JOHN 9 & 10: JESUS, THE GOOD SHEPHERD I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep -John 10:11(NIV) DAY ONE: GETTING STARTED (CHAPTER 9) Before you start, take a moment to pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal truth and wisdom to you as you read the word of God. Take time to confess any sin that may need repentance and receive the grace the Lord has for you. Read John 9:1-41 today. Record any key verses or phrases that stood out to you and why. (Read it several times using different translations and/or listen to an audio version if possible.) DAY TWO: THE BLIND CAN SEE Read John 9:1-15 today. 1. What reason did Jesus give for the man s blindness (vs. 3)? 2. Can you think of an example in your own life when God was glorified through suffering? Page 56

3. Read Matthew 5:14. Jesus says His people are the lights of the world. How does that fit in with verse 4 where Jesus uses the word we? Do you feel a sense of responsibility to Jesus? 4. What did Jesus say should be done, according to verse 4, and what does this mean? 5. How did the neighbors and others react to the blind man s miracle (vs. 8-12)? 6. What was the blind man s simple testimony (vs. 15)? Write out a simple, one sentence testimony of what the Lord has done in your life that you can share with anyone who asks. 7. According to verse 1, this man was born blind and knew no different. His eyes were made new and he was finally able to see all the things and people around him for the first time! How do you think the man felt after this experience? Page 57

DAY THREE: SEEING THINGS CLEARLY Read John 9:16-41 today. 8. Like the Samaritan woman in Chapter 4, the blind man also went through several stages of understanding who Jesus was. What was the progression for him? (vs. 11, 17, 33, 38) 9. What was the question that came up and divided them all (vs. 16)? 10. While the man was increasingly able to clearly see Jesus, what was true of the Pharisees according to evidence in this story (vs. 40)? 11. The Pharisees had spiritual blind spots. Can you think of blind spots from your past that have received sight? How might you let Jesus illuminate current areas of blindness? 12. The man stood up to the religious leaders and the consequence according to verse 34, was that they threw him out of the synagogue (excommunicated him). What stand did the man make against them, according to verses 24-34? 13. As you review John Chapter 9, what have you studied this week that has made an impact on your life or encouraged spiritual growth? Page 58

DAY FOUR: GETTING STARTED (CHAPTER 10) Read John 10:1-42 today. (Read it several times using different translations and/or listen to an audio version if possible.) 14. Record any key verses or phrases that stood out to you and why. DAY FIVE: THE GOOD SHEPHERD Read John 10:1-21 today. 15. According to our passage today, list some of the qualities of the good shepherd. 16. Read verses 1-10 and describe how Jesus is like a gate into the sheepfold. 17. How is the gate different from thieves and robbers (vs. 7-10)? Who would Jesus call thieves today? Why? 18. Jesus makes another I am statement in verse 14. What is it? How is He like a shepherd? What statement does it make about His commitment to the sheep (vs. 11, 14-18)? Page 59

19. Has Jesus been a good shepherd to you? If so, how? 20. How can you follow your good shepherd closer this week? DAY SIX: THE SHEEP Read John 10:22-42 today. 21. As a sheep, who are some people that you have followed in the past? How does this encourage or convict you? 22. According to John 10, what are some characteristics of sheep? 23. When looking at John 10, what do you think each of the following represents? 1. the sheep: 2. the shepherd: 3. the sheep pen: 4. the stranger: 5. the watchman: 6. the gate: 24. Jesus was confronted by the people in the Temple in verse 24. Jesus responded by talking about His sheep. What was the relationship described by Jesus (vs. 25-30)? 25. What promise does Jesus give His sheep in verses 28-29? What does Deuteronomy 31:6 add? Page 60
