The Seasons of a Dream: 1. Birth of a Dream pg. 2 2. Watering the Dream Seed pg. 5 3. Death of a Dream pg. 8 4. In the Meantime pg. 12 5. When Dreams Come True pg. 15 For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, NLT 1 P a g e

Season One: The Birth of a Dream Signs of birth: A new idea has been planted in your heart (often during a time of prayer or a moment in silence with God) that you just can t shake. The same thing keeps crossing your path again and again. The books you read, the conversations you have, the sermons you hear they all resonate with a similar theme, and every time you encounter it, your heart swells. When you think about or engage in this one thing, your heart beats faster you feel fully alive. You get excited about something God is speaking to you and you run to tell people in your life and they don t really understand. You face opposition in this very area and have to make decisions to stand fast in it or to give it up. Encouragement and Advice: Get excited and take this new dream to God in prayer every day. Be careful who you talk to. Sometimes God wants this to stay between you and Him until He s had the time to mature you into the place where you can really, fully embrace the 2 P a g e

dream. If you do talk to someone about your new dream, make sure it s someone who s safe, who can be trusted to carry this dream with you in their heart (see Genesis scripture below). Get to know Jesus more than ever. This process is just beginning, and while this dream is from God, it doesn t mean it s going to bloom quickly. So dig into Christ. Know Him deeply and run after His heart. Scriptures: Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. Listen, I have had another dream, he said. The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me! This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. What kind of dream is that? he asked. Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you? But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant. Genesis 37:9-11, NLT May he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen. Hebrews 13:21, NLT 3 P a g e

The Lord says, I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8, NLT In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with selfcontrol, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 2 Peter 1:5-7, NLT But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33, ESV 4 P a g e

Season Two: Watering the Dream Seed Signs of Watering: The dream has been in your heart for a while. You may have lost some of your passion for it because, while it s still there in your heart, you don t see a lot happening with it right now. You may be feeling tempted to believe that the dream was just a whim, not something planted in you by God. Right in a moment when you are forgetting about your dream, God suddenly reminds you of it through an experience, a song, a word from a friend, or a scripture (HE is the one who does the watering!). You re being built up in a skill (or working in a job) that looks unrelated to your dream but that is actually crucial training for the dream. There s an aspect of the dream you want to chase after now, but roadblocks keep getting put up. This is testing your willingness to be patient and to learn what you need to learn in this season. You have the opportunity to serve someone possibly even someone who is living out your dream. You get to equip them and serve them as they do what they are called to do. 5 P a g e

Encouragement and Advice: If you don t have someone to serve find someone. Dreamers are molded in seasons of service. You cannot fulfill your dream if you are not willing to serve. Keep diving into your relationship with Jesus. Let Him water your dream seed and encourage you in this season, reminding you of that dream He planted in your heart. Whatever you have to do right now, do it with excellence. Don t disdain where you are and don t do half-hearted work. Be willing to learn as much as you can in the job, class, or responsibility you have right now even if it seems so outside of the box of your dream. God is bigger than your box. You need these skills. Also, God is looking for humble hearts that are willing to do what s in front of them with excellence and integrity. You can t expect to just attain these attributes when you re doing what you feel like you re called to do. You have to cultivate them in the seasons of preparation. Don t refuse to do something that you think is beneath you or beneath your calling. Be the first one to raise your hand. Have a humble, willing heart. 6 P a g e

Scriptures: The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. Genesis 39:2-3, NLT God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. Hebrews 6:10, NLT When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. John 13:12-16, ESV But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. 2 Peter 3:8-9a, NLT 7 P a g e

