How to Use the Emotional Freedom Technique EFT is a powerful, drug-free, easy-to-learn and easy-to-use technique that can reduce stress or painful emotions associated with thoughts, past experiences, etc. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are several points on your body that are tapped gently with the tips of the fingers on one hand, whilst repeating certain relevant phrases at the same time. The theory behind this technique involves the body's energy field, or "meridians", so named by the ancient Chinese. Whether you believe in energy fields or not, you might be curious enough to try this the next time you feel negative emotions - and be surprised by the results. 1. Define the negative emotions (or issues) that are causing you problems, then identify its intensity by assigning a level from 0 to 10. 0 would be "non-existent" and 10 would be the most severe. 2. Clarify your setup phrase, which must be specific. For example, "Even though I feel tense and angry when strangers look at me, I totally and completely love, forgive and accept myself anyway". Or, "Even though I fly into a rage when someone makes fun of my green hair and three heads, I totally and completely love, forgive and accept myself anyway". Or, "Even though I feel hurt, sad and devastated that (name of person) has dumped me, I totally and completely love, forgive and accept myself anyway". Get the idea? 3. Repeat your setup phrase while tapping the 'karate chop point' - the soft spot on the side of either hand - just below your little finger. Tap the point around 7 times (although there's really no need to count). 4. Come up with a reminder phrase. This will be spoken aloud while tapping the other meridian points. Reminder phrases will be a brief reminder of the setup phrase, for example "strangers looking at me", "hate being looked at". Or, "(name of person) dumped me", "dumped me!", "feel gutted", etc. 5. Tap through all of the following points, repeating your reminder phrase: Inner eyebrow, just above the inner "corner" of the eye, on the bone. Outer eye: outside edge of the eye, on the bone. Under the eye: below the center of the eye, again, on the bone. Under the nose, between the nose and the lip. On the chin, right in the middle where the crease is On your chest. Find the "U" shaped bone below your throat, go down 2 inches (5.1 cm) and then 2 inches (5.1 cm) either to the right or left. Under your arm: where your bra strap is or three inches under the crease of your arm. Guys, make a good guess. Some people also like to tap their wrist points at this stage: Insides of wrists facing each other, tap them lightly together. Top of head: In the middle. 6. Now that you've completed your first round of tapping, ask yourself what level the emotion/feeling/ discomfort is at, on a 1 to 10 scale again. 7. Repeat the process until, at the end of the final round, when you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, it's 2 or less. In that instance, your final setup phrase could be, "Even though I still feel a little bit of anger/sadness/ depression about (name of situation), I choose to let it go now as this feeling/emotion no longer serves me." 8. Your reminder phrases can then be "I'm free of this now, "I don't need it anymore, "I'm strong and confident, etc. Page 2

Joanne Verone had an interview about Massaege Cupping by 55 Plus magazine. They are interested in doing an article about cupping because of Michael Phelps s cup marks. Cupping was first used in Egypt 3,000BC as well as China etc. In 1500 B.C., the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient medical textbook, discussed the application of cups for fever, pain, vertigo, menstruation, appetite, constipation and accelerating the "healing crisis" of disease. The Egyptians introduced cupping to the Greeks and then it eventually spread to ancient cultures of many European countries and even the America's. In the 1800's-1900's Europeans and Americans still widely used wet cupping. I use dry cupping and I use plastic and silicone cups. In the records from China, dated from 28 A.D., there was a ",Acupuncture and Cupping...more than half the ills cured." Therapeutic Effects of Massage Cupping Bodywork 1. lymph drainage 2, loosen adhesions 3. release deep tissue issues 4. move stagnation traditional Chinese saying, Joanne Verone using Magnetic Micro- Cupping on her husband John 5. relieve inflammation 6. stimulate blood flow 7. sedate the nervous system "Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings." 3 Reasons Everyone Should Try Cupping 1. Celebrity cupping enthusiasts are growing in numbers. 2. Athletes use cupping as a secret weapon. 3. Cupping provides relief for many health conditions One way to think about cupping is that it is the inverse of massage. Rather than applying pressure to muscles, the suction uses pressure to pull skin, tissue and muscles upward. I often combine cupping with acupuncture into one treatment, but it could also be used alone. Cupping was developed thousands of years ago and though the techniques have modernized, the original philosophy remains the same. Cupping involves placing glass, bamboo or plastic jars on the skin and creating a vacuum by suctioning out the air. The underlying tissue is raised, or sucked, partway into the cup. The purpose of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve pain, remove heat and pull out the toxins. that linger in your body's tissues. You usually will feel a tight sensation in the area of the cup. Often, this sensation is relaxing and soothing. Depending on your comfort and your practitioner's assessment of the problem, cups may be moved around or left in place. They may remain on your body briefly or for longer amounts of time. Each treatment is unique to you on that particular day. One very common area to be cupped is the back, although cups work well on other areas, too particularly on fleshy sections of the body. Cupping causes the skin to temporarily turn red, blue or purple, especially if there is an injury or energetic blockage under the area that was cupped. The skin discoloration can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, but