WEDDING BANNS RICHARD SMITH AND JENNIFER BRADSHAW JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD Misericordiae Vultus: The Face of Mercy is Pope Francis' official decree announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy. But Francis had already declared that Jesus "has shown the face of God's mercy" back in 2013 on his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis described Luke's account of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem: "Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air. Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings... has bent down to heal body and soul." Entering Jerusalem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis continued, at our sicknesses and sins. "A beautiful scene, full of light the light of the love of Jesus" (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday homily, March 24, 2013). May this Jubilee Year's Holy Week and Triduum make us Jesus' own light-bearers and love-givers to all who long to see the Face of Mercy. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Palm Sunday and the Passion On this Palm Sunday, we experience the Passion of Christ: His Agony in the Garden, betrayal by Judas, denial by Peter, trial, mockery, Way of the Cross and Crucifixion. By his Passion, Christ delivered us from Satan and from sin. He merited for us the new life in the Holy Spirit. His grace restores what sin had damaged in us (CCC, 1708). Christ also provided a new meaning for suffering by giving it redemptive power. How can you sanctify the suffering in your life? archstl.org/dynamic

Dear Parishioners, First I want to extend my thanks and appreciation to all who helped to make our St. Patrick s Day celebration such a wonderful, community event. We could not have done it without the generous giving of time and effort by so many. And thanks to all who supported this event by your attendance. It is always rewarding to see so many gather to celebrate our parish community. Welcome to our celebration of Palm Sunday! Today marks the beginning of the days we call Holy Week. At our celebration today we will take up palms and tell the story of how Jesus came into the holy city, Jerusalem, riding over a carpet of branches, cheered by people waving branches. At all of our liturgies this weekend, we will have the account of Jesus passion. During Holy Week, we will celebrate Triduum (which is Latin, for three days ) Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. During this three day celebration we are invited to enter into Jesus life, death and resurrection. The very best way to respond to the Passion is to live it and celebrate it in community. I encourage you to participate to plan ahead this coming week so that the whole time from this Thursday night until the Easter Vigil is free of any social engagements; free from work, free from entertainment, and free from meals, except for the simplest nourishment. These days should be free for prayer, reflection and silence. I hope everyone feels encouraged to gather together for these greatest days of celebration. Here at Holy Infant, on Holy Thursday, at 7:00 p.m., we will gather in church to celebrate the Mass of the Lord s Supper remembering what the Lord gave to us at his last supper an example of service and a meal that would never end. Following this liturgy, all are invited to join us for our Seven Churches Tour. On Good Friday at 1:00 in the afternoon in church, many of our 8th grade students will perform the Passion and Teachings of Jesus Christ. At 3:00 in the afternoon we will gather in church to journey with Christ through the Stations of the Cross. And at 7:30 in the evening, we will lift high the cross of Christ and honor it not as a sign of defeat, but as our pathway for salvation. And, finally, on Holy Saturday, at 8:00 in the evening, we will gather in the darkness of church so that the light of the risen Christ can penetrate our world and our hearts. On that night, we will go with all the newly baptized to wash ourselves in the life-giving waters of our Risen Lord. I encourage you to mark your calendars now for Holy Week here at Holy Infant so that you can come and celebrate with us the holiest week in the life of our Church. God s blessings for a prayerful and blessed Holy Week!

ONE WHO SERVES In the long form of the Passion from Luke's Gospel, Jesus refers to himself as "the one who serves" (Luke 22:27). This reminds me of today's second reading from Paul's letter to the Philippians. He says that Christ "emptied himself, taking the form of a slave" (Philippians 2:7). Jesus is not just being humble here. He gives us an example of how far God will go in loving humanity. I suspect the apostles were confused when Jesus talked this way. Yet he tells them to be like a servant--expect little reward for what you do for others. Jesus reminds them that the world looks at the person being served as more important than the servant. But he is one who serves and if the apostles are to be leaders of the church they will need to be servants, too. Why? Because that is how God comes to the people. With the example of service that Jesus shows toward those who put him to death, can we at least be "one who serves" those around us? Can we at least forgive those who hurt us--maybe even pray for our leaders, especially the ones with whom we disagree. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Father Stanger is celebrating 25 years in the priesthood. To honor his service, a special luncheon reception will be held in the upper cafeteria immediately following the noon Mass on Sunday, April 24th. All are welcome! Do you have photos of Fr. Stanger s service while at Holy Infant? Please email them to: csnicholson1@gmail.com no later than April 15th. Triduum Adoration Hours The Blessed Sacrament will be reposed on 3/24/16 at 7:00 p.m. until 3/28/16 at 8:00 a.m. Adoration resumes 3/28/16 at 8:30 a.m. Happy and Blessed Easter!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION AND FAITHFUL DEVOTION TO THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Jesus took His place at table...he said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for I tell you, I shall not eat it again un l there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God. Dear Friends, It s baseball season again and the Knights invite you to register for our spring and summer 2016 game, Play Baseball with the Knights. It couldn t be simpler to play. Here s how it works. Each registered participant will receive a randomly drawn Play Baseball with the Knights certificate for the 2016 baseball season. Each certificate will have the names of three National League Baseball Teams. These three teams are your participating teams for the entire 26 week baseball season and will determine whether or not you are a winner in our game. THERE WILL BE A WINNER EVERY WEEK! IT S A 50/50 PAYOUT! Each week of the season, our Play Baseball committee will total the number of runs each National League team scores during games played that week (for the purpose of this game, a week is defined as beginning on Monday and ending the following Sunday). The holder of the certificate with the three teams that scored the highest combined total number of runs that week will be awarded an amount based on the number of tickets sold. If no one has purchased that ticket, the holder of the highest points sold will WIN a smaller award. The next week s highest combo award winner will be higher! The holder of the certificate with the three teams that scored the fewest combined total number of runs that week will be awarded an amount determined by participation. Again, if no winner, the next week s winner will be higher! Multiple winners divide the award. You can register once and you re eligible all 26 weeks. It s that easy. ELIGIBILITY FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON COSTS ONLY $25.00 (THAT S LESS THAN $1.00 PER WEEK TO PLAY). To register for the 2016 season, complete the attached form and return it by March 20th with $25.00. Then look for your certificate(s) in time for Opening Day of the 2016 baseball season. Don t forget to invite your family and friends to play too! The registration form is below. Feel free to make copies of this registration form for them. By the way, there are only 458 possible combinations, so odds of winning are not in the millions. IT S SIMPLE; IT S FUN; AND YOU RE HELPING THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS IN THEIR CHARITABLE ENDEAVORS, SO REGISTER TODAY! YES, I want to play baseball with the Knights! Please make check payable to K. O. C. and mail to K. O. C., 98 Baxter Acres Dr., Ballwin, MO 63011.

