Fireside on Visits from the Spirit World There is a close connection between mortals and their relatives and associates in the Spirit World President Joseph F. Smith stated: sometimes the Lord expands our vision from this point of view and this side of the veil that we feel and seem to realize that we can look beyond the thin veil which separates us from the other sphere. If we can see by the enlightening influence of the Spirit of God and by the words that have been spoken by the Holy Prophets of God, beyond the veil that separates us from the Spirit World; surely those who have passed beyond can see more clearly through the veil back here to us than it is possible for us to see them from our sphere of action. I believe we move and have our being in the presence of Heavenly messengers and of Heavenly beings. We are not separate from them. We begin to realize more and more fully as we become acquainted with the principles of the Gospel as they have been revealed anew in this dispensation that we are closely related to our kindred, to our ancestors, to our friends and associates, and co-labourers who have preceded us into the Spirit World. April 1916 General Conference President Gordon B. Hinckley stated; how marvellous a gift that if we live worthy we shall have the right to the company of Angels. Here is protection, here is guidance, here is direction-all of these from powers beyond our own natural gifts. Vacaville-Rosa Regional Conference 21 May 1995 Elder John Widtsoe said: Many other intelligent beings superior to us no doubt take part in the work of man on the earth. There are Angels and spirits who have assigned to them the care of men and women who walk upon the earth. Man is not alone; he walks in the midst of such heavenly company from whom he may expect help if he seeks it properly and strongly. A Rational Theology Deseret Books 1965 page 68g All who are allowed to visit are connected to this earth Connected as part of this earth is the spiritual realm called the Spirit World! All manifestations that are received by individuals will come from that sphere, with the possible exception of the Godhead. The Prophet Joseph Smith stated There are no Angels who minister to this earth, but those who do belong or have belonged to it D&C 130:5 Who are the different classes of Angels who are permitted to visit? All who are allowed to visit from the Spirit World may be termed as Angels in the broadest definition. An Angel is any personage who is specifically sent from the Spirit World with a message or task to perform. The word angel actually means messenger. Religious art that portrays Angels with wings and halos of light are artistic devises used to distinguish them from mere mortals. They are symbols of both power and to represent the ability of Angels to move swiftly between Heaven and earth. Of course angels do not have wings (see D&C 77:4) 1

Angels can come with resurrected bodies such as Moroni but most come as ministering Spirits without resurrected bodies. The many recorded visits of Angels in the Old Testament and the Book of Mormon, including those to Mary and Elizabeth in the New Testament were all Spirits without resurrected bodies simply because Christ was the first to be resurrected. The scriptures teach there are at least five different kinds of persons who function as angels. There are the spirits of those who have not yet come to the earth, as was the situation when an angel taught Adam the principle of sacrifice (see Moses 5:6 8). Angels are also the spirits of those who have lived righteously on earth, have died, and are awaiting their resurrection. These individuals are referred to as just men made perfect (D&C 129:3). The visit of Gabriel to Zacharias and to Mary illustrates this kind of being. Translated beings function as angels, as was the case with the appearance of Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration (see Matt. 17:1 3). The Apostle John was translated and became a ministering angel; he shall minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation who dwell on the earth (D&C 7:6). Resurrected beings are a fourth kind of being to serve as angels. The appearances of Moroni and John the Baptist to Joseph Smith illustrate this type. And lastly, holy men living on earth occasionally are referred to as angels as they act as ministers for God. The appearance of angels to Lot to warn him of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah seems to fit this classification (see Gen. 19 President Joseph F. Smith gave insight about angels who minister to those on the earth When messengers are sent to minister to the inhabitants of this earth, they are not strangers, but from the ranks of our kindred, friends, and fellow-beings and fellow-servants. The ancient prophets who died were those who came to visit their fellow creatures upon the earth. They came to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; it was such beings holy beings if you please who waited upon the Savior and administered to him on the Mount. The angel that visited John, when an exile, and unfolded to his vision future events in the history of man upon the earth, was one who had been here, who had toiled and suffered in common with the people of God. In like manner our fathers and mothers, brothers, sisters and friends who have passed away from this earth, having been faithful, and worthy to enjoy these rights and privileges, may have a mission given them to visit their relatives and friends upon the earth again, bringing from the Divine Presence messages of love, of warning, or reproof and instruction, to those whom they had learned to love in the flesh. (Gospel Doctrine, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1970, pp. 435 36. The visits of Angels are frequent and have been since the days of Adam There are recorded visits of over 300 Angels in the Bible alone. Elder Mark E. Petersen stated: Many people no longer believe in the ministry of angels, but God does! He has used this means of communication from the days of Adam. Is there any reason He should not continue the procedure in our day? Those that doubt would do well to remember that God is the same yesterday, today and always. Ensign Nov 1983 The many recorded experiences in scripture, church history, and in member s journals attest to the fact that Angelic ministrations are real reasonably frequent and administer to the needs of human beings. Angels are one of the means by which Our Heavenly Father has influence 2

