TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST The Cost of Discipleship August 30 & 31, 2014 AS WE GATHER Jesus invites anyone who would come after Him to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. This invitation is at once as simple as justification by grace alone through faith alone for Christ s sake alone and as all-of-life-encompassing as is comprehended in that theological declaration. The life of following Jesus includes genuine love and service both to the Lord and to other people even when those people may be considered enemies. As the prophet Jeremiah discovered, God s message to His human creatures may be an unpopular one, yet Jesus promises that anyone who loses their life for His sake will find it. WELCOME Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. (Ephesians 2:19-20) HANDSHAKES & HUGS + PREPARATION + OPENING HYMN #905 Come, Thou Almighty King Please rise for the singing of the last stanza Come, Thou Almighty King, Help us Thy name to sing; Help us to praise; Father all glorious, O er all victorious, Come and reign over, Ancient of Days. Come, Thou incarnate Word, Gird on Thy mighty sword; Our prayer attend. Come and Thy people bless, And give Thy Word success, And let Thy righteousness On us descend. Come, holy Comforter. Thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour! Thou, who almighty art, Now rule in ev ry heart, And ne er from us depart, Spirit of pow r. To Thee, great One in Three, Eternal praises be Hence evermore! Thy sov reign majesty May we in glory see, And to eternity Love adore. INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCES O LORD, I love the habitation of your house People: and the place where your glory dwells. My foot stands on level ground; People: in the great assembly I will bless the LORD. Your words were found, and I ate them, People: and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, People: O LORD, God of hosts. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Father of mercy and grace, People: Even though I deserve nothing but death because of my sins, I ask you not to sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men, in whose hands are evil devices. Your steadfast love in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is displayed before my eyes. Lord, I believe, and I ask that you would forgive me for Christ s sake, granting me the help of your Spirit, for I desire to walk in your faithfulness. Thus says the LORD: If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before Me. Therefore, in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE "Gloria in Excelsis" Page 187-189 Glory be to God on high, People: and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee. We glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For

Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, your Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our redemption. Grant us courage to take up our cross daily and follow Him wherever He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. + WORD + OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 15:15 21 You understand, O Lord; remember me and care for me. Avenge me on my persecutors. You are long-suffering - do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake. When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty. I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable? Will you be to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails? Therefore this is what the Lord says: "If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them. I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you," declares the Lord. "I will save you from the hands of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the cruel." EPISTLE Romans 12:9 21 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 16:21 28 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "this shall never happen to you!" Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #688 "Come, Follow Me,' the Savior Spake" Come, follow Me, the Savior spake, All in My way abiding; Deny yourselves, the world forsake, Obey My call and guiding. O bear the cross, whate er betide, Take My example for your guide. I am the light, I light the way. A godly life displaying; I bid you walk as in the day; I keep your feet from straying. I am the way, and well I show How you must sojourn here below. My heart abounds in lowliness, My soul with love is glowing; And gracious words my lips express, With meekness overflowing. My heart, My mind, My strength, My all, To God I yield, on Him I call. I teach you how to shun and flee What harms your soul s salvation, Your heart from ev ry guide to free, From sin and its temptation. I am the refuge of the soul And lead you to your heav nly goal. Then let us follow Christ, our Lord, And take the cross appointed And, firmly clinging to His Word, In suff ring be undaunted. For those who bear the battle s strain The crown of heav nly life obtain.

SERMON "What Stands Between Christ and His Cross?" Matthew 16:21-28 APOSTLES CREED (found on the inside back cover of the hymnal) OFFERINGS As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. You may check the register for names of those to greet after the worship service. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH O Lord, you have promised to hear and answer the prayers of your people. With confidence in your Word, we come before your throne of grace. Almighty God, it was necessary for your only Son to die on the cross for our salvation. People: As redeemed people, grant us to take up our cross and follow Jesus all our days. Grant your blessing to the earth, O Lord, that it may be fruitful and supply the needs of all people. People: Deliver us from drought and famine and bring forth a rich harvest to satisfy the hungry with the good things of your mercy. Father in heaven, you are the creator of family and you desire us to live in our families in accordance with your will. People: Bless us by your holy Word to grow together as family, learning to live daily to love and cherish one another as your children. Deliver us from our enemies and from all evils that may befall the body or afflict the soul. People: Teach us to love you above all things and to love our neighbors as ourselves, so that we may display your goodness to the world and glorify your holy name by our words and our deeds. Give us patience in tribulation and restore to us the joy of your salvation. Comfort the weeping with your loving kindness and console the grieving with the hope of the resurrection. Bless especially the Wollerman family as they remember Russ on his birthday and celebrate their anniversary. People: Help us to live in harmony with one another even as we welcome the stranger with love, grace, and hospitality. Bless your Church with your Spirit and His gifts, that your people may raise up Christ and His cross before the world. People: Bless all pastors and church workers and their service to us in your name. Grant us all to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, that when our Lord comes in His glory we may be found faithful. Deliver the world from the voices of anger, dispute and hate that instigate violence and threaten the safety of people in their homes, schools and workplaces. People: Give your blessing to those who lead us in this land and to all the nations and peoples of the world, that justice, freedom and respect may be multiplied. Lead us to repentance and faith, that we may not think more highly of ourselves than is right and that we would set our hearts and minds on the things of God. People: Prepare us to receive for our good and with faith the blessed gifts of our Lord s Table, that this food may nourish us to faithfulness in this life and keep us holy and blameless in Christ when He comes again. Hear us for the sake of all those who cry to you in their need. Heal the sick, relieve the suffering, comfort the mourning and guide the dying to peace in Christ especially your servants Jean, Gretchen, Janine, Ray, Heidi, Frank, Jim, Marion, Nancy, Gilberte, Jack, Mark, Richard, Virginia, Rosalie, Dorothy and Sarah. People: Restore those wounded in body or soul with your abundant grace, and according to your will deliver them from all their troubles. All these things and whatever else is needful for body and soul we pray you to grant us in the name of and for the sake of our Lord, Jesus Christ. To him be glory with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

