September 15-21, 2012 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 2 cars, bus involved in minor accident Amurtha s vocal concert today at 6.30 p.m TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 29 Dhandapani Desikar had a tough time during the recording of his songs for the Gemini Nandanar. Vasan made him sing many songs repeatedly in the recording theater before he felt satisfied and okayed them, much to the discomfort, disgust, dejection and even anger of the famed singer! Indeed Desikar stopped talking to Vasan for a long time thereafter! Desikar s most admirable asset was his excellent and melodious voice. According to Mr. Fielden, the first Director-General of All India Radio, Desikar s voice was the only one among the Classical Carnatic musicians of that day acceptable, according to the voice culture standards of Classical Western Music. He described the others as mere crooners!. Vasan created sensation when he announced a Ten Thousand Rupees - Song Contest for Nandanar. It was the first time such contest was launched in Indian Film History! Many could not believe it. Ten thousand rupees was a mega buck fortune in 1943! The rules were simple. One had to get a coupon given along with a ticket at any cinema where the movie was being screened. The coupon-holder had to select The Three Best Songs in the movie and enter them in the coupon in the order of his preference. The coupon then had to be deposited in a box kept at the movie theater. That was all! If more than one correct solution was submitted, the prize money would be divided among the winners. Vasan had deposited the list containing the correct solution in a sealed envelope with the Indian Bank, First Line Beach, Madras, on the day before Nandanar was released. The contest generated enormous public interest and enthusiasm. In addition, it sold tickets contributing to the box-office success of Nandanar! Nandanar was a major success of 1943 when Madras was caught in the web of the Japanese bomb scare during the Second World War (1939-1945). Indeed the city was evacuated for a short time in 1942, which came to be known as the Evacuation Period. Real estate values crashed and many houses sported TO LET boards with no takers. Indeed a weekly came up with a famous cartoon depicting two villagers walking around the city and noticing the boards. One says. I wonder who this Mr. Tolet Dorai is, owning so many houses in the city! Must be a rich Dorai! Ra. Krishnamurti (Kalki), who by now had promoted his own successful weekly Kalki after splitting with Vasan, reviewed the film. He took exception to a comedy scene which he called as vulgar and even obscene. In that scene a rat enters a man s dhoti and he jumps around while the rat is active inside his nether garment! Fortunately, VHS prints of Nandanar are available in the video market. Some twenty years ago, a LP-Record of the film songs was released but sadly, no audio cassette tape was brought out. It s still not too late... The Origins of Playback Singing The voice-lending off-screen playback singing system is part and parcel of the Indian motion picture. Indeed such singers who sing behind the screen are themselves as much stars as their on-screen colleagues. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Shamshad Begum, Geetha (Roy) Dutt, Mohamed Rafi, Mukhesh, Kishore Kumar, S. P. Balasubramaniam, P. B. Sreenivos, A. M. Raja, T. M. Soundararajan, K. J. Jesudas, P. Susheela, Jikki (P.G. Krishnaveni), Chitra, S. Janaki, and many others enjoy as much fame and name as the stars and actors. Balu, as S. P. Balasubramaniam is affectionately known, is a household name not only in India but also abroad like America and wherever South Indians live. Indeed in New York there is a SPB Fans Association! Interestingly, there was a period when such playback singers were anonymous and received no credit either in the film or on the labels of gramophone records. Slowly the tide turned ( To be continued) Two cars and a private bus Sai bhajans on 3 days a week Sri Sathya Sai Samiti, T. Nagar conducts Sai bhajans every week in the following venues in T. Nagar: Sai Keshav Hall, 157, G. N. Chetty Road (near Panagal Park, Vijaya Bank building): Saturdays, 5 p.m. Ayurvedasramam, 155, G. N. Chetty Road (near Panagal Park), Mondays, 6 p.m. 50/38, Motilal Street (opposite Ranganathan Street), Wednesdays, 6 p.m. More details can be had from D. Srinivasa Rao (98400 50875) or C. Ramamurthy (94440 54819). Free Veda classes thrice a week Kurichi Lakshminarasimhachariar (resident of 8, 2 nd Main Road, CIT Nagar East, Nandanam) conducts free Veda and Suktham classes from 9 a.m to 10 a.m on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. phone 98406 40705. More than 1200 BSNL landline subscribers were affected when a cable got damaged during digging work carried out by Chennai Corporation workers on North Usman Road, near Unnamalai Am- Open manhole poses danger to motorists traveling one behind the other were involved in a minor accident on Muthuramalinganar Salai, near Amutham Supermarket, Nandanam at around 1 p.m on Sep 10. The driver of the car braked suddenly forcing the second car which was close behind it to hit its rear. Similarly the bus which was closely behind the second car also dashed against the rear of the second car. There was a minor damage to the bumper of the first car. No one was injured in the incident. Damaged BSNL cable affects 1200 landlines man Street, T Nagar on Sept. 12. BSNL staff were seen repairing the cable. A. SADANAND Jyotsna, the Naroda trial judge, has created judicial history by binning for life 32 for the post-godhra carnage, when she could have boosted the rope industry by going the barbarian noose happy way. I think Pratibha Patil s love of life that had earlier saved 34 on the death row has percolated into the minds of the trial courts and Jyotsna is the first of Pratibha s converts. Good. Foolish Kasab should have needled his amicus curiae lawyer to jump the queue to get his appeal posted and evaded the rope-trick before her retirement. When you want to take a chaps life trough the rigmarole of law, the State should not be guilty of going on a Rip Van Winkle snooze that kills the killer in slow motion. I hope that the new President who had come to the city last week to meet me and perhaps a few thousand lawyers to celebrate the 150- year existence of the Madras High court, will be recharged with love of life, kindness and recognition of ordinary human foibles and take an oath that his 5 years on the throne of Raisna Hill will not be marred by the spillage of human blood, even if the mercy petitioner be a combination of Ghengiz Khan, Attila the Hun, Hitler, Truman,Tojo et al.
