Synod News Upcoming Events Joys and Concerns Congregational News Synod Transitions Synod News Severe Spring Storms Update A tornado in Moore, Okla., was part of a May 18-19 storm system that swept across Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. According to news reports, 24 people are confirmed dead with 20 in Moore and four in Oklahoma City. The tornado, which traveled on the ground for 20 miles, demolished an elementary school and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses. Two ELCA congregations in Kansas were impacted by tornadoes May 19. Zion Lutheran Church in Hollenberg, Kan., and Good Shepherd Lutheran in Washington, Kan., both sustained damage to church property. No one was injured in the storms. The ELCA has made worship resources available in response to recent severe storms and through Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA members and congregations may support tornado survivors in partnership with local Lutheran affiliates and ELCA synods. Registration for the 2013 Synod Assembly (June 7-8 at Our Savior's Lutheran in Sioux Falls) will close this Friday, May 24 at 5:00 PM (CDT). No further registrations will be taken online or by phone after that time.if you have questions about assembly registration, please contact Lois Borchardt at 605-274-4025 or lborchardt@sdsynod.org. Register now on the synod website! Synod Assembly Preliminary Report and Materials Online The 2013 Preliminary Report is now available online. You may download the full Preliminary Report or download and print sections individually from the synod website. Also posted online is the 2012 Audit Report, 2013 Resolutions Packet, and the Proposed 2014 Compensation Guidelines. Voting members are responsible for bringing these materials to the synod assembly, either printed or digitally. Wifi will be available in the Celebrate Center during the Assembly if you would like to read your reports on your laptop or tablet. A very limited number of copies will be made available at the assembly. Synod Assembly Housing Please make housing arrangements soon for the Synod Assembly June 7-8! There is a soccer tournament that weekend and housing will be limited. You are responsible for making your own reservations. The ELCA is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2013 under the theme, "Always being made new." We will also be celebrating this anniversary at the South Dakota Synod Assembly. Dakota Road at Synod Assembly South Dakota's own Dakota Road will be at the 2013 Synod Assembly as our music and worship leaders. They will also be giving a Thursday evening "Stories and Song" Concert. All are welcome to hear stories of God's work through the South Dakota and ELCA and enjoy the music of Dakota Road. One-to-One Training Webinar with Sue Engh Tuesday, May 28 7:00-8:00 pm CDT or Thursday, May 30 7:00-8:00 pm CDT Listening to God comes through prayer, Word and Sacrament. Listening to discover the possibilities for mission and ministry in our congregations and communities happens through listening to one another and to our neighbors. In this one hour training, Rev. Susan Engh, program director of ELCA Congregational based Community Organizing, will offer the basic training for and model/practice a "one-to-one" conversation. Groups learn well together! Bilingual Vacation Bible School registration now open A Bilingual Vacation Bible School (Spanish and English) will be offered at First Lutheran from Monday, June 17, through Thursday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for first- through fourth-graders. It is an opportunity for relationships with children of Pueblo de Dios, the Lutheran Latino Ministry at Augustana Lutheran, and also for children in the Sioux Falls community who attend the Spanish immersion program through the Sioux Falls School District. Space is limited;; those who pre-register with payment by Sunday, May 26, are guaranteed a spot. Registrations received after the deadline may be placed on a waiting list.