Season Three: Death of a Dream Signs of Death: Something unexpected has happened which has stripped you of all hope of seeing your dream come true a betrayal, loss of a loved one, illness, etc. You took a step toward your dream that you thought was it only to see it ripped out from under your feet, or You took a step toward your dream that you thought was it only to discover that it wasn t. You feel hopeless and broken, and even thinking about your dream causes you grief and pain. You ve entered the dark night of the soul (see my blog post about this at https://www.gabiruth.com/blog/2017/9/6/ hes-in-the-darkness-enduring-the-dark-nightof-the-soul). Symptoms: You can no longer access the presence of God, you sense futility in everything you do, and you re more aware of your weakness and sin than you ever have been before. You cannot see any way that your dream could come back to life. 8 P a g e

Encouragement and Advice: Nothing takes God by surprise. If you are surprised and grieved by the sudden death of your dream, take comfort in the promises of God in scripture. Don t let anything make you think that He has forgotten you He never forgets you. Let God hold you in your pain. He is near to the brokenhearted.* Allow yourself to grieve. We must grieve all deaths in our lives including the death of a dream. If we do not grieve properly, we do not heal properly, and that lack of healing will handicap us from what God wants to do through us in the future. Learn the art of lament. Like a Psalmist, lift your voice to God and ask the hard questions. Walk through the lamenting Psalms of David and see that you are not alone in all that you are feeling and God is not afraid to hear these heart-cries and questions. Keep living, keep serving, keep doing what is right in front of you, even if you feel like you can t breathe. This is where strength is born. This is where faith is purified. This suffering is not for nothing, dear friend. Don t give up hope. 9 P a g e

If you find yourself in the Dark Night of the Soul (see blog post mentioned above), fully enter into it. Allow yourself to learn the lessons being taught there. This will be one of the hardest things you will ever do, but through it will come the greatest refinement and reward of your life. When it is over, I promise that you will know Jesus better than ever and you will sense His nearness more sweetly than ever, too. Don t isolate yourself. Be honest with trustworthy people in your life and let them help carry you through this death. Remember before there can be a resurrection, there has to be a death. It could be that your story is not ending it could be that it s just beginning. Scriptures: When Joseph s brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him. Here comes the dreamer! they said. Come on, let s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. We can tell our father, A wild animal has eaten him. Then we ll see what becomes of his dreams! Genesis 37:18-20, NLT *The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. Psalm 34:18, NLT 10 P a g e

Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long? Turn, O LORD, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love. No one remembers you when he is dead. Who praises you from the grave? I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes. Away from me, all you who do evil, for the LORD has heard my weeping. The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. Psalm 6:2-9, NIV God, my God, come and save me! These floods of trouble have risen higher and higher. The water is up to my neck! I m sinking into the mud with no place to stand, and I m about to drown in this storm. I m weary, exhausted with weeping. My throat is dry, my voice is gone, my eyes are swollen with sorrow, and I m waiting for you, God, to come through for me. Psalm 69:1-3, TPT When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. Isaiah 43:2, NLT 11 P a g e

Season Four: In the Meantime Signs of the Meantime You re settling into your new normal after a season of loss or transition (usually unexpected transition). Even though you re not where you want to be, you are starting to sense God s grace again and to see His love even in this unexpected place. You have the opportunity to grow as a servant leader in this unexpected place, maturing in integrity and leadership skills. You see the people around you with increased compassion and are much less self-focused then before. You re able to get outside of yourself and your own pain and see the pain and need of those around you. You have a desire to help people in need, expecting nothing in return. You re coming to peace with the thought that maybe your dream will never come to pass. Your relationship with God is deep and steady. It is not directed by emotional highs and lows, but rather by a deep understanding of His nature. This is enough for you. You desire to please God in everything you do, even in the seemingly insignificant things. 12 P a g e

You feel surrendered to whatever happens next. Encouragement and Advice: Be encouraged you re becoming mature and complete, lacking nothing. * Stay connected to your local church and a community. The outworking of what God molded in you through your season of suffering will be manifested there. Keep serving, loving, and giving in graciousness and humility. Let your heart break open in compassion toward other people. Allow yourself to take part in their pain. This can be scary, especially after your own heart has endured so much. But this compassion is the very fragrance of Christ being poured out from your beautiful brokenness. Understand that the lives you are touching in this season could very well be catalysts of change in your future (the cupbearer told Pharaoh about Joseph!). Don t despise the small things (or small relationships). Rejoice in the humility realized in the presence of a mighty King. Serve with excellence and commitment right where you are. Don t slack or cut corners. 13 P a g e

