For forty hours the Blessed Sacrament is exposed outside of the tabernacle and continuously adored. This is a time when you can come in, day or night, and pray in silence. It s a wonderful opportunity for us to gain spiritual growth by pushing away temptation and evil and praying for reparation of all that is dark in our world, especially the reparation of the scandal hurting our Church today. If you are new to Eucharistic adoration, here is an easy way to start. When you arrive, you can do a double genuflection as you face the Blessed Sacrament. You will see many people go down on both knees as they do the Sign of the Cross. Then you can kneel or sit and pray a rosary or do some spiritual reading you d like to spend time meditating on. There is a nice booklet by Linda Schubert called the Miracle Hour, and it is a great guide for prayer. You can see the image below that walks you through the hour. Another way to spend the hour is to think of certain things you d like to pray for. Are you or someone that you know needing prayers for an illness? Is there someone in the military you d like to pray for? Are you or someone close to you struggling with an issue that you d like to bring to prayer? Do you need to just be close to Jesus in silence? Bring your fears, hopes, and prayers to our Lord. Amen? Amen! STEWARDSHIP OF FINANCE Collections for the week ending Aug. 19 St. Anthony $6,620.10 St. Cecilia $10,801.00 St. margaret-st. pa s t o r s r a m b l i n g s 4 2 3 4 Visiting Bishop: Bishop Gabriel Malzaire of the diocese of Roseau, Dominica, was the guest of our Masses at St. Anthony Church on Aug. 19 (photo 1). He spoke of the devastation that Dominica is experiencing in the aftermath of the hurricane. All who attended his Masses found him to be a congenial man and an excellent bishop. 1 Eagle Scout: Alex Krietemeyer, son of longtime parishioners and an alumnus of St. Cecilia, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in his Boy Scout Troop. It was a very proud day for Alex and his family (photo 2). 1 Meet the Teachers: On Aug. 19, school parents and parishioners were able to visit the school at St. Cecilia to meet the teachers and see the classrooms (photo 3). I was impressed by how welcoming all of the classrooms looked and glad to see the teachers in good spirits. 1 Wedding: Congratulations to sacristan Deb Garvey and family (photo 4). Her son, Sam, and his new bride, Hannah, were married a couple weeks ago in Deb and Mark s hometown of Evansville, Indiana. 1 Welcome, Children of God: On Aug. 12, Madeleine Immaculata, daughter of Elizabeth and Nicholas Jobe (photo 5), was baptized by Fr. Steve Beseau at St. Cecilia. Three girls were baptized at St. Cecilia on Aug. 19. Welcome to Annabelle Ruth, daughter of Eric and Kate Malo (photo 6); Catalina Mae, daughter of Zachery and Andrea Philpot (photo 7); and Anna Louise, daughter of Matt and Sarah Crawford (photo 8). 7 8

Because Kairos has been shown to benefit the inmates and the peace and security of prisons, Kairos has been welcomed in most Ohio state prisons. A Kairos weekend program, based on Catholic Cursillo, will start on September 27 at the maximum security prison at Lucasville. During this weekend each inmate and prison staff will get two dozen volunteer-baked, prayed-over cookies. This comes to about 3,500 dozen cookies. Please bake cookies for Kairos! On September 8 and 9, at all the Masses in our region, plastic bags will be provided along with instructions for packing the cookies to satisfy prison security requirements. Cookies will be collected after Masses on September 15 and 16. For information on Kairos volunteer opportunities please contact credenda@fuse.net. E a s t s i d e Fa i t h 6 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:17 A Summer with the Saints Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880-1906) St. Elizabeth of the Trinity was a French Discalced Carmelite professed religious in addition to being a mystic and a spiritual writer. She was known for the depth of her spiritual growth as a Carmelite as well as bleak periods in which her religious calling was perceived to be unsure according to those around her; she however was acknowledged for her persistence in pursuing the will of God and in devoting herself to the charism of the Carmelites. Elizabeth was a gifted pianist and harbored strong feelings for the Carmelite charism where she found all that she desired. Her most famous prayer is: Holy Trinity Whom I Adore and she wrote this out of her love of the Most Blessed Trinity. Elizabeth of the Trinity is a patron against illness, of sick people, and of the loss of parents. