July 1, 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 Dear Friends, I published this in the special program for my Anniversary Mass last week and I offer it to all of you with profound gratitude. I was overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity I experienced last weekend! On this celebration of my Fortieth Anniversary of Priestly Ordination I am deeply grateful. First of all, I offer my unworthy thanks to Our Lord Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest who has had the mercy, forgiveness and patience to have called me and sustained me in His service all these many years. Secondly to His Blessed Mother, under whose patronage as Our Lady of Perpetual Help I was baptized and reared and in whose parish in Lindenhurst my vocation was born. It is for that reason that her image is on my remembrance card. I think of my dear parents who gave so much to me in ways beyond all repaying and for whom I pray every day. My sister shares in this day from her home and is in my heart every day. All the priests who have been good to me, my pastors, those who have helped me by their advice, friendship and kindness are on the Altar today with me, in my memory and in my heart. I am especially grateful to the late Bishop Gerald Ryan who ordained me, to the late Bishop James McHugh who made me a pastor first at St. James in Seaford, as well to our Bishop Emeritus William Murphy who assigned me to Saint Matthew s Parish and whose cheerful presence still graces our diocese. So many lay Faithful who have been companions, benefactors and examples of Faith and devotion in the parishes in which I have served these past forty years are also in my intentions this day. Last but not least, I am deeply grateful to the good people of Saint Matthew s Parish, the deacons, the parish staff, the various ministries, the Spanish and Traditional Latin Mass congregations and so many of you who have supported and helped me these past eight years as your pastor and whose loyalty to our Catholic Faith is second to none. Father Hewes Welcome! This weekend we welcome Father Benet, our new Associate Pastor, our old friend, Father Thomas, and Father Jacob from India. Father Thomas and Father Jacob will be with us for the month of July.

GAUDETE AND EXSULTATE REJOICE AND BE GLAD THE CALL TO HOLINESS Announced for the Third Time Salvatore Passeggiata and Amber Montemarano Blanca I. Flores and Isai Velasquez-Rivera July 1, 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 10 Even though it is 55 pages longs, it is worth reading Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete and Exsultate, Rejoice and Be Glad. You can find it on the Internet. In it he reflects on our response to God s call to Holiness in today s world. What is written below is taken from the Pope s Apostolic Exhortation. The best way to discern if our prayer is authentic is to judge to what extent our life is being transformed in the light of mercy. Mercy does not exclude justice and truth. We have to say that mercy is the fullness of justice and the most radiant manifestation of God s truth. It is the key to heaven. Here I think of Saint Thomas Aquinas, who asked which actions of ours are noblest, which external works best show our love for God. Thomas answered unhesitatingly that they are the works of mercy towards our neighbor, even more than acts of worship. Those who really wish to give glory to God by their lives are called to be single-minded and tenacious in their practice of works of mercy. Saint Teresa of Calcutta clearly realized this: Yes, I have many human faults and failures. But God bends down and uses us, you and me to be his love and his compassion in the world. He depends on us to love the world and to show how much he loves it. If we are too concerned with ourselves, we will have no time left for others. Let us pray for one another that we can do many acts of mercy. May you and your families have a wonderful summer. Sister Kay McCarthy RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPIRITUALLY ADOPTED BABY! Your spiritually adopted baby is born this month - - nine months after his/her mother conceived him/her. The only change at birth is a change in the external life support system of the baby. He/ she is no different now than he/she was before birth except that he breathes and eats differently. He/she is truly a miracle. He/she began as a 46- chromosome cell and has developed over the past nine months into this unique human baby. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is just like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers saved his/her life. Thank you on behalf of all of the little babies that you cared enough to pray for him/her and his/her mother. July 1 - Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In today s Gospel we see how in faith, Jarius asked Jesus to heal his daughter and how Jesus then answered his prayer. In prayer we also come to know that we are loved by God, and in that trust we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones and all those who are suffering. Through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought the love and healing of Jesus to our suffering neighbors.
