THE DISCIPLINES OF LIFE SERIES DEVELOPING A LIFESTYLE THAT S USABLE TO GOD TAPE NUMBER WNX-525 JANUARY 5, 2010 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: The Discipline of Disdain A Practical Series On Christian Disciplines And How We Should Be Living In The World Around Us Week 23 of a 31 Week Series SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Christianity 101, Faith, Discernment, Discipleship Introduction to the Text; Matthew 13:55 The Theme and Textual Summation of the Passage Have you ever been mocked or made fun-of for being or doing the Christ-like thing? or maybe you ve suffered even physically mistreated for being a Christian? That action against you is called Disdain and it s no stranger to the children of God. THE DISCIPLINES OF LIFE SERIES AND DEVELOPING A SPIRITUAL LIFESTYLE THAT S USABLE TO GOD Matt. 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. :19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, :20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. 1

Matt. 13:53-57 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there. :54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? :55 Is this not the carpenter s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? :56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things? :57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house. You would think that the world would throw out its arms to welcome us who represent the King of Kings, The Healer and Savoir of the world but no. Honestly You Guys I m increasingly amazed, that a man or woman would willfully reject Jesus Christ, the Bible and His Gospel part of getting older is a really cool settling in that faith has on you. the things of God become more sure, more certain as time passes! Every True Follower of Jesus Christ Knows What it's like to be Disdained by others who have no spirit for God or His word or His people. that is, this life The American Dictionary Defines Disdain as (1) The looking upon or treating another with contempt, disgust or scorn. (2) to think of someone unworthy of notice, response, or consideration. (3) a feeling of contempt for anything valued as worthless or unworthy. There s something within us that s a very dangerous weakness and that weakness is the human desire to be liked and accepted among our peer s Luke 6:26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets. Prov. 29:25 The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe. 2

Media Que 1.) Identifying disdain John 15:18-20 If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. :19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. :20 Remember the word that I said to you, A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. Matt. 13:55 Is this not the carpenter s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? :56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? This Was His Experience & It Will Be Ours Too 1Cor. 4:11-13 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. :12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; :13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now. It comes from those who are not walking with God. Psa. 2:1-3 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? :2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, :3 Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us. Q - How Could Jesus Christ Suffer Under Disdain? A - He considered the source of the attack. 3

Matt. 27:39-42 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads :40 and saying, You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross. :41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, :42 He saved others; Himself He cannot save. So How Do We Identify Disdain? By Walking in the Spirit Gal. 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. But what does that mean; to Walk in the Spirit? (to do, decide, act, think in agreement with His will the word) Media Que 2.) Handling disdain rejection, mockery, disdain most often happens to us when our relationship with Jesus is growing and advancing the most. - it causes a quick and sharp sting to the core of who we are. IS to not fight back. It's not defending yourself, it's not avenging. David Nearly Fell Victim to Disdain 1Sam. 25:10 Then Nabal answered David s servants, and said, Who is David, and who is the son of Jesse? 4

David Reacted in Self Defense, Sound Good. But Abigail Interceded for David she won out Prov. 26:4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him. Prov. 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. Is. 40:31 But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. James 1:19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; Media Que 3.) Surviving disdain Let Me First Tell You How Not to Survive Disdain Matt. 26:33-35,73-75 Peter answered and said to Him, Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble. :34 Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. :35 Peter said to Him, Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You! :73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you. :74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, I do not know the Man! Immediately a rooster crowed. :75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. So he went out and wept bitterly. 5

Our Role Model at Survival Training Is none other than Jesus Christ Himself. Matt. 27:27-30 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. :28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. :29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! :30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. Matt. 26:67-68 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, :68 saying, Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You? John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. Are We Willing to Submit to Mistreatment for Jesus Sake? (in my flesh I can't do it I have been trained in my flesh to fight back and to kill if I need to) persecution vs. acts of violence are two very different things Media Que 4.) Overcoming disdain the bible says allot about the believer's relationship to Jesus. We, the church, Christians are the Bride of Christ We are the Sheep of the Shepherd. We are the Beloved of God. Overcoming Disdain is Guaranteed to Us. 6

When the Lord calls us into His ministry, there are no losses. There will be defeats and setbacks, we will lose some battles but the war and the victory has already been decided in our favor. 1Sam. 17:40-43 Then the young David took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. :41 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. :42 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; because he was only a youth, ruddy (red) and handsome. :43 So the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David Psa. 62:2 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. it causes a quick and sharp sting to our temper. Matt. 5:9-12 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. :10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. :11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. :12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Media Que 5.) Enduring disdain 7

5.) Enduring disdain 1Tim. 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2Tim. 3:1-3 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: :2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, :3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, They Will Fight Against Us With Everything They Can Get Their Hands On And The Is Coming. Matt. 24:13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. Matt. 24:11-12 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. :12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. Phil. 2:7 but He made Himself of no reputation, Heb. 11:33-40 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, :34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. :35 Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. :36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. :37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented - - :38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth 8

:39 And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, :40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us. Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. So How Do We Endure Disdain? Psa. 73:28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. - draw near to God 1Pet. 5:8-9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. :9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, - Resist Satan at every turn Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. - receive the Holy Spirit s power You ve Tried so Hard to Live the Christian Life But For far too many times there has been defeat after defeat. Tonight, You Need The Power of the Holy Spirit In your life. We re going to take a little break now We ll see you back in here in about 15-20 minutes. - end 9