over His children: President Heber C. Kimball stated: He is near by His Angels are our associates. They are with us and round about us, and watch over us, and take care of us, and lead us, and guide us, and administer to our wants in their ministry and in their Holy Calling unto which they are appointed. JD 2:22 Elder Orson Hyde also stated: He makes His Angels ministering Spirits and they are sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. The Lord is everywhere present by His ministering Angels, just like any other ruler, monarch or king, who has ministers everywhere through His dominions; and God s ministers are everywhere. JD 2:63 Visits are only allowed with permission and under the supervision of the Priesthood Any visitations will be orderly, with a distinct purpose fulfilling a need. They will not be, random, impromptu, weird, and disorderly with a muffled message. Such visits may well be from a different source that is trying to deceive. Elder Charles W. Penrose said: As the living are not in their mortal condition, able to see and converse with the dead, it is rational to believe, the inhabitants of the spiritual domain are in their normal condition, shut out from communication with men in the flesh. By permission of the Lord, persons on either side of the veil may be manifest to those on the other, but this will certainly be by law and according to the order which God has established. Faith is required to receive the visitation of Angels Mormon testified: Neither have Angels ceased to minister unto the children of men. For behold they are subject unto Him (God) to minister according to the word of His command showing themselves unto them of strong faith and a firm mind in every form of Godliness. Moroni 7:29-30 It is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief. (Moroni 7:37) Children are given the protecting hand of Angels The Saviour said: Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in Heaven their Angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in Heaven Matthew 18:10 Note the following from a General Conference talk in April 2011 by Kent F. Richards of the Seventy: I have noted that children are often more naturally accepting of pain and suffering. They quietly endure with humility and meekness. I have felt a beautiful, sweet spirit surrounding these little ones. Thirteen-year-old Sherrie underwent a 14-hour operation for a tumor on her spinal cord. As she regained consciousness in the intensive care unit, she said: Daddy, Aunt Cheryl is here, and Grandpa Norman and Grandma Brown are here. And Daddy, who is that 3

standing beside you? He looks like you, only taller. He says he s your brother, Jimmy. Her uncle Jimmy had died at age 13 of cystic fibrosis. For nearly an hour, Sherrie described her visitors, all deceased family members. Exhausted, she then fell asleep. Later she told her father, Daddy, all of the children here in the intensive care unit have angels helping them. See Michael R. Morris, Sherrie s Shield of Faith, Ensign, June 1995. See the Experience of President David O McKay page 90 visits from beyond the veil and under Visits from the Spirit World to give Comfort and Assistance There is always a Definite Purpose in Visiting Not only will permission from Priesthood authorities need to be given there will also be a definite need. They will not appear for frivolous or inconsequential reasons. The following is taken from the book Visits from beyond the Veil by Marlene Sullivan. Wilford Woodruff said that a person once confided to him that he had prayed many times to see an Angel, but that his prayers had not been answered. President woodruff said: I said to him that if he were to pray a thousand years to the God of Israel for that gift it would not be granted unless the Lord had a motive in sending an Angel to him. I told him that the Lord never did, nor never will send an Angel to anybody merely to gratify the desire of the individual to see an Angel. If the Lord sends an Angel to anyone, H sends him to perform a work that cannot be performed except by the administration of an Angel. It is important to remember that if an earthly person needs can be met by family or friends, then there is no need for a ministering spirit to visit. Some of the purposes in Visiting Examples from the Scriptures What do angels do when they minister unto men and women? The scriptures show that they: Announce and testify of events pertaining to God s work and glory (see Matt. 1:20 21; 28:1 6; Luke 1:11 20; 2:8 14; Rev. 14:6; D&C 88:92 110) Preach the gospel and minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ (Moro. 7:22; see also Moses 5:58) Declare the word of Christ unto chosen vessels of the Lord, that they may bear testimony of Him (Moro. 7:31; see also Mosiah 3:1 27) Bring to earth their rights, their keys, their honors, their majesty and glory, and the power of their priesthood (D&C 128:21; see also 27:12; 110:11 16; JS H 1:68 70) Protect and guide the servants of God in times of trouble so that they may accomplish his purposes (see Acts 5:18 20; Dan. 3:28; 1 Ne. 3:29; Hel. 5) 4

Bring comfort, instruction, and warnings to faithful individuals in times of need (see Gen. 16:7; Ex. 23:20 23; Matt. 2:13, 19 20; 1 Ne. 11:14 15:30; Alma 8:14 18).