is rarely painful. Once the marks have cleared, the procedure can be repeated until the condition or ailment is resolved. There are a number of methods of cupping the two most common here in the U.S. are "fixed cupping" and "moving cupping." With Fixed Cupping the cups are placed on a selected area of your body and then left in place without being moved. With the Moving Cupping method your practitioner applies massage oil or cream on your skin in selected places, puts the cups over the areas to be treated and then slides them around that region of the body most commonly the back. The cups slide easily because the cream has lubricated your body. Cupping is not exclusive to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Variations of this treatment were used by ancient Egyptians, North American Indians, early Greeks, and in other Asian and European countries. Cupping therapy was recommended by Hippocrates, the man whom many consider to be the "Father of Modern Medicine," in his guide to clinical treatment. It should be noted that cupping is not to be used on patients who bleed easily and/or cannot stop bleeding, have skin ulcers, or edema. It is unwise to cup over large blood vessels as well. Pregnant women should be cupped with extreme caution and never on their abdomen or lower back. Page 5
Fond Friends We Have Lost In Memorium: Nicholas Poulus In Memorium: John Lindauer John Lindauer, devoted husband of annual TPApresenter Kaye Lindauer, passed away suddenly at their home in Chautauqua, where Kaye conducts classes on story interpretation through a Jungian perspective every week of their summer season. Their daughter Camelot and her family where all visiting at the time. The Athenaeum Hotel located close by helped in hosting a memorial service for John at Chautauqua. Another memorial service will be held later this fall when Kaye returns from Chautauqua to their home outside of Manlius. A well-respected lawyer and an excellent cook, John was a constant supporter of Kaye and a kind and generous helper to everyone else as well. He will be missed by all who knew him. Our TPA community was fortunate to have had that opportunity over the years. John was 69 years old. Nicholas Poulus, 73, a familiar and fond friend to many in TPA, passed away peacefully on August 26th after complications from a sudden bout with pneumonia. Nick was well known for his kindness and generosity as well as his deep knowledge of many of the metaphysical topics that we in the Transpersonal Psychology community pursue. He was a follower of Yogananda and would often spend weeks at the headquarters in California. He became an avid practitioner of meditation. Nick held three masters degrees and was Emeritus Professor of Human Services at OCC. After retiring, he continued to occasionally teach adjunct classes at both OCC and Syracuse University. He also pursued additional educational learnings in a serious way. He recently completed studies in Quantum Healing Hypnosis therapy with Delores Cannon as well as workshops with Barbara Marciniak. Many of us locally received the benefits of these latest studies as Nick developed his techniques of past life regression therapy. Nick had also nearly completed a book he was writing that involved conducting interviews with many of his former students. He often used his expertise to volunteer for many causes, most recently in Lesbos, Greece, helping refugees. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Nick s life in early October. Donations can be made to Francis House. Page 6
..Thank you, Cathleen Kelly, for hosting us at her Fiddlehead Retreat Center for a Summer Solstice Celebration (which included a huge bonfire, the full moon ritual for the Solstice, and a drumming circle led by Mike Dermody. But before the festivities began, we were invited to tour some of the acreage on the property by Cathleen s husband, Mike. We hiked pathways, hugged trees and observed the labyrinth. We were also celebrating the 37th birthday of AHP/TPA. (Thank you for the cake, John and Joanne Verone!). Founders Nancy and Dale Gallagher reviewed some of our long history and some original members were in attendance. We also honored the victims of the Orlando massacre in a prayer circle before Cathleen took over telling us her compelling story of how she arrived at this point in her life and how the retreat center and amazing and environmentally-constructed large log home came to be built. We then headed outdoors where Cathleen led us in the ritual, begun by opening the directions. We sang and chanted and lit candles. Later we drummed and were mesmerized by the huge full moon and the blazing bonfire. Cathleen..Sue Savion escaped for a few days to Lake Placid with Jo Anne Bakeman recently. They enjoyed gorgeous weather and beautiful scenery while getting some exercise paddling a canoe in the morning and pedaling unique bikes on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad in Saranac Lake for several miles. Delicious meals lake side, a dip in the pool at Wildwood and a big gain in historic knowledge of the area also added to the brief trip..sue also traveled with Wanda Woods to Lily Dale in August. While there, she discovered that Matilda Joslyn Gage also had a strong presence there. Sue is delighted that she has been asked to be a part of a symposium at Lily Dale next summer as well as presenting on Gage...Martin Otto will offer what he is calling a "Nonsectarian Latin Rite of Holy Communion" with parts such as the prayers said in English, at the RoseHeart Center the first Sunday evening of every month (except January) at 6:30 p.m. The entire rite should take 30-45 minutes, so it will not be a late evening...some of you might be interested in visiting Nick Poulos facebook page for a video of him leading a chant 2 weeks before he died. There is other good stuff there too. The video is on Nick s FB page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php? id=100004143738847 Sue and Jo Anne on Rail Bike These items were left at our last gathering. Does anyone know to whom any of them belong? If so, please contact Sue Savion @ suesavion6@gmail.com. Mike Page 7
