Is Your Faith A Matter of Convenience or Conviction? Introduction: A. The subject matter today - is indeed a puzzle to myself. Though out the ages and in all lands this is a common problem faced in the Lord s Kingdom B. For some 2000 years this plaque is still present even today - and even amongst our own number. I do not have all the answers on how to remedy this problem - but my mothers teaching If you get their hearts right - the actions will follow is one that I have used for years. 1. It is easy to become discouraged as a gospel preacher (and even as a member), when you see, plead with and in cases beg Christians to be committed and loyal to the Lord, His Kingdom and His work. 2. As a young gospel preacher I would often be disgusted and in some cases lose faith - what s the use? ---- if it is ok for some to act this way why not all - but then I came to understand that the Lord does not require me to make Christians in baptism - it is His Work and certainly does not require at my hands the accountability of baptized believers individual behavior. 3. Instead the scripture 2 Corinthians 13:5 - Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? unless indeed you are disqualified. a. Identifies that it is up to each individual to examine themselves - and I ask you to consider this very seriously not only today but everyday. C. The question we want to examine this morning is whether your faith is a matter of convenience or a matter of conviction. 1. It takes conviction to seek out truth! 2. It takes conviction to do what is right! 3. It takes conviction to stand for what is right! 4. It takes conviction to stand against what is wrong! D. We can see the difference between convenience and conviction in the teaching of Christ with regards to the hirelings in - John 10:11-14 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. Body: II. Let us note some Biblical examples of Both demeanor s in both the Old and New Testaments: A. Joseph Gen. 39:7-12 - - And it came to pass after these things that his master s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, Lie with me. 8 But he refused and said to his master s wife, Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? 10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,12 that she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me. But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. B. Moses Heb. 11:24-28 -- By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh s daughter,25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; Page 1 of 5

for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. C. Joshua & Caleb Num. 13:30; 14:6-9 1. Numbers 13:30 - Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it. 2. Numbers 14:6-9 - But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes;7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land.8 If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them. 3. Conviction or Convenience? D. Nadab & Abihu Lev. 10:1,2 - Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them.2 So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. E. Jeroboam 1 Kings 12:25-30 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim, and dwelt there. Also he went out from there and built Penuel.26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now the kingdom may return to the house of David:27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn back to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and go back to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28 Therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of gold, and said to the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt! 29 And he set up one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.30 Now this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan. F. Peter Matt. 26:69-75 Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, You also were with Jesus of Galilee. 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, I do not know what you are saying. 71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth. 72 But again he denied with an oath, I do not know the Man! 73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you. 74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, I do not know the Man! Immediately a rooster crowed.75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. So he went out and wept bitterly. G. Felix Acts 24:25 - Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you. III. Let us note some MODERN conveniences in Religion today: A. Salvation by faith ONLY James 2:24 1. Don t have to do anything to be saved other than just believe - how hard is that? 2. James 2:24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Page 2 of 5

IV. B. Once Saved Always Saved 2 Peter 1:5-10 1. How easy is this - once God has saved you nothing you do will ever alter that state! 2. 2 Peter 1:5-10 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; C. Not willing to search for truth Acts 17:11-12 1. My preacher says... It is good for mom and dad it certainly is good for me! 2. Acts 17:11-12 - These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. D. Standards for choosing a church 1 Tim. 3:15 1. Worship at the church of your choice is the plea of men 2. 1 Timothy 3:15 - but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. a. There is something about finding a church that stands on the truth and nothing more than the truth. b. Many want to know what they can get out of the church - ie. The social gospel rather than the faith that can be built up in them. E. A focus on recreation & entertainment rather than doctrine & holiness Romans 14:17; 1 Peter 1:13ff 1. Romans 14:17 - for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. nd rd F. 2 or 3 Generation Christianity Jude 2:7-10; Romans 10:17 1. It is so much easier to go to the church of our parents and take the beliefs of our parents than to study for ourselves. 2. Jude 7-10 - as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.8 Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.9 Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke you! 10 But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. Let us learn to make the necessary APPLICATION: A. It Is More Convenient To: 1. Be conformed than transformed Rom. 12:1,2 a. Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. 2. Stay at home than to assemble with the saints Heb. 10:24,25; Rom. 12:10 Page 3 of 5

a. Romans 12:10 - Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 3. Watch TV than to read & study God s word 1 Peter 2:1; Heb 5:12,13; Psalm 119:97-104 a. Psalm 119:97-104 - Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. 102 I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. 4. Neglect prayer 1 Thess. 5:17; Rom. 12:12; Eph. 6:18 a. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 - pray without ceasing, b. Romans 12:12 - rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 5. Spend than to give to the Lord s work 1 Cor. 16:1,2; Hag. 1:4,9 a. Haggai 1:4,9 - Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins? b. Vrs 9 You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the LORD of hosts. Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. 6. Be lazy than to be zealous in serving the Lord Phil. 2:12; Tit. 2:14; James 1:27; 2:16; 1 John 3:17 a. 1 John 3:17 - But whoever has this world s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? b. Philippians 2:12 - Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 7. To quit than overcome sin conflicts - problems 1 John 5:4; Matt. 18:15; 2 Cor. 4:7-18 a. 1 John 5:4 - For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. b. Matthew 18:15 - Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. c. 2 Corinthians 4:7-18 - But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.8 We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.12 So then death is working in us, but life in you.13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, I believed and therefore I spoke, we also believe and therefore speak,14 knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you.15 For all Page 4 of 5

things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. 8. To procrastinate than to do that which we know we should do today Acts 24:25; Isa. 55:6; Hag. 1:2; 2 Cor. 6:2; Heb. 3:13; James 4:13-14 a. Isaiah 55:6 - Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. b. Haggai 1:2 - Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying: This people says, The time has not come, the time that the LORD s house should be built. c. Hebrews 3:13 - but exhort one another daily, while it is called Today, lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. d. The song we sing - work for the night is coming when man works no more. B. It takes a matter of Conviction to be a Christian and not a matter of convenience. V. In Conclusion: A. The convenient path has always been the most popular path However the convenient path is rarely the path to success!! - Matthew 7:13,14 1. Matthew 7:13-14 - Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. 2. Our faith and actions must be based on what is true, right, good and holy, rather than what is easy!!! Matthew 16:24; Rom 12:1,2 3. Commitment to the Lord, to His church, and to this local work requires CONVICTION not convenience!! B. Becoming a Christian requires conviction!!! 1. Turning away from sin 2. Confessing Christ 3. Being baptized - C. Living as a Christian requires conviction!!... 1. Serving in His kingdom 2. Living holy lives D. So the question is, is your faith a matter of Convenience or one of Conviction? 1. Acts 24:25 - Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.