VISITING SEVEN CHURCHES TOUR HOLY THURSDAY MARCH 24 We invite you to join your fellow Holy Infant parishioners in the ancient devotion of Visiting Seven Churches on March 24 following our Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord s Supper. You are welcome to ride the bus ($10 fee) or caravan behind the bus as we journey to 6 churches to pray before their Altars of Repose. Please make your reservation for the bus and have the money to the parish office by Monday, March 21. PASSION The word passion connotes deep, focused engagement. It also relates to passivity, interestingly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel narrative from Luke is Jesus. He appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence. The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchanging. We are the ones who change. Each year, we bring ourselves with another year s history to hear and heed the story we so badly need. Life has its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

March 20, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The annual Easter collection for Regina Cleri will be taken up in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016. Financial support for Regina Cleri primarily comes from this annual Easter collection and the Annual Catholic Appeal. Under the guidance of Cardinal Joseph Ritter, Regina Cleri opened as a home for retired archdiocesan priests in 1959. Cardinal Ritter was considered ahead of his time for opening Regina Cleri. Regina Cleri offers our priests the opportunity to retire from service and continue to live in an active faith community. Although retired, many of the priests residing at Regina Cleri continue to assist in archdiocesan parishes, schools, Catholic organizations, nursing homes, and hospitals. They celebrate Mass, assist with Reconciliation, visit the sick, attend parish events, and serve as spiritual leaders/counselors. Please consider supporting the retired priests of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. These priests have served our archdiocese well and deserve both our prayers and financial support. We are very fortunate that the Archdiocese of St. Louis is able to provide excellent and proper care for our priests at Regina Cleri. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

In the 1930 s Jesus appeared to a young Polish nun, to ask her to tell the whole world about His Divine Mercy His love and forgiveness that waits to welcome every humble sinner into His arms. Pope John Paul II canonized that holy little nun, St. Faustine Kowalska and made the Sunday after Easter the Feast of Divine Mercy. JESUS LOVING DIVINE MERCY Holy Infant Parish will unite in prayer during this Year of Mercy in a special way on Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope Francis invites us to join with Catholics all over the world to pray for God s Mercy upon us and for that Mercy to flow through us out to everyone in our world. Bring the whole family and reflect on how Jesus longs for each of us to say with our whole hearts: Jesus, I trust in You. Divine Mercy Children s Program: Call Teresita La O at 314.520.7088 to reserve your child a spot. From 1:15 to 2:45 we will have babysi ng for infants and children up to age 3. For children ages 4-9, we offer the Jesus I trust in You children s ac vity in which the children will learn how to give their fears to Jesus and trust in His love, from a ny Easter Bunny and some actor apostles! Reserva ons needed for both. No drop-ins. (Bring children to the Nursery and rooms in the 5th grade hallway.)

THE MIRACLE OF DIVINE MERCY The message of Divine Mercy is that God is merciful. He is Love itself poured out for us and He wants no one to escape his merciful love. The promise of Jesus to Saint Faustina is that His Merciful Heart grants complete pardon to souls (plenary indulgence) that will go to Reconciliation and receive the Eucharist during Easter. The Significance of Divine Mercy Sunday Our Lord s promise to grant complete forgiveness of sins and punishment on the Feast of Mercy is recorded three times in the Diary of Blessed Faustina. I want to grant complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive the Eucharist on the Feast of Mercy (1109). Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment (300). The souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion will obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment (699). Our Lord is emphasizing, through this promise, the infinite value of Confession and Communion as miracles of mercy. He wants us to realize that, since the Eucharist is His own Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, it is the Fountain of Life (300). How painful it is to Me that souls so seldom unite themselves to me in Holy Communion. I wait for souls and they are indifferent toward Me. I want to lavish My graces on them and they do not want to accept them. They treat me as a dead object, whereas My Heart is full of love and mercy (1447). So the Feast of Mercy is both a reminder and a call. It is a reminder that He is truly present and alive in the Eucharist, filled with love for us and waiting for us to turn to Him with trust. It is a call for us to be washed clean in His love through Confession and Communion. God promises unlimited grace. How to observe the Feast of Mercy: 1) celebrate the Feast on the Sunday after Easter; 2) sincerely repent of all our sins; 3) go to confession before Divine Mercy Sunday; 4) receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast; 5) venerate the image of the Divine Mercy; 6) be merciful to others through our actions, words and prayer on their behalf. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is among the Catholic Church s most popular prayers and is meant to be said every day at 3:00 p.m. The chaplet uses a five decade rosary and asks for Mercy with a short prayer on each bead. Please join us in praying the nine day Novena to the Divine Mercy. We will begin on Good Friday, March 25. A copy of the Divine Mercy Novena is located in the vestibule.
