Unit 7 Session 3 UNIT 7 SESSION 3 Use Week of: THE PROMISED LAND AND JERICHO Joshua 2 4; 6 Joshua 1:9 MAIN POINT: We can trust God. BIBLE PASSAGE: KEY PASSAGE: The Bible Story Joshua 2 4; 6 BIBLE STORY FOR TODDLERS Joshua sent two men into the promised land. In Jericho, Rahab hid the men on her roof. She said, Your God is God. Please rescue my family. They said her family would be safe if they stayed inside Rahab s house. The men went back to Joshua. Joshua led the people to the Jordan River. God made the water stand up on one side, and the people walked across. They picked up 12 stones from the river to remember what God did. Joshua told the people to march quietly around Jericho. For six days, they marched. On the seventh day, they marched seven times. On the seventh time, the priests blew the trumpets, and the people shouted. Jericho s wall fell down! Babies Activities LOOK IN THE BIBLE Provide hand-size Bibles for babies to hold and turn the pages. Open your Bible to Joshua 2. Show the Bible story picture as you say the Gospel Gems. You may read the key passage card. SAY: Joshua trusted God to be with His people. Joshua led the people into the promised land. WE CAN TRUST GOD. [Pray.] SING A SONG Sing to the tune of Are You Sleeping? : God is with you, God is with you everywhere, everywhere! God is always with you. He will never leave you. Trust in God. Trust in God! SAY: God promised Joshua that God would be with him wherever he went. God is with us, too! WE CAN TRUST GOD. BUILD WITH BLOCKS Build a tower with two or three soft blocks. Invite babies to stack blocks with you or knock down the blocks. SAY: God s people walked around the city of Jericho. God knocked down the walls of Jericho so His people could go inside! WE CAN TRUST GOD. PLAY PEEKABOO Play peekaboo with a baby. Say, Who can trust God? [Baby s name] can trust God! Play multiple times with each baby. SAY: Who can trust God? WE CAN TRUST GOD! Joshua trusted God to be with His people. Later God sent Jesus to be with His people. Check diapers, serve bottles if needed, and release babies to parents according to your church s security guidelines. Give parents today s big picture card. Repeat the Gospel Gems and Bible-learning activities for babies who stay a second hour. 15
Toddler Activities CIRCLE TIME (5 MINUTES) Provide Bibles for toddlers to hold. Say the Bible is God s words. Read the key passage card and guide toddlers to say it. Open your Bible to Joshua 2. Show the Bible story picture as you tell the story. SAY: Joshua trusted God to be with His people when they entered the promised land. WE CAN TRUST GOD. [Pray for the toddlers.] MAKE TRUMPETS Provide clean paper towel tubes or tape construction paper into a cone shape for each toddler. Invite toddlers to decorate their trumpets with stickers and then make trumpet sounds. SAY: Joshua and the people walked around Jericho without making a sound. When they blew the trumpets, God made the walls fall down! Joshua trusted God, and WE CAN TRUST GOD too. MARCH QUIETLY Invite toddlers to line up and follow you as you march quietly around the room. Remind toddlers that God s people did not make a sound until the priests blew the trumpets. SAY: Joshua trusted God to be with His people. Later, God sent Jesus to be with His people. WE CAN TRUST GOD! ROLL A BALL Invite toddlers to sit in pairs and roll a ball to a friend. SAY: Joshua sent two men to work together to look at the land. Joshua trusted God. WE CAN TRUST GOD! PLAY WITH WATER Half-fill a shallow tub with water. Provide cups, scoops, or floating toys for toddlers. Keep towels handy for cleanup. SAY: God led His people through the Jordan River. Bonus Teaching Hour THE PROMISED LAND AND JERICHO Joshua 2 4; 6 KEY PASSAGE: Joshua 1:9 MAIN POINT: We can trust God. BIBLE PASSAGE: TRANSITION ACTIVITY: MAKE A MURAL Tape a large sheet of blue paper to the floor or wall at a toddler s eye level. Cut simple fish shapes out of sticky notes and invite toddlers to stick them to the wall. You may also tape gray construction paper circles for toddlers to remove the stones. SAY: God led His people through the Jordan River. The people gathered stones to remember what God did. WE CAN TRUST GOD! FINGER PLAY ABOUT GOD Lead toddlers to do the hand motions with you as you say the finger play below. Check out ASL signs online as well. God loves me. [Hug yourself.] God is always with me. [Point up to God.] I can trust God. [Stack one fist on top of the other at chest level.] SAY: God promised to be with His people. God sent Jesus to be with us. WE CAN TRUST GOD. STAY IN THE HOUSE Tape a large square on the floor and explain it is Rahab s house. Say that you will count to seven, and toddlers must hurry inside the house before you finish counting. SAY: Rahab trusted God. God kept her safe. WE CAN TRUST GOD! Check diapers, serve a snack if needed, and release toddlers to parents according to your church s security procedures. Give parents today s big picture card to reinforce today s Bible story, Main Point, or Gospel Gems throughout the week. 17
