Historical/Biographical Notes Dr. Grosvenor Tarbell purchased a house in Lincoln in the late 1700s, and married Thankful Hoar in 1801. He was the town's physician until his death in 1822. His son, George Grosvenor Tarbell, was born in Lincoln in 1807, and was a Boston businessman. He remained a bachelor throughout his life. In 1883/1884 he financed the construction of the Lincoln Library, and donated it to the town. His nephew, Dr. George Grosvenor Tarbell, was one of the first Trustees. Other family members include Silas Tarbell and Charles Lee Tarbell. The 19th century Tarbell house in Lincoln is the finest example of Second Empire architectural style in Lincoln. Scope and Content The collection comprises photographs of various members of the Tarbell family from around 1880 to 1960, and includes photographs of the Tarbell house and surrounding area. Correspondence and other documents relating to the Tarbell family between 1860 and 1980 form a part of the collection. Series Descriptions Series 1: Correspondence, etc., ca. 1860-1980.
