Rev. Sheila Fiorella, Pastor August 2018 Come Celebrate our 30 Year Reunion Celebration of Celebrate Life! A Pulpit Musical/Drama Sunday, 12 August 2018, 6:00 to 9:00 pm 1st UMC, Watauga Come help us celebrate, everyone who s a part of our church family, recent additions and long timers as well! Of the 30+ people who participated in our Celebrate Life! presentation in May, 1988, many moved far away or moved their church membership. Of those, Rick and Connie Springer, choir director and choir member, and about 10 others have indicated plans to attend. Help us welcome them back in this joyful Reunion Celebration! We ll be eating simple summer sandwiches and foods that go good with such sandwiches, like chips, dips, veggies, and fruits, all simple and cool since it s summer in Texas! If you live within a few miles of our church facilities, please bring something for this meal. Contact Alice Garrett to find out what s needed and let her know what you plan to bring. You can contact Alice at jeffgarr@hotmail.com or 817-797-4562. After the meal, we ll watch several segments/ chapters from an original VHS recording, take an offering to pay some on utility expenses and benefit our choir fund, and sing a few of the songs from Celebrate Life! The musical/drama tells the story of Jesus in simple, dramatic, and memorable melodies along with four people portraying Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, who tell about their faith journey and some of their experiences. A few of the song titles are: The Truth Shall Make You Free, There Is A Great Joy Coming, Hello Baby, The Three Kings, In Remembrance, Carry Him Gently, and He Is Alive! There will be games to entertain both the young and the young at heart. Drinks will be available for purchase. Please come out and join us! We want A quick note from Finance, We continue to monitor our income and spending and we have great group of people making those tough decisions on the finance committee. There is a weekly report generated and sent to all Finance committee members that show our weekly income and expenses that were paid out and our weekly checking account balance, so the Finance committee can stay on top of the needs of the church. We are in the middle of summer when members are typically on vacation or visiting family and weekly contributions can decrease, so remember that when you return. Everything that you do is greatly appreciated. The Trustee s committee and Jim Bates have been working hard over the last More Cars Than Stars 11 August 2018, at 9:00 AM to get to know our neighbors and their cool cars! If you want to bring a car, or know anyone that does, please contact Shane Milner by email, shanewm@sbcglobal.net. We already have some cool cars coming, which include: 1967 Corvette, Chevy Nova, 1948 Cj3a Jeep, 1982 280z Datson, and more to come. Shane Milner year to get our roof repairs done, which are in the final stages and work should start shortly on the repairs. These repairs could only have been accomplished through generous donations from members of our congregation and insurance claims. The Lord is growing and working in our church, let us take the light outside the walls and let it shine. God bless and guide you and your family throughout the year! UMW Meeting Monday, 20 August 2018, at 7:00 PM Doris Maxwell, Chairperson United Methodist Women will meet for an interesting program about missions. We sponsor many different types of mission programs to enrich the lives of women and children. There is even a program to give money to start a business. Many start cooking, cleaning, and baking businesses, but one woman started a pig farm. She now employs eleven other women. With her $100 start-up money, she now supports twelve families. Come and find out about our work. Hope to see you, your friends & relatives in The Shepherd Shop on Sat., 11 August! We WILL be open regular hours during the Car Show. When you're hot from strolling around and looking at all the interesting vehicles, come into the Shop. Our air conditioning will be ON!!! And you might see something you need or want. We're hoping the Car Show attracts some new people to the Church and to the Shop. It's amazing how many people drive by our facility for years and don't know we're here! Also, the Shepherd Shop needs a working vacuum cleaner. Do you have one to donate? Ruth Strong We currently do not have a custodian to clean our church. Please help us by cleaning your Sunday School rooms and bringing trash to the kitchen. Page 4 The Beacon August 2018

Looking for ways to help at FUMC Watauga Looking for Sunday School Teachers FUMC is looking for Sunday School Teachers to educate our children and young adults. What a great way to show God s love through teaching our children the stories of the Bible. Contact Barb Buckley, email: craftgirlbarb@aol.com Know how to sing or play an instrument! Darin Hoppe, our choir director, or Shane, leading the praise band, would love to have you join them. They practice on Thursday evenings. The Lord is growing and working in our church, let us take the light outside the walls and let it shine. Thank you All, for what you do at FUMC Watauga Your Communication leader Duane R Buckley buckleydr@aol.com Fresh Expressions Vision Day 22 September 2018 Are you interested in renewal within our existing congregation and reversing decline? Would you benefit from discerning what this might mean for your community or neighborhood? Are you willing to imagine and collaborate on new ways to be the church? If so, then register NOW for the FRESH EXPRESSIONS VISION DAY, 22 Sep at First Mansfield. Register at freshexpressionsus.org/event/forthworthareavisionday. Yes, God calls each of us to grow - in our faith, in our love of God, in our witness and stewardship, and in new ways to make disciples and be part of the transformation of our world. What opportunities does God have in store for you? Let s explore new ways of being the church and growing together! The Drew Library Have you seen the elementary classroom at the end of the hall? Diane Kissel and her teammates cleaned up and organized the room and all the books on the shelves of The Drew Library. They boxed up books and materials that could be used by others; making First UMC of Watauga better stewards of what God has blessed us with! Thank you Diane, Barb, Melanie, Sydney and anyone else that worked so hard to improve our church! Once again, you have each made a difference. Page 6 The Beacon August 2018

A great big Thank You to everyone who helped with Vacation Bible School. Thank you: A note of thanks for all the prayers, calls, and cards since my fall. Doctor released me from the boot, and I am working toward normal walking. Y all have been great. Rosemary Celia and Melanie for directing VBS this year. Yoma and Claire for feeding the Rafters. Doris and Carol for being Team Leaders and helping with registration. Samantha for giving Romper a voice. David for supplying sound. Tabs for Ronald McDonald House Thanks to all that help collect aluminum tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. It is very appreciated. Nancy Brooks and Yoma and Don Johnson delivered the tabs to the RMH in July and took a tour of the house. It was very interesting and informative. Last year they served 803 families and our little donations helped. I am hoping to go back during the Christmas season (we were told it was decorated so pretty by volunteers) and take more donations and a group tour. More details later. They did send us a Thank You letter and it will be on the board in the narthex. Gene for reflections. Darin for music. Melanie for story telling. Shane for games. Gary for crafts. Melanie, Barb, Duane, Celia, Donyè, Maddie, and everyone who decorated. Youth and other volunteers who helped wherever needed. Everyone who donated food.
