The 10 Commandments Exodus 20:1-17 (A sermon to help us realise how important it is for us to obey The 10 Commandments as they are not the ten suggestions, but The 10 Commandments that show our love for God and our hatred towards sin and lawlessness.) Introduction: A SERMON DELIVERED AT THE HAENERTSBURG CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN HAENERTSBURG, SOUTH AFRICA 19th July 2015 Dr. Ian F. Loughor-Clarke admin@haenertsburgchristianchurch.co.za A little known tale of how God came to give the Jews the Ten Commandments. God first went to the Egyptians and asked them if they would like a commandment. "What's a commandment?" they asked. "Well, it's like, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," replied God. The Egyptians thought about it and then said, "No way, that would ruin our weekends." So then God went to the Assyrians and asked them if they would like a commandment. They also asked, "What's a commandment?" "Well," said God, "It's like, THOU SHALT NOT STEAL." The Assyrians immediately replied, "No way. That would ruin our economy." So finally God went to the Jews and asked them if they wanted a commandment. They asked, "How much?" God said, "They're for free." The Jews said, "Great! We'll take TEN!" 1 We are going to have a look at the 10 Commandments and please note it is not the 10 Suggestions. The 10 Commandments are a blessing to this world and they are not there to restrict us, but to protect us and bless us as God s people. They God s moral, righteous, standards on which we are called to live. God gives the Israelites His law which is known as His first covenant or The Ten Commandments. His law was just and right and this sadly has been forgotten. The 10 Commandments is a perfect law that is completely just and righteous. It is amazing laws that cover all the main 1 source: http://www.jokes4us.com/ethnicjokes/jewishjokes/10commandmentsjoke.html. The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 1

circumstances of life. Both the interests of God and man are taken into account and is an impartial law. Not one commandment can be removed and not one needs to be added because it is perfect, holy, just and good. The 10 Commandments are perfect just like the God who made them and so we should make very sure that we know the 10 Commandments and stick to these statutes. The 10 Commandments is basically divided up into two parts with the first four been related to our relationship with God and the last six related to our relationship with mankind. You see The 10 Commandments are summed up as God s two greatest commandments that we are to follow on how to love God and to love one s neighbour as oneself. Matthew 22:37 40 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. a 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. b 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Romans 13:10 10 Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. John 14:15 15 If you love me, you will obey what I command. 1. The 10 Commandments were given by God three times. A. Orally. Exodus 20:1 17. B. Written. Exodus 24:12 ; 31:18 Exodus 31:18 18 When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God. Moses then comes down from the mountain with the two tablets in hand and when he sees God s people worshipping a golden calf he loses it and troughs the tablets to the ground and they break. C. Written once again. Exodus 34:1, 28,29; Deuteronomy 10:4. The Israelites had been delivered out of captivity in Egypt we had been for 400 years. Moses then goes to Egypt s and leads the Israelites in the most miraculous way through the Red Sea a Deut. 6:5 b Lev. 19:18 The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 2

and is delivered from Egyptian slavery. Eventually Moses and the Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai. This is rather amazing because this is the place where God said to him, I am who I am in the burning bush may years before where he called Moses to lead his people out of slavery. You see it interesting because God didn t say that I am who you think I should be but rather I am who I am and you either choose to accept me and love me or you choose to reject me. Now he is once again at the same spot where he was before where God spoke through a burning bush where Moses got the instruction to go and lead God s people out from the Egyptian slavery. Now he is back at the same place, but this time he has 2 million people with him and seen God s faithfulness in fulfilling His Word. What an incredible promise and the reality been fulfilled at the same place. Now he is once again at Mount Sinai and God is wanting to give him the 10 Commandments so that they have a clear instruction on how to conduct their lives from here on out. The reason for this is that they had been so affected by the Egyptians that they needed moral code of conduct on how to look in life that pleased God. Exodus 19:18 18 Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain b trembled violently, Can you imagine what a sight that must ve been and the display of God s glory? 2. The 10 Commandments were given the first time. Exodus 20:1 17 20 And God spoke all these words: 2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 You shall have no other gods before a me. 4 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 13 You shall not murder. b Most Hebrew manuscripts; a few Hebrew manuscripts and Septuagint all the people a Or besides The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 3

14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 You shall not covet your neighbor s house. You shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. These commandments were given by God and was not open for suggestion or debate as we see in this day and age where people think they know better than God. Sadly many people think that they can do a better job and then God and have chosen to write their own Commandments but will never match the perfection of the 10 Commandments given by God. The illuminati have written their own 10 Commandments and is known as American Stonehenge all the Georgia Guidestones. No one knows who paid to have it engraved and put up but is rather obvious that it s the illuminati who are the pawns of Satan to bring about the one world government. This all 2 It is now have a look at each of the 10 Commandments separately. 1. You shall have no other god s before me. Exodus 20:3 3 You shall have no other gods before a me. 2 http://sydesjokes.com/page.php?v1=ten%20commandments&v2=t/ten_commandments.jpg &v3=t&v4=religion. a Or besides The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 4