Scriptures: But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. Genesis 39:21a * Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:4, NIV And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners in the prison. The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed. Genesis 39:21b-23, NLT I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word. Psalm 130:5, NLT And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. Isaiah 58:11, ESV Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Colossians 3:12, ESV Share each other s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2, NLT 14 P a g e

Season Five: When Dreams Come True Signs of a Dream Come True You have learned to be content in Christ no matter what your situation is, and a development ushering you into your dream has taken you by surprise. You realize that all of the things you had to learn through patience, pain, trial, sacrifice, and suffering have actually equipped you to step into the dream-come-true that you are experiencing now. You have a tempered enthusiasm about the dream, because you realize the gravity of it. You have a new understanding of how much bigger than you this dream is, and that you absolutely cannot move forward in it without the daily, hourly grace of God. You by no means intend to take this next step in your own strength. You have a mature understanding of the futility of this. Your foundation is ready and firmly built for such a time as this because you did not opt out or cut corners in the seasons leading up to the now. You have a deep awareness that your dreamcome-true is actually just the beginning, and that this answered prayer is actually ushering you into so much more than you expected again 15 P a g e

bringing you to your knees both in gratitude toward God and humble dependency upon Him. The dream-come-true has come by a miracle. You are thinking to yourself, Only God could have done this. I did not do this. Encouragement and Advice: Stay humble. As you get deeper into this season, the temptation will arise to pat yourself on your back. Don t. Remember how you got here, remember the miracles, and stay in a position of humble gratitude before God. Bring other people with you. Remember where you have come from and find someone to mentor who is a few steps behind you in this race. You know how hard the journey is. You know you never wanted to walk it alone. Be the not-alone for someone else. Keep serving. Always serve. Jesus was the greatest of all and yet He continually served by giving His time, His healing, His personal space, His position, even His very life. You are not greater than Jesus. Keep serving. Rejoice and give thanks. Don t stop moving forward remember, this is really just the beginning, and this thing God has entrusted you with? You don t know the half of it He s got so much more in mind. It will be hard. You will want to give up again. 16 P a g e

But you gave Him your life so let Him use it as fully as He desires. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Keep dreaming. Always. Further up and further in! Scriptures: Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God? Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, Since God has revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or wise as you are. You will be in charge of my court, and all my people will take orders from you. Only I, sitting on my throne, will have a rank higher than yours. Pharaoh said to Joseph, I hereby put you in charge of the entire land of Egypt. Genesis 41:38b-41, NLT I know what I m doing. I have it all planned out plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. Jeremiah 29:11, MSG But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8, NLT 17 P a g e

If you live wide-eyed in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. Keep your eyes open, your lamp burning, so you don t get musty and murky. Keep your life as well-lighted as your bestlighted room. Luke 11:34-36, MSG And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as temporary residents. For you know that god paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless, Lamb of God. 1 Peter 1:17-19, NLT My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, says the Lord. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Isaiah 53:8-9, NLT I run with passion into his abundance so that I may reach the purpose that Jesus Christ has called me to fulfill and wants me to discover. I don't depend on my own strength to accomplish this; however I do have one compelling focus: I forget all of the past as I fasten my heart to the future instead. Philippians 3: 12b-13, TPT Before we were even born, he gave us our destiny; that we would fulfill the plan of God who always accomplishes every 18 P a g e

purpose and plan in his heart. Ephesians 1:11b, The Passion Translation Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God s work from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11, NLT A NOTE FROM GABI RUTH: Friends, I hope this resource has encouraged and strengthened you!
