1 Manuscripts & Folklife Archives Department of Library Special Collections Western Kentucky University Bowling Green, KY 42101-1092 Descriptive Inventory STAHL Family Papers 9 boxes. 124 folders. 2,551 items. 1785-2012. Originals or photocopies SC2015.87.1 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE John Stahl (1750-1815) and his family moved from Pennsylvania to Green County Kentucky in 1795. He had purchased land there in 1793 and likely spent the intervening years improving the property before relocating his family. In 1804 John, his wife Magdalene, and their children moved to a 300-acre farm between the communities of Rich Pond and Woodburn in Warren County, Kentucky. Descendants of this family later also lived in Butler County and Todd County, Kentucky. John and Magdalene eventually had twelve children. Their names in order of birth were: David Ewing, Jacob, Daniel, John W., Isaac, Mary Magdalene, Esther, Benjamin, Ann, Elizabeth, Ruth, and Phebe. Morton French Stahl, the gatherer of this collection descended from the Isaac Stahl mentioned above. He was born in Warren County, Kentucky on 10 December 1929, the son of Briggs and Ruth Wilson Stahl in the Browning community contiguous to Clear Fork and Black Lick Creeks. He attended Browning Elementary, South Warren High School and the Bowling Green Business University. He later served two years in the United States Army, most of which was with the Adjutant General Section of the 40 th Infantry Division in Korea. He was awarded the bronze star medal for successfully evacuating personnel and assisting in the move of division headquarters to higher ground during a flash flood. In 1958 he became executive director of Warren County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), which was charged with the administration of farm programs mandated by Congress. He served in this capacity for thirty years. Toward the end of his career, he also taught management classes for potential ASCS executive directors in the southeast United States. Other than his wartime service, Stahl lived his entire life in Warren County. In 1976, the United States bicentennial year, Morton became interested in genealogical and historical research and wrote several family and church history books including: The Family of John Stahl (1977); Providence Knob Baptist Church, Warren County, Kentucky, 1804-1998 (1999); Clear Fork Baptist Church, Warren County, Kentucky, 1833-1993, vols. 1 and 2 (1983 & 1993); In His Image: The Family of John Stahl (1980); Warren Association of Baptists, 1890-2001, Warren County, Kentucky (2004).

2 Morton was a twenty-year firefighter with the Browning Volunteer Fire Department. He was ordained a deacon at Clear Fork Baptist Church in 1961 and was volunteer music director at that church for fifty years. Morton married Margaret Ann Price on 3 March 1957. She was the daughter of Virgil and Mollie (Sledge) Price. Morton and Margaret were the parents of Briggs Price Stahl (b. 1958) and Barry Wilson Stahl (b. 1965). Morton French Stahl died on 24 May 2015 and was interred in Bowling Green s Fairview Cemetery. COLLECTION NOTE This collection, gathered by Morton French Stahl, chiefly documents his genealogical research on the Stahl family, beginning with John Stahl (1750-1815) and his move to Green County, Kentucky in 1795. The collection also includes research material related to churches in Warren County, Kentucky, and corollary families of the Stahl clan. Box 1 of the collection includes Morton Stahl s correspondence. It is almost exclusively genealogical in nature. Of particular interest is his more than 100 letters in Folders 5 and 6 with Euruth R. (Stahl) Stem. Correspondents with less than 10 items can be found in the General Correspondence in Folders 10-12. A few letters written to Morton s parents, Briggs and Ruth Stahl, are found in Folder 9. Box 2 includes a master copy of Stahl s family history In His Image: The Family of John Stahl published in 1980 in Folders 1-4; some revisions to the same book are included in Folder 5, and Folder 6 contains some administrative papers related to the book s publication. Folder 7 contains information about a number of entries that Stahl provided for a book titled Warren County, Kentucky Families published by the Warren County Historical Society and the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society in 1991. The remaining folders in Box 2 contain information about Stahl family members, including Briggs, Morton s son, and Horace, Morton s brother. Warren County, Kentucky land records and tax receipts belonging to the Stahl family, including abstracts for purchased land, can be found in Box 3 as well as estate papers from Briggs Stahl and Ruth Stahl (Morton s parents), Mollie G. Price (Morton s maternal grandmother) and A.J. Stahl (Morton s paternal grandfather). Box 4 contains genealogical information for the descendants of John Stahl in Kentucky. Morton arranged these alphabetically and that arrangement was retained. Each folder is roughly organized in this manner: genealogical charts; pages from the Stahl family history that relate to that individual and his immediate family; contemporary and historical correspondence; copies of documents; research notes; photographs. Most of the material in Box 4 consists of photocopies, not original documents. A good portion of the photographs are of tombstones, although there are some original photos of family members. Boxes 5 through 7 contain information about corollary families; those folders are organized alphabetically and the contents of the folders are arranged in the same method as listed above for the Stahl family folders. Box 4, Folder 7a includes records of supplies, clothing, horses, arms, ordnance, muster rolls, and payrolls kept by Captain Daniel Marion Stahl for Company D of the 11 th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (Union). Box 8 includes master copies of Stahl s histories of Providence Knob Baptist Church and the Warren Association of Baptists. The histories submitted by churches for the Association history are not complete (Folders 7-8); the published book includes churches that are not reflected in the research material. Others folders related to the Association history include

3 information and photographs of past Associational directors (Folder 6), administrative correspondence about the book s printing and orders (Folder 5), and information about educational institutions linked to the Association (Folder 9). Folder 13 includes information and photographs about the new Warren Association of Baptist headquarters completed in the late- 1990s and previous buildings. South Warren High School (Rockfield, Kentucky) reunions from 1988 to 2012 are documented in Box 9. The box includes invitations and correspondence from attendees, reunion programs, class rosters, a Pictorial History of South Warren High School (Folder 5) and other miscellaneous material including a short history of cheerleaders at South Warren High (Folder 6). The photographs in Folder 4 include some images of the new South Warren High School in Rich Pond, Kentucky. Morton Stahl attended South Warren High School and was a cheerleader.
