Preschool Summer Lesson 1: Genesis Abram Follows God Objectives: Students will 1) Read the Bible account of Abram following God 2) See that Abram obeyed God and worshiped Him 3) Play an action game to remember that God wanted Abram to follow Him. 4) See that we should worship God to because He is wonderful 5) Play games to remember who Abram was and that he followed God. Accommodations: How will I accommodate individual needs of students? Use lots of visuals and actions to keep children s attention. Allow them to color a page while you read the story if they are unable to stay focused for very long Break up the lesson if needed by singing songs or doing an active game in a different order if they need to get up and move around Help students stay focused by going through sheets in order and helping them follow by pointing to your page where they should be focused. Sit beside children who are fidgety to help them stay focused. Learn their names the best way to get someone back on track is to call them by name Remember to say Please and Thank you this is important for them to learn and see displayed in your actions as well. Lesson: 1) Introduction to lesson: As students enter, welcome them and help find a chair to sit at. Thank them for coming. Take attendance (using attendance chart supplied). Write each child s name on the sheet provided. Let each child put a sticker beside their name for this week. Have them sit around the table. Share with students, My name is and I will be your teacher this quarter. Here is my assistant to help. This month we will look at people in the Bible who followed God. In the Bible are many books. The first book is the book of Genesis that is the book that showed us about how God created the world and about Adam and Eve and Noah and the Ark. Now we are going to study other people in the book of Genesis and see how they had a relationship with God. Let s first sing a song: God Made Me Sung to Farmer in the Dell Tune God made the sun, (Raise arms in circle overhead.) God made the tree, (Spread arms out to indicate branches.) God made you, (Point to another person.) And God made me! (Point to self.) God made Abram. (Point to the boys.) God made Sarai. (Point to the girls.) God made you, and God made me. (Point to others and then yourself.) We are going to study today that God made families and the first family we will talk about is Abram and his family! We will learn that Abram followed God and we should follow God too! 2) Abram Follows God Bible Reading and Activity Sheet 15 minutes *Optional: If you have a puppet you can use the puppet to tell the event in the Bible. Read Genesis 12:1 5 from the Bible, have children sit quietly while you read. After reading hand out the Follow Along with Abram sheet one to each child and have them look at the first picture. Hand out crayons and then ask them to do the first direction on the page for number 1. Read what it says to do aloud. Remind them that the first picture is what we just read in the Bible that Abram followed God and left Haran. While they are coloring the first box on the page, ask the following question. Who is in the picture? Abram, Sarai and Lot who was Abram s nephew. What promises did God make to Abram? Abram would be made into a great nation, he would be blessed, his name would be great, God would protect him, and everyone on earth would be blessed because of Abram. Let the children finish coloring the first box and then start the following: Read Genesis 12:6 7. Ask students:

What promise did God give Abram at Shechem? That Abram s descendants would get this land. On your Follow Along sheet, I will read the directions for box number two point to the box for each child so they know what box to look at and read the directions, then have them do the directions for picture number 2. Now let s go on to the next verses, read Genesis 12:8 9 On your Follow Along sheet, listen to the directions for box number 3 can you all point to box number 3 and show me what is the next box we are going to work on? Good, now let s do what the directions say just like Abram followed God we will follow the directions! Have students do the directions for box 3. When finished say: Now let s work on box number 4 listen as I read the directions and you follow along ok? Have students finish coloring the page and then move on. Isn t that great! God asked Abram to leave and Abram and his family trusted God that He would keep them safe and they obeyed God. That made God happy! It makes Him happy too when we follow God and come to church on Sunday. Did you come to church today? Yes! That makes God happy that you listen and follow God! Let s sing a song about worshiping God just like Abram did. Sing: This is the Way Sung to the tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush This is the way we sing to God, Sing to God, sing to God. This is the way we sing to God, When we worship Him. This is the way we pray to God, Pray to God, pray to God. This is the way we pray to God, When we worship Him. (Show hands together as if in prayer) This is the way we read our Bible, Read our Bible, read our Bible. This is the way we read our Bible, when we worship Him. (Show hands opening as if your hands were a book and you were trying to read)

