(page 1) Joshua Leads the People WHAT S THE POINT? Determination is at the very heart of a great baseball game or a hero s actions. To keep on going regardless of the circumstances is not always easy, but it makes all the difference. Great accomplishments require determination. Doing things God s way also requires determination. BIBLE CONNECTION Joshua 1:6-9; 6:12-16, 20; Joshua 21:43-45 (pages 225-226; 230-231; 248) CHARACTER WORD Determination To continue on, regardless of the circumstances TEACHING OBJECTIVE I can be determined to do things God s way. MEMORY LINK Psalm 25:4 Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. (KBC Study Bible pg. 575) SUPPLIES NEEDED THIS WEEK GET CONNECTED None MEMORY LINK ACTIVITY Option 1: None Option 2: None BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching Resource SURF TEAM LEADER Memory Link cards, index cards, pens, Hang 10 pages MAKE-IT-STICK REVIEW GAME Option 1: Beach balls Option 2: Music In today s story, even when God s instructions seemed strange, Joshua and the Israelites were determined to obey. Because they showed determination, the city of Jericho was defeated. God showed His power and provided deliverance. God is always determined to make His Name great. The defeat of Jericho showed the nations surrounding Israel how great God is. Psalm 98:1-2 says, Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. The Lord has made known His salvation; His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations. We can be determined because we have a great God. He is the One who defeats. He is the One who provides salvation. He is the One who delivers. When things get hard for us, we can keep going and put our trust in Him. We can be determined to do things God s way. GET CONNECTED Worship Tip 10-15 10-15 Minutes Building relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today s lesson Use the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your surf team and to introduce today s lesson. Today s character word is determination. What do you think it means? Can you think of any movie characters that showed determination? Has there been a time in school or sports when you needed to show determination? In what situation would it be hard to be determined? Guide clubbers to locate and mark today s Bible connection and memory link in their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session. Reading a verse of scripture before you lead the songs is a great way to help kids focus on God. Psalm 96:1-4a says, Oh sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples; for the Lord is great and greatly to be praised.

MEMORY LINK Teaching a Bible verse to clubbers; helping them to memorize the verse 10-15 Focus on the Bible Lead the kids in a Bible drill to find today s memory link. Ask the kids to hold their Bible by the binding. Call out the verse reference. Ask the kids to repeat the verse reference back to you. Explain that you will say, charge then they can begin to look for the verse. Once they find the verse they may stand up and put their finger on the verse. Ask your surf team leaders to be ready to provide assistance as needed. If some of the children are having difficulty, call out the page number of the memory link (page 575). Encourage the kids to spend time using their Bibles each day. Explain that if they determine to do their Hang 10 each day and look up the passages, they will become more familiar with the Bible. Focus on today s Memory Link Have you ever been lost while in a store? Have your parents gotten lost while driving in the car? (Allow a couple of kids to give a short example.) Did you ask someone to help you find your way? Did your parent look up the directions on a phone? Call for a volunteer to read the memory link aloud. Today s verse tells us who we can go to to find our way in life. God will show us the way to live and will teach us His paths. We can show determination to do things God s way when we listen to Him, learn His ways and follow Him. (page 2) Psalm 25:4 Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. (KBC Study Bible pg. 575) Since you have two choices of activities, be sure to communicate to your team which one you are going to lead. Explain how you will play the game or any changes you may have made. Show the surf team leaders the items you will use for the activity. Option 1 - SHOW ME YOUR WAYS Teach hand motions for the memory link to the whole group or allow the surf teams to work together in small groups. After the kids have had time to learn the motions, let each team take a turn saying the verse while doing the hand motions in front of the large group. Show me spread hands out wide and high Your ways open hands, palms up in front of waist O Lord make an L with your thumb and index finger Teach me pretend to be writing with a pencil Your paths have palms facing each other and arms straight in front Option 2 - FOLLOW THE LEADER Explain that in today s story the people walked around the walls of Jericho 7 times. Instruct each surf team to follow their leader on a walk around the room. As you walk, repeat the verse. Lead the kids to follow you as you skip, march, wave arms, etc. Thank them for showing determination to follow you.

BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching today s character word through a gospel-centered Bible story 10-15 (page 3) Teaching Resource Joshua 1:6-9; 6:12-16, 20; 21:43-45 (KBC Study Bible pages 225-226; 230-231; 248) Prepare Assign speaking parts for God and Joshua to strong readers. Give readers copies of Joshua Leads the People Drama (Resources) Introduce the Session Ask three volunteers to demonstrate marching. After a moment, ask kids if they have ever seen a marching band. Invite volunteers to share what they know about marching bands. Explain that today s Bible story is about the first marching band. Joshua 1:6-9 Guide kids to find Joshua 1:6-9 in their Bibles (page 225). Ask a volunteer to read the verses aloud as the other kids follow along. God promised to give the land to His people. God told them to be determined to obey Him. He told them they would prosper wherever they went if they obeyed and kept His Word. God said they must be strong and courageous because He was with them. Bible Background Joshua was the leader of God s people, the Israelites. He led the people after Moses. There was a city called Jericho that was surrounded by a great big wall. God promised the Israelites the city, but they would have to battle for it; or would they? God gave them some instructions that seemed crazy. It involved marching...a lot of marching. Joshua was determined to lead the people to do things God s way. What did God promise them if they would obey Him? Yes, God promised that He would be with them. Joshua 6:12-16, 20 Stand at the door and welcome the kids as they enter. Call them by name and tell them you are glad to see them. Mention a brief word about what they will learn today. You may even want to show them a picture of the story being told or a visual of some kind that relates to the Bible story. Hide a few items in the room that relate to the Bible story. As the first kids arrive, tell them to search the room. When they find the items, discuss how they connect with the Bible story. Ask them to hide the items for the kids who arrive next. Act It Out Explain that the kids will act out this part of today s story. Point out the kids you selected to read the parts of Joshua and God. Assign half the surf teams to act out the part of the soldiers and half the surf teams to act out the parts of the priests. Tell the kids you will read the part of the narrator and prompt groups with what to say and when to say it. Follow the drama script in Joshua Leads the People Drama (Resources). When the drama concludes, guide the kids make the sound of the trumpets, then make the sound of the people shouting and finally make the sound of the wall falling down. Thank the readers and surf teams then continue the lesson. Talk About It Remember how at the beginning of the book of Joshua, Joshua and the people of Israel determined they would do things God s way? They didn t understand God s battle plan. Marching around the city of Jericho didn t make any sense,

but they trusted God and had determined to obey Him. God gave them the victory over Jericho and kept His promise to them. Joshua 21:43-45 Ask kids to open their Bibles to Joshua 21:43-45 (page 248) and ask a volunteer to read the verses aloud while the group follows along in their Bibles. Ask the kids to identify the things God did for the people of Israel because they were determined to do things Gods way. He gave them the land He promised them. He gave them rest. No enemy could stand against them. Everything God promised happened. God is the perfect example of determination because He always keeps His promises, even when people let Him down. Gospel Connection In the beginning when the first people, Adam and Eve, sinned, God determined to send a Savior. All people are born in sin and choose to sin against God. God is perfect and cannot tolerate sin. Sin requires a punishment, which is separation from God. But God loves you. He kept His promise and sent Jesus to be the Savior. Jesus took the punishment you deserve. God promises that you can have a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ alone. You do that when you ADMIT you are a sinner and ASK for forgiveness. You must BELIEVE that Jesus is God s Son and that He died and rose again. Then you can CONFESS your faith in Him. You can determine to do things God s way by placing your faith in Jesus Christ, making Him your Savior and Lord. Invite kids wanting to know more about becoming a Christian to move to the designated area to meet with a leader one-on-one. (page 4) Gospel Tip Remember to emphasize God as the main character in today s story, not Joshua or the Israelites. God gave the victory over Jericho and He is determined to keep His promises and make His Name great. God is the ruler over all. He took care of the Israelites and He takes care of us. He gave us Jesus who had victory over death when we rose again. Jesus death and resurrection can give us victory over sin! Application/Transition God requires us to do things His way, even if we don t understand all of the instructions. Remember, He said in Joshua 1 to not turn from obedience to the right or to the left. God promised to show us His ways and teach us His paths. How can we learn about His ways? (Reading the Bible, praying, coming to KBC) Be determined to follow and obey Him, whether that s being kind to your sibling, obeying your parents or teachers, or saying no to bad things. You can be determined to do things God s way and you can trust God to always be with you.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today s Bible Connection and Character Word 5-10 (page 5) Memory Link cards, Hang 10 pages, index cards, pens Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible connection leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their forever friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. Today s Lesson What questions do you have about today s story? What did God promise Joshua and the Israelites? (Give them the land, be with them) What promises does God give to us? (Be with us, love us, etc.) What does it mean to do things God s way? How can you be determined to obey God even when it seems hard? Do your best to prevent problems. Is the environment troublefree? Are there things on your table or around your group that may distract the kids during the lesson time? Remove distractions so the kids will have every chance to make good choices and listen without distractions. Model how to focus, listen and engage. Pray Encourage kids to write prayer requests on index cards. Lead the kids in prayer. Take the cards home and pray for kids during the week. Dear God, thank You for Your promises. Please help me to be determined to follow You. Thank You for Kids Beach Club where I can come and learn about You. In Jesus name, Amen. Use the Bible Give each child a memory link card. Review today s memory link and character word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s memory link. Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 pages next week. This week in day 3 of your Hang 10 page it says to draw a picture of the Israelites marching around the city of Jericho. What are some things you could include in your drawing? (Discuss the parts of the story.) Keep using your KBC Study Bible and reading God s Word every day!

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME Playing a game to review today s Bible Connection and Character Word Option 1 - BEACH BALL BOUNCE Beach balls 5-10 (page 6) Ask kids to stand in a circle for a beach ball bounce. Explain that the object of the game is for the kids to bounce the ball in the air while their feet are firmly planted on the floor in their assigned spot. Each time the beach ball drops to the floor choose a child to answer a review question. Continue until each child has had a turn answering a question or until time runs out. Option 2 - MARCHING CIRCLE Music Ask the kids in each surf team to form a circle. Call for each surf team leader to stand on the outside of their team s circle. Play music and ask the kids to march around in their circle. When the music stops, the student that is standing in front of the surf team leader gets to answer a review question. Repeat this process until all the questions have been answered or time is called. REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. What is today s character word? (Determination) 2. What does determination mean?
