Deny Yourself Take up your cross. Lose your life. Hate your father, your mother, your family, and your own life. Bear the cross. Renounce all you have. Deny myself. Cannot be His disciple. If I do not deny myself. I cannot be His disciple. If you do not deny yourself. You cannot be His disciple. Jesus wants us to rethink our enthusiasm for Him. This is hard to hear. This sounds harsh. But it is exactly what Jesus would say to the crowds. any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. Many want the salvation Christ offers, without the submission that comes with it. Is there any truth in that for you? Do you love Jesus as your Savior, but not as your Lord (Master)? Do you have a hard time coming under His authority? Luke 14:33 (1984 NIV) 2 3

We love to talk about: The love of God. The forgiveness of Jesus. The salvation God provides. After all, these things are astounding! But Jesus has always asked us to consider the cost of following Him. Following Jesus has always meant both death and life. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Gal. 2:20 4 5

Laying down our lives. Denying ourselves. Taking up our crosses. Following after Christ. What, specifically, makes this hard for you? Is there something you re holding on to so tightly that keeps you from surrendering? What message from the world have you bought into that makes the cost of following Christ seem so overwhelming? When did you last follow Christ to the point of denying yourself? What did this feel like? Where did it lead you? How did God show up? 6 7

So much self-indulgence. Inundated with lifting up greed. Having it all. No thought of other people. Take care of me and mine. As Christians we are navigating the ways of our culture and the call of Jesus. We have to recognize that the message of the world will always be in opposition to that call. It s time to stand out. To show the world who we are living for. It is a war. We must notice. We must choose, not every day, but every moment, to follow the way of Jesus. If we don t, we will look just like everyone else. 8 9

Say no. Say no to the way of the world. Look different. Cause people to wonder WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK WHEN THEY WATCH YOUR LIFE? Why is she like that? Why does he care? What is it about her that makes her stand out? Why is he so generous, kind, caring? Don t answer this question too quickly. Don t picture yourself at your best moment and act like this reflects who you are in every moment. Don t compare yourself to those who give nothing and refuse to ever serve. Instead, think about who you could be, who Jesus would have you be, what your life might look like if you were truly surrendered. If you actually denied yourself each day and followed Jesus without reservation. Would your spouse or close friends say that you are passionate and committed to denying self and following Jesus? What stories would your neighbors tell about how you have served them, denied yourself, and revealed the presence and grace of Jesus? 10 11

Irene s Story She fell for a bad boy. His drinking increased, his meanness intensified, and her fear grew with the passing weeks and months. Then, the news. She was pregnant. It is one thing to put yourself in harm s way. But a mother s heart protects. It had been ten years, and she was ready to leave him, and he knew it. He begged her to forgive him and stay with him. She was a new believer in Jesus, but she was done, it was over, there was nothing in her that still loved him. Mary, her mentor and a godly older woman, spoke to Irene: God wants you to forgive him. Honey, you have to forgive your husband. Then, Jesus added His voice to the conversation: Irene, I stretched out My arms like this, and I took My last breath for you too, but also for your husband. You want Me to forgive you, but you are not willing to forgive. Have you been there? Called to forgive, to love, to extend grace, to sacrifice? What did you do? What could you do? Are you there today? Quit comparing yourself to your husband, and compare yourself to Christ. 12 13

We can become our own worst enemy. Sometimes we keep ourselves from God by our resistance to the work He wants to do. By our refusal to live as He calls us to live. Sometimes we spend so much time in struggling and in misery because we won t deny ourselves. God is saying, If you would just do it, you would stop whining and complaining because you would be so filled with joy and peace. That moment was the beginning of my Christian walk. That was when I began to understand the simplicity of God s Word. God says, Obey. If you love Me, you ll obey My commandments. So many battles over sin or doing hard things for God are won or lost in our own minds. Do I say yes and do the right thing? Do I give in to my own comfort? My fear? My flesh? 14 15

Think of a time you really let go of self and followed Jesus, trusting Him even though it was hard and you were afraid. What happened? How did God work in and through you? What fruit did you see God bear? What did you miss out on while you were busy following God? Would you do it again? What stops you? 16 17

It is a moment of truth, a sweatshirt moment. Will I give, serve, sacrifice, and deny self? Will I follow Jesus? These are life-defining moments. They are Spirit-laden opportunities. JUST A STUPID SWEATSHIRT When did you face a sweatshirt moment? How did you respond? How can a moment like this help to define your future and your faith? How might God show up in these moments? What sweatshirt moment are you facing right now? Have you ever considered that learning to deny yourself might start with seemingly small acts of obedience? You think you must have what you want. But when you let go, you recognize God s beauty and faithfulness. It satisfies you. You become content. You are freed for greater moments of surrender. You are actually cultivating self-control, which is a huge part of learning to deny yourself. (See 1 Tim. 4:7 10, 1 Cor. 9:24 27) 18 19

It is too easy to become lazy in our Christian walk. Are you expecting amazing spiritual fruit from your life, with little to no effort on your part? Have you lost sight of the joy of offering your very life to Christ? What joys might you taste if you take a chance, trust God, and deny self? 20 21

Romans 12:1 says: In view of God s mercy we offer ourselves as living sacrifices. Spend a moment reflecting on God s mercy. Is there any sacrifice too great for God, when His mercy is in view? When we listen to the lies, we miss out on the joy and truth of following Jesus. What might Irene and Domingo have missed if they had believed the lies? What did they gain as they denied self and followed Jesus? 22 23

24 25

Irene and Domingo have an understanding of what it means to follow Jesus as they deny self Do you have to pray not to lie? Do you have to pray not to murder? God s will is clear; take in the orphans! When we both feel it is the right thing to do, we just do it! We don t even have to pray about it. What are you bold and confident about? Do you agree that there are things you don t need to pray about? What step can you take to move forward in God s leading for your life? What might you have to deny along the way? If I had not gone through all I went through, I would not have had what I needed to love all of these children. What has God taken you through? How was He preparing you? What might He do through you if you are willing to deny self and follow? 26 27

I DO BELIEVE God is better. It is worth pushing through my weakness. My fear. My selfishness. DENY YOURSELF Take up your cross and follow Me. If you lose your life for My sake, you will find it. 28 29