Now we are all the aware that many people claim that this or that is God and can and should be worshipped. However God sees you shall have no other gods except Him. This was never up for debate or discussion and still this day is not up for debate or discussion. So every religion in the world is a total waste of time for the is only one God and he s to be worshipped and praised. 2. You shall not make for yourself an idol or worship any idol. Exodus 20:4-6 4 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Exodus 20:7 7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. The name of God is to be worshipped and praised not to be abused and used as a curse word. Tragically so you see the name of the Lord used in an adjective in many forms today in my many people without any regard for the consequence of their actions. Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is to be worship praised and adored and not to be used as a adjective in one speech. No one that behaves like this will go unpunished. 4. Remember the Sabbath by keeping it holy. Exodus 20:8-11 8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. God works six days and rested on the seventh is an example to you and I of how we are to live life. We are not used the seventh day is an extra day to make money but rather a day for reflection on God and his faithfulness and goodness to us as these people. A backslider suddenly began attending church faithfully on Sunday mornings instead of going fishing. The pastor was highly gratified and told him, "How wonderful it makes me feel to see you at services with your good wife! "Well, Preacher," said the fisherman, "it's a matter of choice. I'd rather hear your sermon than hers." The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 5

5. Honour your father and your mother. Exodus 20:12 12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. It does not say that we are to hour our father and mother because they deserve our honor, but rather that we are to honour our parent s full stop. Now I m well aware that some parents do not deserve any honour from the children, however God does not give children an option, but a command the day to honour the appearance with they think they deserve the honour or not. This is the only one of the Commandments that comes with the promise of a long life for those that adhere to this commandment. 6. You shall not murder. Exodus 20:13 13 You shall not murder. Well this is rather obvious isn t it however this is not the case for some people so it is not obvious. We are not called to sit in judgement and take the law into our hands and take another person s life. There are however places where God gives the right to the government to take people s lives that do not belong in society because of the callused evil behavior. Romans 13:4 4 For he is God s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. There are the passages in Scripture with this is confirmed however they are not many just governments in the world today and they will be judged for the leadership decisions. 7. You shall not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14 14 You shall not commit adultery. This causes tremendous heartache and fracture of the family and the disruption of little children s lives and is devastating and heartbreaking not just to the husband and wife, but to the extended family as well. It also causes tremendous financial stress to society for numerous reasons. This shows a violent disregard for God and His Word and ones covenant marriage partner. 1 Corinthians 6:9 11 9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 6

the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. You see we need to understand that the 10 Commandments are not there to save us, but to show us our need of God as our Savior. Do you see that it says that some of them used to live like this but now they ve come to a knowledge that it is unacceptable before God and of bending knees before him and the lives begin a new and fresh. So if you have lived like this in the past from this day forth you need to repent and never to turn back to your old way of living. Then the grace and mercy in favour and salvation of God will rest upon your life. 8. You shall not steal. Exodus 20:15 15 You shall not steal. 9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour. Exodus 20:16 16 You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Sadly we see many people lying in this day and age and maligning and blackening other people s names even on the Internet for the world to see even though it is not true. Lying is wrong no matter which way you one from the point and we are not to be partaker in lies. 10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbour. Exodus 20:17 17 You shall not covet your neighbor s house. You shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. We are to be overjoyed and excited for those that do well and are blessed. We are not to be jealous of what they have, but rather be glad for what they have. There is no problem to have desires for greater things in life but the problem arises when you re not content with were you at and what you have. 3. The 10 Commandments were given to be obeyed. Any law that is put in place that goes against any of the 10 Commandments should be contested and most certainly never submitted to by any person that called himself a Christian. Even if it means been thrown into the lion s den or losing our lives. Jesus Christ made it clear that The 10 Commandments are the foundation, framework and basis of the Old Covenant and all of His laws. The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 7

Matthew 19:17 17 Why do you ask me about what is good? Jesus replied. There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments. Psalm 19:7 11 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. 11 By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 4. The 10 Commandments were given to be obeyed forever. Malachi 3:6 6 I the LORD do not change. Hebrews 13:8 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. After God gave The 10 Commandments he gave terrible consequences to those that choose to disobey His commands. And this punishment was death. God drew a sword against the evil of sin when he gave The 10 Commandments. On the other side of the pendulums however God promised blessings to those that obey His laws. 5. The 10 Commandments were given to show us our need for a Saviour. Sin is basically the transgression of God s 10 Commandments 1 John 3:4 6 4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. The joy of the Lord is my strength Nehemiah 8:10 8

6. The 10 Commandments were given to be written on our hearts. God can only allow law to be written on your heart and minds when you diligently study, learn and grow in the knowledge of who He is. Hebrews 8:10 12 10 This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, Know the Lord, because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. c I would like you to walk under here name or 10 Commandments by heart and in a show your short little clip and in three minutes from now you will know all 10 by heart. Show the clip: Learn the Ten Commandments.mp4 The Ten Commandments I You shall have no other gods before me. II You shall not make for yourself an idol or worship any idol.