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. The Mass will help you understand how to fully participate in the source and summit of the Christian life. Contact Cody Egner, cegner@eastsideregion.org, for more information. The opening service will be at 1:30 PM Mass on Friday, Sept. 7, followed by continuous adoration until the closing ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the end of the 10 AM Mass. A brunch will then be held in the school cafeteria. We are still in need of guardian worshippers willing to commit to half-an-hour (or more), especially in the late night and early morning time slots throughout the weekend. Sign-up sheets are located at both side doors and in the back vestibule of the church. Questions? Contact Jeff Icsman at 513-321-3089 or icsmanj@gmail.com. focus on Justice 7 The economic system that has the god of money at its center, and that sometimes acts with the brutality of the robbers in the parable, inflicts injuries that to a criminal degree have remained neglected. Globalized society frequently looks the other way with the pretence of innocence. Under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside. This hypocritical attitude, so different from that of the Samaritan, manifests an absence of true commitment to humanity. Message of His Holiness Pope Francis to the World Meeting of Popular Movements, February 2017 Together in Christ Register by Monday! If you are looking for an opportunity for thoughtful, civil discussion on issues that matter, be sure to register for Together in Christ, which takes place Saturday, September 8, from 9 AM until noon at Nativity. As we hear stories from members of Project Rachel, Citizens United for Action, the HELP Program, and other organizations in this area, participants will see faces rather than issues and will also realize how interconnected all issues are. To register, call Catholic Social Action at (513) 421-3131, ext. 2660, or csa@ catholiccincinnati.org. Big Hunger On September 6, from 5:30 to 9 PM at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University, Catholic Charities and other local leaders will address poverty with author Andrew Fisher s book presentation. Fisher argues that many antihunger advocates miss an essential element of the problem: economic inequality driven by low wages. For more information, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/big-hungersolving-poverty-to-solve-hunger-tickets-43344266869?aff=e bdssbdestsearch. Or call 513-672-3702. Can We Bridge the Divide? Better Angels Red/Blue Workshop The Archdiocese of Cincinnati, along with Better Angels (a nonpartisan organization uniting red and blue Americans in a working alliance to depolarize America), is offering a workshop to bring together a select number of conservative or Republican-leaning citizens and liberal or Democraticleaning citizens for a day of structured conversations rooted in our Catholic faith. This event will take place at Incarnation Church, 7415 Far Hills Rd., Centerville OH 45459. The process for this conversation will focus on listening and reflecting rather than debating and persuading. If you are interested in participating or learning more, contact the Catholic Social Action Office, 513-241-3131, ext. 2660, or email csa@catholiccincinnati.org. RSVP by September 14. This event is limited to 42 participants. Farm Bill The Farm Bill is an important bill that encompasses many food issues for farmers and those facing food instability nationally and internationally. The Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Social Action has had a few events around the Archdiocese to talk about the Farm Bill and how to take action. We are at the home stretch and more action is needed. Conferences from both the House and Senate will now get together to work out differences between the Senate- and House-passed bills. The Conference Committee will begin its work in the coming weeks with the hopes of passing a bill through both chambers before September 30. Once the bill is finalized by the committee, it will have to be voted on again by both the full House and Senate before it can be signed into law by the President. This is an important time to give the members of Congress that represent you a call about the Farm Bill. To learn more about the Farm Bill and advocacy, go to www. catholiccharitiesusa.org/advocacy/. Also, please consider signing this letter to your representatives from CRS https://support.crs.org/act/ nourish-change-0. St. Anthony Peace & Justice Committee The monthly meeting of the committee will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 PM in the St. Anthony Parish Center. All are welcome. If you have any questions, contact the parish office at St. Anthony. Madisonville Habitat House The 2018 Habitat for Humanity build site in Madisonville is right around the corner from St. Anthony Church. The Madisonville Coalition is a group of about 10 churches that rotate working on Saturdays. There is also a Wednesday Crew, with varying levels of construction skills. Anyone who is free on Wednesdays and interested in participating is welcome to join them. St Anthony parishioners Mark McCarthy and Joe Scheid have been volunteering and would be happy to tell you more about the project.