3) Follow God Abram Game 5 minutes Line the students up in a row so that they can all see you and have enough space to move their hands and feet without hitting anyone beside them. Say to the students: I am going to say Abram and then an action word. I want you to follow and do what I say. Just like Abram followed God and went where God told him, we are going to follow along and do what I say, ok? Ready? Everyone quiet and listen..good job Abram touch your hands together Abram touch your feet. Abram say Thank You God. Abram pack your bags (pretend to pack bags for moving) Abram say I follow God Abram say God made our family Abram jump up and down Abram turn around Abram sit down! Thank class for playing and then have them sit at the table for the next activity. 4) Ways I Tell God He is Wonderful Activity Sheet 5 minutes Hand out one sheet to each child and have the children look at each picture and describe what is going on in that picture and how it shows the child worshiping God and showing that God is wonderful and worthy to be followed. Say, these children are doing different things that make God happy going to bed when they are told, going to church, playing nice, cleaning up when asked, and more. Just like Abram we need to remember to do what God says and follow Him! Help them write their name on the page before moving on to the next activity. 5) Optional: Sand Box Play Time with Abram 5 10 minutes Before class make pipe cleaner tents and dolls and/or purchase plastic dolls with plastic animals. Fill a large flat plastic bin ¼ of the way with sand for the children to play in. If needed make two bins if there are more than 4 children so they all have a side to play in. Explain that Abram moved because God asked him and while he was moving from place to place he lived in tents and would have to move his animals along with him as well. Let the children move the dolls from place to place along with animals and tents. Pretend the people are Abram and his family. Talk about Abram and how he lived in a tent in the desert. 6) Optional: Follow the Leader Abram Follows God Game 5 minutes Have students line up behind you. Tell them they are going to play follow the leader just like Abram followed God. Have teacher assistant go at the back of the line so he/she can watch the children and keep them in line. March around the room doing different actions

that they are to follow as you go, examples are pat your head, once everyone is marching and patting their head, then switch to put arms in the air and back down, jump up and down, hop on one foot, tip toe, crawl, etc. The idea is to get the children to follow you. When finished, tell them Good job you followed just like Abram did. Abram left home and went where God told him you followed me and went where I told you. Let s remember that it is good to follow God and do what He says just like Abram. 7) Optional: We Follow God Roll the Ball Game 5 minutes During class, tell the kids, Let s now all sit on the floor in a circle. While we are in the circle we are going to pass the ball to one another, as you pass the ball gently to a person I want you to say, I follow God! You can only pass the ball to someone who hasn t had a turn yet, if someone catches the ball that already had a turn, you must give it to someone who hasn t so we call get a chance to play, ok? Remember, the person who passes the ball, must say I follow God. Make sure each child gets a turn before doing another round or moving on to another activity. 8) Optional: Donkey Craft (Part B will be done next week) 10 15 minutes Part A Before class cut out two templates of the donkey head for each child onto grey or brown construction or cardstock paper. Next, twist a coat hanger (see picture to the right) to make a figure 8 shape. After students color their donkeys you will tape the wire as shown onto the inside of the donkey s head before you tape or glue the two sides of its head together. During class have students color eyes, nose and ears of donkey with crayons. Insert the wire hanger and tape it to one side of the inside of the donkey s head and then tape, glue or even staple the donkey head together (one on each side put together makes a full donkey head with the wire loop sticking out). Add the ears at the top (see picture below). Next cut yarn into strips, hand out yarn and with glue, make a glue strip down one side of the donkey head to his neck, have students place pieces of yarn across the strip of glue to make a mane (see picture to the right.) Put the donkey head aside to dry. Stop at this point so that the donkey can dry over the week. Tell students, next week we will make a bag, blanket and reins for our donkeys and be able to ride him just like Abram and his family might have rode donkeys as well! But for now we need to put them away so their mane or new hair can dry and be ready for next week! Let s all help clean up before going on to the next activity.

9) Sing Choose songs from the Songs section of the binder especially songs about Abraham 10) Optional Snack: Animal Crackers 5 minutes You ve all done a great job this morning learning that Abram followed God. Hand out animal crackers along with a glass of water or juice to each child. Explain that, When Abram traveled as God told him, he collected a lot of sheep, cows, donkeys, and camels. See if you can find any of those in your animal crackers! Provide a napkin for children to clean their hands. Discuss questions while snacking! After snack have kids clean up. Then move on to the remaining activities. 11) Close in prayer Thank You God for the world You made and for showing us people in the Bible who followed You. Thank you God for our families too. Thank God that we can follow You and worship You. We pray that we will do so in a kind and nice way that makes You happy just like Abram did. Thank you God for your Son Jesus who loves us too and thank you God for everyone here today and those who could not be here because they were sick or away. We pray you will bring us all back to Sunday school next week safely. In Jesus name, Amen. 12) Remind students To take home any sheets or crafts. Thank them for coming and ask them to help clean up before they leave. 13) Greet Parents at door Ensure all students go to parents or if some students remain kindly ask them to go to their parents. Thank you for serving Christ in this way!
