The Lions Den Bible Story Daniel 6 Teacher Challenge Brought to Babylon as a young captive, Daniel was in Babylon but was not of Babylon. He was a product of his relationship with the powerful and true God. Daniel recognized that when he obeyed God, God would display His power. When Daniel heard the king s decree, he did just as he had always done: He opened his windows and prayed to God. When God s angel shut the mouths of the lions, God s power was so obvious that the king decreed that all of Babylon should pray only to the God of Daniel! When was a time that you obeyed God and experienced God s faithfulness? What gives you confidence to obey? The bold and the fearless character Daniel displayed came only from his daily relationship with God. Such character can be ours as well! When we daily, faithfully talk to Him, we can be bold, remembering that it is God s strength that will carry us. Demonstrate to your little ones how easy it is to talk to God as you use short, simple prayers in class. Teacher s Planning 1. Choose which centers you will provide and the order in which children will participate in them. For tips on schedule planning, see page 9. 2. Plan who will lead each center, making sure to have one adult for approximately every six children. For staffing tips and ideas, see page 12. 2011 Gospel Light. Play to Learn Active Game Center: Prayer Times Bible, pictures of day- and nighttime scenes, large Post-it Notes, yarn; optional Day Pattern and Night Pattern from Discovering God s Love CD-ROM. Prepare Cover each picture with Post-it Notes and place on wall at children s eye level. (Optional: Print CD-ROM Patterns onto large sheets of paper and cover with Post-it Notes.) Make yarn line a few feet away. 1. Children line up behind yarn line. Children take turns running to picture and removing Post-it Notes, one note at a time. 2. As each portion of the picture is revealed, children guess what is shown in the picture. Repeat for each picture. Vary the manner in which children move to the picture (run, hop, skip, jump with feet together, walk backwards, tip-toe, etc.). Talk About The Bible says, I pray to you, O Lord. Lord is another name for God. God loves us! We can pray to God every day. We can tell God how much we love Him. Let s play a game to talk about some of the times we can pray to God. Rachel, is this a daytime or nighttime picture? We can talk to God in the morning or in the night. We can ask God to help us. Beth, what might you ask God in the morning? You can ask God to help you have fun at school. Cody, what might you say to God at night? You can thank Him for your family. We can pray to God at any time, day or night! For Younger Children Instead of using Post-it Notes, cover picture using four to six pieces of paper. For Older Children Before class, glue pictures to poster board. When dry, cut pictures into four or five puzzle pieces. In addition to identifying pictures by removing Post-it Notes from assembled puzzles, children put together puzzles. 402 2011 Gospel Light. Play to Learn Art Center: Mane Event Bible, paper plates, scissors, hole punch, yarn, measuring stick, markers (brown, yellow and orange), stapler. Prepare Cut plates in half. Following sketch a, cut a set of mane and ears for each child. Punch a hole at each end of the manes. Cut two 18-inch (45.5-cm) lengths of yarn for each child. 1. Using markers, each child colors a mane and two ears. Assist children in cutting slits in the edges of the manes (see sketch b). 2. Help children place ears on mane and staple in place. Children thread a length of yarn through each hole on their manes. Assist children in tying knots. Children place manes on their heads and tie under their chins (see sketch c). Talk About In our Bible story, Daniel prayed to God. God kept Daniel safe when he was in a cave filled with lions. Let s make lions manes to remind us of this story. The Bible says, I pray to you, O Lord. Lord is another name for God. We can pray to God at any time! We can ask God to help us. I ask God to help me be kind. Pray briefly, Thank You, God, that we can pray to You anytime. a. c. b. For Younger Children Before class, thread yarn through each hole in the mane and tie into a knot. Precut sections of mane and ears for children to color. Staple ears to manes. For Older Children Cut brown, yellow and orange construction paper into 1x4-inch (2.5x10-cm) strips. Children glue construction-paper strips to add to their manes. 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Discovering God s Love Leader s Guide 403

Play to Learn Block Center: Places of Prayer Bible, blocks, nature items (shells, twigs, pebbles, etc.). 1. Children build different places with blocks (school, store, park, church, home, etc.). 2. Children then decorate places with nature items. Talk About The Bible says, I pray to you, O Lord. Lord is another name for God. We pray to God because He loves and helps us. Let s build some of the places where we go and where we can pray to God. Isabella, what place are you building? I like to go to the park, too. We can pray to God whenever we go to the park! We can pray to God wherever we go! Justin, what place are you building? What are some things God can help you do at school? (Share toys with friends. Obey the teacher. Play kindly with others. Help others.) God helps us because He loves us. Praying to God is one way to show that we love Him. Pray briefly, Thank You, God, for helping us. We love You. For Younger Children Bring several magazine pictures of different buildings (schools, churches, homes, stores, etc.). Children build a block road wide enough to walk down. Place magazine pictures along the road. Walk down the road with children, talking about the different places as you walk past them. For Older Children Bring in several magazine pictures of bridges, roads, city scenes, etc. Children choose one of the pictures and build the item in the picture. 