WORSHIP CELEBRATION PRELUDE *** O Perfect Love Dorothy F. Gurney Robert Johnson, Jr. ***GREETING CENTERING MOMENT Renewal begins when a person is exposed to the forces that will stretch him and help him to discover the power of Christ in the relationships where he feels least secure. A church discovers renewal when it preaches and acts in a way which motivates the members to move from their specialties into other dimensions of life. Keith Miller & Bruce Larson *CALL TO WORSHIP (Based on Psalm 111:1-6) Leader: Let us praise the Lord in the assembly of the upright! People: Let us praise the Lord in the congregation of the faithful. Leader: Let us praise the Lord, for the works of the Lord are great. People: Let us praise the Lord, for he is gracious and full of compassion. Leader: Let us praise the Lord, for he has declared to his people the power of his works. People: Let us praise the Lord with our whole heart! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN UMH #384 Love Divine, All Love Excelling *PRAYER FOR CONFESSION (in unison) (Based on John 6:51-58) Brother Jesus, you have said in your word that you are the bread of life sent down from heaven. Forgive the quarreling and spiteful ways we abuse your gift of life to us. You said in your word that you alone are eternal life to those who believe. Forgive our unbelief and unfaithful actions. You said in your word that you alone give us life. Forgive our searching for life in dead and lonely places. You said in your word that if we abide you, you would abide in us. Forgive us when we, like lost sheep, have sought comfort in far away places. You said in your word that you gave your life so that the world may have life. Forgive us when we have failed to tell that good news to those around us and to one another. Bread of heaven, come down again, feed us, and rest in our hearts. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE & PASSING OF THE PEACE UMH #431 Let There be Peace on Earth MINISTRY OF MUSIC Keith McGruder and Duane Williams *** Love Lifted Me duet Howard Smith *SCRIPTURE Ephesians 4:25-5:2 *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Liturgist: The Word of God for the people of God. HEART TO HEART Wesley Covenant Prayer I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. WORDS OF APPRECIATION The Holman United Methodist Men thank all who attended the J. Saunders Thompson-Bill Fisher Dodgers Night. We have only missed one season since 1958 (player strike). A good fellowship was had even though the home team lost. SUNDAY, AUGUST 12, 2018 Worship Celebration 8:00 A.M. & 11:00 A.M. SERMON NOTES LIVE IN LOVE SCRIPTURE EPHESIANS 4:25-5:2 Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. REFLECTION During the month of August, Bishop Brown is preaching a series of sermons on the theme in Love. According to Charles Wesley, Love is the nature and name of God. Continuing with the text of Wesley s epic hymn, Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown, God is not just Love, but pure, Universal Love, whose mercies move to me, to all. Therefore, the movement of love in the human community can be understood to be the movement of the Spirit as an offering of love for all people. The apostle Paul gives a laundry list of items mature Christians are to put away (v. 25-31). Though not intended to be an exhaustive list, Paul is offering ways for these growing Christians to imitate Christ and live in true righteousness and holiness (v. 24). While we do not earn our salvation by good works, we are called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). At the very least then, this means that in order to grow in Christian maturity, there must be intentionality and change in our habits. (See Biblical Background for more clarification.) Where are you feeling God s call to put away certain habits or attitudes? Growing in Christian discipleship requires that we put away tendencies, habits, and attitudes that are contrary to the gospel as well as take on new postures that open us to the power of God s grace (holy habits, prayer, Scripture reading, etc.). It is through these new postures and habits that we become what is seemingly impossible imitators of God for others, thus fulfilling the Greatest Commandment to love God and our neighbors. L KING AHEAD 13 th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Sunday, August 19, 2018 Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. 14 th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Sunday, August 26, 2018 Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. Inspiring the world as passionate followers of Jesus Christ so all may experience God s life-giving love. Cal-Pac UMC Annual Conference Vision Statement Father in heaven, draw us near to you. As we journey in the wilderness, guide our steps in your will. Amen 8
