Good Friday Service of Tenebrae March 25, 2016 Could you imagine, Pilate, that long after you were gone - even twenty centuries - your hand-washing would go on? -Lodene Hathaway Cobleskill, NY

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE OF TENEBRAE Welcome to the Service of Tenebrae, an ancient Holy Week devotion. Tenebrae means darkness or shadows. Through word, song, and symbol, we recall the closing hours of the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. We begin with a fully lighted worship center. With a series of lessons, prayers, and sung responses, we are reminded that we have been accomplices in the suffering and death of Jesus. We are also recipients of the grace, mercy and unconditional love of the God who sends all of us into this world. With each word from the cross, the lights are dimmed, until all have been extinguished, save one. This reminds us of the flight of the disciples and the resentment of the world that leads to the final isolation of Jesus on the cross. The lone Paschal (lamb) Candle representing Christ, the Light of the World, is at last re-moved. Christ s death was real. After a loud noise is heard, the candle returns to our presence. It reminds us that death and the grave have been conquered. We live in the light of Resurrection Hope, which we celebrate Easter Day! Worshipers are asked to leave the church in silence. The offering plates are near the exit doors where you may place your gifts as you depart. Parents, the loud sound at the conclusion of our worship (the rending of the tomb) may be startling to young children. 2

SILENT PROCESSIONAL WELCOME AND HOMILY PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Please sit or kneel as you are able, and read in unison) C. Father of mercy, we admit that we have betrayed You in our words and deeds. Like the disciples, we have sat at the table with You; yet even as we ate the bread, we have thought about our position and status. We have forgotten that true greatness lies in humble service. We have found many excuses to justify our selfishness. We have been too wrapped up in our own concerns that we could not listen to the anxious cares of others. We have been quick to condemn because we did not want to take the time to understand. Forgive us, Lord, for being double-minded and selfserving. Forgive us through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (Please stand as you are able) ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS P. Though we have failed Him, God still loves us. C. Though we have betrayed Him, Christ prays for us. P. Though we are weak in faith, God is merciful. C. Tell the Good News! P. Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! C. Thanks be to God, for His mercy endures forever! 3

FIRST WORD: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. The Old Testament Prophecy: Isaiah 53:1-3 1 Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account. The Word from the Cross: Luke 23:32-38 32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. [[ 34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."]] And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" 38 There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." C. For secret resentments; for preferring self-interest above the interest of others; for all unloving, shallow, and malicious judgments - Father, forgive us: teach us to know what we do. In Jesus name, Amen. 5

6

SECOND WORD: Today you will be with me in Paradise The Old Testament Prophecy: Isaiah 53:10-12 10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the LORD shall prosper. 11 Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.\ The Word from the Cross: Luke 23:39-43 39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong." 42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." 43 He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise." C. Lord, keep us mindful of your generosity. Help us to share our gifts with the lonely and the hungry, so that it may never be directly through our neglect that anyone, within our power to help, becomes criminal, or that any one of them dies, in body or in spirit, cursing you because we did not care enough. In Jesus name, Amen. 7

Choir Anthem 8

THIRD WORD: Woman, here is your son! Here is your mother. The Old Testament Prophecy: Psalm 22:9-11, 16-18 9 Yet you are the one who drew me forth from the womb, and kept me safe on my mother's breast. 10 I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born; you were my God when I was still in my mother's womb. 11 Be not far from me, for trou- ble is near, and there is no one to help. 16 Packs of dogs close me in, a band of evildoers circles round me; they pierce my hands and my feet. R 17 I can count all my bones while they stare at me and gloat. 18 They divide my gar- ments among them; for my clothing, they cast lots. The Word from the Cross: John 19:23-27 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it." This was to fulfill what the scripture says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots." 25 And that is what the soldiers did. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son." 27 Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. C. We pray, O God, for unity among parents and children, people and nations. God of all, let the whole earth worship you. Let all kingdoms obey you, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen. 9

10

FOURTH WORD: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?. The Old Testament Prophecy: Psalm 22:1-8 1 My God, my God, why have you for- saken me? Why so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? 2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer; by night, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are the Holy One, enthroned on the prais- es of Israel. 4 Our ancestors put their trust in you, they trusted, and you rescued them. 5 They cried out to you and were delivered; they trusted in you and were not put to shame. 6 But as for me, I am a worm and not human, scorned by all and despised by the people. 7 All who see me laugh me to scorn; they curl their lips; they shake their heads. 8 "Trust in the LORD; let the LORD deliver; let God rescue him if God so de- lights in him." The Word from the Cross: Mark 15:33-34 33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 At three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" C. O Lord, God of mercies, Spirit of comfort, make us your ministers of hope to our fellow human beings. Give us courage to uphold them when they are distressed. Help us to assure them that where you are, there is no darkness at all. Through Jesus Christ. Amen. 11

12

FIFTH WORD: I am thirsty. The Old Testament Prophecy: Psalm 22:14-15 14 I am poured out like water; all my bones are out of joint; my heart within my breast is melting wax. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; and you have laid me in the dust of death. The Word from the Cross: John 19:28-29 28 After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), "I am thirsty." 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. C. Almighty God, we thank you that in Jesus Christ you understand our physical needs and that we can pray in confidence for the water to quench the thirst of our bodies, and the living water to fill our souls. In our Lord s name, Amen. 13

14

SIXTH WORD: It is finished. The Old Testament Prophecy: Isaiah 53:4-5 4 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. The Word from the Cross: John 19:30 30 When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. C. We so often give up halfway, Lord, because we have not taken time to examine in your presence what we are trying to do, and to ask you whether it is in accordance with your will for us. Help us with your grace, that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name as your Son did in his life and death. Through Him we pray, Amen. 15

16

SEVENTH WORD: Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. The Old Testament Prophecy: Isaiah 53:8-9 8 By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. 9 They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. The Word from the Cross: Luke 23:44-49 44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." Having said this, he breathed his last. 47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "Certainly this man was innocent." 48 And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. 49 But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. 17

18

(Period of Silence for Reflection) REMOVAL OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE: P. It is finished. Bell tolls 33 times, marking each year of Christ s life. A loud noise signifies the rending of the tomb. RETURN OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE: The Light of Hope: John 3:16-17 P. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. APOSTLE S CREED (in unison...please stand at the words:...on the third day he rose again. ) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell, On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. BENEDICTION: P. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord look upon you with favor and give you everlasting peace. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. P. Let us go in peace. Silent Recessional 19
