THE VINE STREET VISITOR Vine Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) June 2018 Telephone: 217/543-2292; Email: vscc@mchsi.com 2018, No. 6 THE DEEPEST DESIRE OF YOUR HEART Each one of us has a hole inside of us that longs to be filled. It s an emptiness that nothing in the world can fully satisfy, and yet we spend day after day seeking things of the world to fill it. Every day we realize a little more that we are still unsatisfied knowing in our hearts that there must be something more in this life that can fill this hole this emptiness. And over time, filling this hole becomes the deepest desire of our hearts. You are not alone! We all having a very deep desire for "something more" in this life of ours. Whether we acknowledge having this desire or not... and whether we know it or not... having a close personal transformational relationship with God is that deepest desire. And... Jesus is the person who offers us that relationship.
Most of us spend our life searching for the next best alternative to Jesus -- because most of us -- really deep down -- do not believe that Jesus can fulfill our deepest desires. We keep wanting to look outside of ourselves for the answer(s)... for something or someone that offers a quick fix or instant gratification for the "suffering" we are in. But the truth is that Jesus is not outside of us -- he is within us. And to truly find this amazing gift that God has given us -- and thus to acquire that transformational relationship we all need -- we must take the radical and uncomfortable step of "going in" -- not "looking out." This is confusing to many of us because looking out does bring us some relief Temporary as it is, it does seem to work! But only for a while. And then we're back on the treadmill, seeking the next best thing. And it's always there! But we do not have to live on that treadmill! Turning our search inward - to Jesus -- does not offer a quick fix nor instant gratification. But it does offer the answer to our deepest desire -- and it does lead us to a new way of life. This Sunday and continuing every Sunday through July we will be exploring together this search for the answer within. The sermon series that I am starting this Sunday is called: Practicing the Spiritual Disciplines, because it is only by making changes in the way we relate to God and commune with Jesus that we will ever discover the answer to fill that hole that emptiness that is the deepest desire of our hearts. I will be using the book, Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices That Transform Us, as our reference book and guide throughout the series. I strongly encourage you to use the book for your own journey through this sermon series and into your own spiritual life.

Dr. Heidi Grooms has asked that no one park in the lot on any other days of the week, which includes Wednesday evenings. The parking lot is reserved for the patrons of the vet clinic. In addition, cars should only be parked in the marked spaces facing the clinic and not facing Park Street which blocks other cars.