THE LORD S PRAYER WORDS OF OUR LORD + SACRAMENT + THE PEACE OF THE LORD The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI "Lamb of God" Page 198 O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen. DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. HYMN #425 "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God; all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See, from His head, His hands, His feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a tribute far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all! HYMN #642 "O Living Bread from Heaven" O living Bread from heaven, How well you feed your guest! The gifts that you have given Have filled my heart with rest. Oh, wondrous food of blessing, Oh, cup that heals our woes! My heart, this gift possessing, With praises overflows. My Lord, you here have led me To this most holy place And with yourself have fed me The treasures of your grace; For you have freely given What earth could never buy, The bread of life from heaven, That now I shall not die. You gave me all I wanted; This food can death destroy. And you have freely granted The cup of endless joy. My Lord, I do not merit The favor you have shown, And all my soul and spirit Bow down before your throne. Lord, grant me then, thus strengthened With heav nly food, while here My course on earth is lengthened, To serve with holy fear. And when you call my spirit To leave this world below, I enter, through your merit, Where joys unmingled flow. HYMN #636 "Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness" Soul, adorn yourself with gladness, Leave the gloomy haunts of sadness, Come into the daylight s splendor, There with joy your praises render. Bless the One whose grace unbounded This amazing banquet founded; He, though heav nly, high, and holy, Deigns to dwell with you most lowly. Hasten as a bride to meet Him, And with loving rev rence greet Him. For with words of life immortal He is knocking at your portal. Open wide the gates before Him, Saying, as you there adore Him: Grant, Lord, that I now receive You, That I nevermore will leave You. He who craves a precious treasure Neither cost nor pain will measure; But the priceless gifts of heaven God to us has freely given. Though the wealth of earth were proffered, None could buy the gifts here offered: Christ s true body, for you riven, And His blood, for you once given. Now in faith I humbly ponder Over this surpassing wonder That the bread of life is boundless Though the souls it feeds are countless: With the choicest wine of heaven Christ s own blood to us is given. Oh, most glorious consolation, pledge and seal of my salvation! Jesus, source of lasting pleasure, Truest friend, and dearest treasure, Peace beyond all understanding, Joy into all life expanding:

Humbly now, I bow before You; Love incarnate, I adore You Worthily let me receive You And, so forward, never leave You. Jesus, sun of life, my splendor, Jesus, friend of friends, most tender, Jesus, joy of my desiring, Fount of life, my soul inspiring: At Your feet I cry, my maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessed food from heaven, For our good, Your glory, given. Lord, by love and mercy driven, You once left Your throne in heaven On the cross for me to languish And to die in bitter anguish, To forego all joy and gladness And to shed Your blood in sadness. By this blood redeemed and living, Lord, I praise You with thanksgiving. Jesus, bread of life, I pray You, Let me gladly here obey You. By Your love I am invited, Be Your love with love requited; By this Supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love s treasure. Through the gift of grace You give me As Your guest in heav n receive me. Take my life and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee; Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of Thy love; Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee. Take my voice and let me sing Always, only for my King; Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from Thee. Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I withhold; Take my intellect and use Ev ry pow r as Thou shalt choose. Take my will and make it Thine, It shall be no longer mine; Take my heart, it is Thine own, It shall be Thy royal throne. Take my love, my Lord, I pour At Thy feet its treasure store; Take myself, and I will be Ever, only, all for Thee. COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in lovingkindness sent your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank you that for His sake you have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask you not to forsake your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve you; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The LORD lift up His countenance upon you and + give you peace.
