Switzler contain news clippings, photographs, and correspondence on the Civil War, Boone County, Missouri history, and national events; poetry; anecdotes; and family announcements. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Mrs. Hartley G. Banks on 31 August 1971 (Accession No. 3882). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Lewis M. Switzler was born near New Franklin, Howard County, Missouri, 20 June 1841. The son of Simeon and Elizabeth Cornelius Switzler, Lewis was educated in the Howard County public schools, attended Mt. Pleasant College at Huntsville, and then entered the University of Missouri in 1860. In 1864 he was employed by Boyle and Wellington Gordon Law Office and later admitted to the bar. In 1872 Lewis entered the senior law class at the University of Missouri and graduated the next year. Switzler's career included several years as assistant editor of the Missouri Statesman, edited by his brother William F. Switzler. Lewis was also Columbia city attorney and police judge. In 1892 Governor David R. Francis appointed Lewis probate judge in Boone County when Judge Garth resigned. Switzler was reelected to this position in 1894 and 1898. Lewis M. Switzler married Nellie Barrett (1863-1925) on 30 August 1893. She was born near Woodlandville, Boone County, Missouri. Lewis Switzler died in Columbia on 6 November 1925.
