JULY 1, 2018 1 Matthew 18:21 35 So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart. (Matthew 18:35, NRSV) Forgive and Forget Jesus wants us to forgive others. He told a story called a parable, about a man who was given forgiveness by a king to whom he owed a lot of money. But the man who had been shown forgiveness didn t forgive someone else who owed him money. When the king found out that the person whom he had forgiven wasn t forgiving towards others, he had the man thrown in jail. Jesus told this story to show that because He has forgiven us, we should forgive others. God loves all people and offers forgiveness to everyone. Those who choose to accept His forgiveness should forgive others. If we forgive others, we are showing them the love of Jesus. All we have to do is forgive. Week of July 1, 2018 LESSON #1 AT HOME Letter to Parents/ Guardians Today, your child learned that Jesus taught us to forgive others. Jesus told a story about a man who was forgiven of a large debt but wasn t willing to forgive the smaller debt of others. The man was punished by the king who had originally forgiven him when he found out the man was unforgiving. It is our natural instinct to lash out in anger and retaliation towards others. But as Christians, we are called to be like Christ and offer forgiveness. By helping your child understand what forgiveness is, you can help him or her begin to learn about the forgiveness Jesus gives. Explain what grace is, and help your child learn that Jesus gift to us isn t earned but given out of grace. Likewise, we should forgive out of grace. (Complete activity with your parents /guardians help.) There will be times when you will get mad at someone for doing something mean to you. It is important to remember that we should ask God for help when we become angry. If we remember to do this, then we will be pleasing God and letting Him take control of the problem. This week, pray and ask God to help you remember to forgive instead of being angry at those who do wrong to you. This will help you get ready for the next time you are mad. JULY 8, 2018 2 Matthew 23:1 4, 23 26 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. (Matthew 23:23, NRSV) Practice What You Preach When Jesus was alive, there were religious leaders called the Pharisees and the Sadducees. The religious leaders didn t like Jesus because they were sinful. One day, Jesus was preaching to some people and told them that they should not follow the example of the religious leaders. These leaders would tell the people how to live for God, but then they would sin and break God s laws. Jesus led by example and practiced what He taught others. Jesus never sinned, and we should follow His example. If we do what Jesus taught and did, we will show others Jesus love and lifestyle just by the things that we do. If we say we love Jesus but break His laws, others won t believe our teaching. GROWING WITH JESUS LESSON TWO JULY 8, 2018 PAGE 9

Week of July 8, 2018 LESSON #2 AT HOME Letter to Parents/ Guardians Today, your child learned the importance of practicing what we preach. Jesus was preaching to the people and told them to do as the local religious leaders say, but not as they do. Jesus proceeded to speak to the religious leaders and tell them how wrong and awful it was that they did not lead by example. Jesus cautioned the rest of the audience to be careful and mindful of who was teaching them God s law. For Jesus, it wasn t a matter of what was being taught but a matter of their heart and their motives. This week, help your child to not only learn the lessons in the Bible, but also to put what the Bible says into practice. During this time in your child s life, it is important to develop these habits. (Complete activity with your parents /guardians help.) What are some ways that you can do what you have been taught to do? Maybe you can show kindness to everyone you meet, or maybe you can share the love of Jesus with others. There are many ways that you can apply to your life what you have been taught. With a parent s help, get a piece of paper and some markers and write down ways that you can apply to your life the lessons you have learned from the Bible.