404 2011 Gospel Light. Play to Learn Science Center: Camouflage Animals Bible, variety of small plastic animals (including a lion if possible), construction paper in earth tones (brown, gray, white, green, tan). 1. Lay out sheets of construction paper on table or floor. 2. Children take turns to select an animal. Others guess on which color of paper the animal would most easily be hidden. 3. Child sets his or her animal on chosen color of paper to see if the animal would be well hidden there, moving animal to a different paper if desired. Talk About In our Bible story today, we ll hear about a man named Daniel. He spent the night with lions! God kept Daniel safe. Let s play a game with animals to remind us of this story. Where do each of these animals live? In a tan or brown desert? In a green forest? On a gray mountain? How does the animal s color help it to hide? The markings and colors of animals help them hide and stay safe. Where do you live? Where are some places you go? God loves us and helps us. We can pray to God and ask for His help. For Younger Children Children group animals according to color. For Older Children How many (green) animals can you name? Let s thank God for (green) animals. We ll say, Thank You, God and wait so you can say the name of the animal. On a large sheet of paper, children draw the animals and where they might live, and then dictate a prayer to add to the mural. 2011 Gospel Light. Listen to Learn Daniel 6 Bible, Bible Story 25 pictures from God s Story for Me Poster Pack #1, Preschool Music #1 CD and player, ball. Greet Each Other Lead children in saying the following rhyme: Let s play Copycat just for fun. Let s copy (Zack). He s the one. Whatever he does, we ll do the same. That s how we ll play the Copycat game. Zack does a motion (jumps with both feet, touches head, pats legs, turns around, looks up and then down, hops on one foot, etc.). Children copy him. Zack chooses and points to next child to be named in the activity. Repeat until all children have been named and have demonstrated a motion for group to copy. Tell the Story Open your Bible to Daniel 6. Tell the story using the pictured motions (keywords in bold) or show Bible Story 25 pictures. What is something you do every day? Listen to our Bible story to find out what Daniel did every day. Daniel was a man who loved God. One way he showed his love was by praying to God. Daniel prayed to God one, two, three times every day. Daniel had an important job. He was the king s most important helper. The king liked Daniel very much. But there were some mean men who did not like Daniel. They were angry that the king liked Daniel better than them. These mean men thought of a plan to get Daniel in trouble with the king. They went to the king and said, King, we think you should make a rule that everyone must pray only to you. If people pray to anyone else but you, they will be thrown into a cave filled with lions! The king thought this rule was a good idea. The king sent helpers to tell all the people they must pray only to him. The angry men watched to see what Daniel would do. The next day Daniel opened his window, just like he always did. Daniel prayed to God, just like he always did. He did not pray to the king. The mean men watched as Daniel prayed to God. Then the mean men ran to tell the king what they saw. Daniel was in trouble. The king was sad. The king did not want Daniel to be hurt, but the king had to obey the rule, too. Daniel was put into a big cave where lions lived. All night the king worried about Daniel s safety. The next morning, the king ran to the lions cave. He called, Daniel! DANIEL! Daniel called back from inside the cave, King, I am safe. God took care of me! The king was so glad that Daniel was not hurt! Daniel came out of the cave. The king knew that God had helped Daniel and kept him safe from the lions. Then the king told everyone what God had done. He made a new rule that everyone should love God and pray only to Him. 406 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Discovering God s Love Leader s Guide

Talk About the Story Who did Daniel pray to? (Only God.) We can pray to God, too, and He will help us. What can we say when we pray to God? (We love You. Thank You. Please help us.) Sing to God Let s sing a song about different times when we can talk to God. Lead children in singing I Can Talk to God (track 12 on CD). According to the song, when are some times we can talk to God? (When we re playing in the yard or resting on our beds. When we re sad or cranky. Anytime.) We can talk to God any time we want to! Hear and Say Holding your Bible open to Psalm 69:13, say verse aloud. Lord is another name for God. We can pray to God. God loves and helps us. Lead children in repeating the verse two or three times. Then add the word at and a time of day. I pray to you, O Lord, (at bedtime). Children echo the phrase after you. Repeat several times, using different times of the day, days of the week or seasons of the year. Option: Older children make up motions for each word and do them while you and other children say the verse. Option: Briefly tell an age-appropriate example of a time God helped you. Pray to God Children repeat the following prayer after you, one phrase at a time: Dear God,... I m so glad... that I can talk to You... anytime!... Thank You for loving us... and helping us.... We love You.... In Jesus name, amen. Praise to God Children sit in a circle. Roll ball to a child. Child tells something he or she can pray to God about. Child rolls ball to another child who tells something he or she can pray to God about. Continue until each child has had an opportunity to share. Close activity in a brief prayer. Dear God, thank You that we can pray to You. Thank You that You love us. In Jesus name, amen. 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only.
