Rev. Karen Burtner Graham The Pillars April 2018 The mission of the New Concord United Methodist Church is to make and develop disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Pastor s Message Happy Easter and Happy April Fool s Day! What looks like the end isn t the end after all. God does an amazing thing and raises the crucified one from the dead. What a cool way to celebrate April Fool s Day this year by shouting, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! I always look forward to Easter Sunday even with all the extra work in church getting ready for it I still look forward to it. Because, honestly, I need Easter. Every year I need it over and over again I need it. I need to hear the story. I need to sing the songs. I need to shout Alleluia! I need to be with other people who believe that the final word is not death but life and that love does indeed conquer all, and that the future is filled with the assurance of hope. So I invite you to be here on Sunday, April 1 as we celebrate the Day of Resurrection. We ll sing. We ll rejoice. We ll be together as God s Easter people. Alleluia! Pastor Karen Easter Worship Schedule 7 a.m. Community Sunrise Service at LMIS with breakfast (The service is outdoors, weather permitting, so dress warmly. This year Friendship Baptist is leading the service, and Westminster Presbyterian is providing the breakfast.) 8:30 a.m. Worship at NCUMC with Holy Communion 10:30 a.m. Worship at NCUMC with Holy Communion and with music by Children s Choir and Aldersgate Choir

This and That The April Mission Giving Tree will be ready for donations starting April 15 th! This is our annual fundraiser for the Good Samaritan Fund, which is used to meet a variety of needs: gasoline, rent, utility bills, transportation, hotel rooms, medical expenses. This fund is one way we live out our vision to be a church where people are inspired to.demonstrate compassion, to serve others, and to share God s love with everyone. United Methodist Women s Sunday will be celebrated April 22 nd. Deaconess Sherri Buehl will be our guest preacher. She also serves as the Director of the Epworth Center. She will speak at both worship services. There will be a Trustee Work Day on April 28 th. Meet at the church at 9 a.m. and be prepared to work both inside and outside. A training event, Resisting Racism will be held on Saturday, April 28 th at Family of Faith UMC in Akron, Ohio. The event is presented by the General Commission on Religion and Race and is sponsored by several other East Ohio Conference committees. Three consecutive courses will be presented and persons may attend one or all of them: *Morning session: Resisting Racism 101: for people just beginning who need to learn how to define racism, recognize the differences between individual and structural racism, and understand the basic difference between equality and equity. *Afternoon session 1: Resisting Racism 201: from Building Relationships to Anti-Racism for people who have been doing some work but need extra steps *Afternoon session 2: Resisting Racism 301: Honorably Building Multicultural Anti-Racist Coalitions for people who want to do the work of resisting racism at the level of policy, procedure, power, and practice. Registration forms are available in the church office and on line at http://eoc-resistingracism.eventbrite.com. There is a $15 fee which covers the presenter, materials, light refreshments and lunch. Pastor Karen is attending and will stay at least through the afternoon session 1. She is willing to drive up to 3 others who might want to join her. The event begins at 9 a.m. with worship. 5 th Sunday Brunch on Sunday, April 29 th! We will meet in Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School Hour starting at 9:30 a.m. Plan now on enjoying good food and fellowship! Our Confirmation Class completed its study of the Apostles Creed. Since then the students have had two sessions on the Bible. In April we ll have two classes on United Methodism and one class on Worship and Sacraments. So we re making good progress, and having some fun along on the way!

Youth Annual Conference is June 8-10 in Lakeside, Ohio. All youth who have completed grades 6-12 are invited to register. Early registration deadline is April 4. Registration closes May 24. If there are youth not in the confirmation class who would like to attend, please let Pastor Karen know as soon as possible. We will also need adult drivers and chaperones for the weekend. Please consider supporting our youth in this way. Copies of the 2018 Church Directory are available in the church office, on the landing by the office door, and on a table in the church narthex (entrance area). Our secretary will also print copies on request. Our Church Family Congratulations to NCUMC grandparents! Paul and Amy Hudson welcomed twin grandchildren, Quinn Adeline and Caxias Logan Bloxham, born March 8 in Grand Junction, Colorado. Rev. Craig and Nancy Redecker welcomed a new grandson, Spencer Allen Chase, born March 18 in Castle Rock, Colorado. I wish to thank everyone for their thoughts, their prayers, cards, well wishes, and food before and after surgery. God bless you all! Carol Martin Helping Others One of our church families Niki Reid Wolfe and her son Ben, experienced a devastating barn fire in March. Thirteen 4-H animals were lost plus the barn itself and all the equipment inside. Insurance won t cover everything. If you want to help, you may donate through the church we are setting up a restricted fund to hold donations. So you may simply make your check out to NCUMC, and write Barn Fund on the memo line. The church office can also receive cash donations. We will collect funds for at least one month.
