Psalm 91:14-16 Introduction Why is that people worry about what they d have to give up if they are to get saved. They don t take time to think about all that they have to look forward to once they are saved. As Christians we know that the benefits of salvation far outweigh the lifestyle of the lost. This passage of Scripture shows us a few of those benefits. I. God Will Doubly Deliver Us. 14 Because he loves me, says the LORD, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. (Psalms 91:14-15, NIV) A. He will deliver us while we are alive. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (2 Tim 4:18, NIV) 1. He will deliver us out of the darkness into the light.
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (John 8:12, NIV) 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. (1 John 2:8, NIV) 2. As believers we know where we have been, what our purpose in life is, and where we are going to spend eternity. 3. Walking in the light is walking in the confidence and assurance of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. B. He will deliver us in dying. 24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. (John 5:24, NIV) 1. From Hell. 6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. (REV 20:6, NIV) 2. The lost don t have this assurance.
3. As a matter of fact, they have the assurance of hell. II. God Will Be With Us In Trouble. 15... I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. (Psalms 91:15, NIV) 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (Psalms 46:1, NIV) A. God does not always want to change our circumstances. 1. We would want our circumstances to change first. 2. However, God often uses difficult times to bring about His will. 3. Consider the situation of Joseph. B. Sometimes God wants to mold our character. 1. He shapes us and makes us into what He wants us to be as we yield to His skillful hands. 2. Like the potter and the clay. 3. Like the trimmer of the vine. cf Jn. 15:1-2 C. Psalm 23 is often used for funerals, but it is for us living folks as well.
1. Job said, Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. (Job 13:5) 2. Paul learned that all he needed was the grace of God. My grace is sufficient for you... (2 Cor 12:9) 3. Paul said, God, I could do more without this thorn in the flesh, but I ll gladly glory in this if that s what it takes to be close to you. III. God Will Answer Our Prayers. 15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; (Psalms 91:15a) A. By promise. 3 Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. (Jer 33:3, NIV) 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5, NIV) B. By Providence (Because He is God) 5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. (Heb 13:5, NIV)
C. By Grace. 1. He answers our first prayer by grace. 2. Then He sustains us by His grace throughout our lives for Him. 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. (John 1:16, NIV) IV. God Will Exalt Us or Lift Us Up. 9 If you make the Most High your dwelling--even the LORD, who is my refuge-- 10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. (Psalms 91:9-10) A. Out of troubles reach. 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm. (Prov 1:33, NIV) B. On a sure foundation (Psalms 40:1-3). 1. Not to look down on the lost, but to look how far God has brought us since salvation. 2. To be closer to Heaven. a. Just think how much we have experienced God! b. Just imagine how much we are like God!
V. God Will Give Us Long Life. 16 With long life will I satisfy him... (Psalms 91:16) A. How long is long? 1. Long enough to do His work. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. (Phil 1:21, NIV). 2. Who would want to live longer than that? 3. We will be satisfied with life. B. So many are living and finding no satisfaction in the lives they live. 1. That is because satisfaction of life does not come from recognition, accumulation, or recreation. 2. Satisfaction comes from God and God alone. 3. There is no satisfaction for those who do not know God. VI. God Will Give Us Eternal Life in Another World. 16... and show him my salvation. (Psalms 91:16b) A. God will show us salvation.
Conclusion 1. Our faith will become sight. 2. We will see Christ 3. We will see Heaven 4. We will see those things clearly what we see now through a glass darkly. B. All of this and more. 9 However, as it is written: 1. These are the rewards of salvation. 2. Did you get what you wanted for Christmas? 3. A little disappointed? 4. We will never be disappointed with what God has in store for us. No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him - (1 Cor 2:9, NIV)
