them in custody And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled

Acts 4:9-12 man let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (ESV)

Point The point is not simply to scare you, but to give you comfort. The Holy Spirit will give you the strength to acknowledge your faith in Jesus Christ when it is required of you.

Application Don t Pretend God already knows who you are and still loves you. Don t Be Worried God cares for you and has provided for your eternal destiny. Don t Be Discouraged Those who reject him now, still have the opportunity to repent. Don t Be Anxious The Holy Spirit will help give you the strength to stand up for him in times of trial.

Hard Sayings We can take comfort in the fact that God loves us, has provided for us, and will give us the strength to faithfully follow.
