About Goddess Durga Durga, in Sanskrit means "She who is incomprehensible or difficult to reach." Goddess Durga is a form of Sakti worshiped for her gracious as well as terrifying aspect. Mother of the Universe, she represents the infinite power of the universe and is a symbol of a female dynamism. The manifestation of Goddess Durga is said to emerge from Her formless essence and the two are inseparable. She is also called by many other names, such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali. In the form of Parvati, She is known as the divine spouse of Lord Shiva and is the mother of Her two sons, Ganesha and Karttikeya, and daughter Jyoti. Destroyer of demons, she is worshiped during an annual festival called Durga puja, especially popular among Bengalis. Her Appearance There are endless aspects of Durga described in the Puranas and Agamas and the iconography is consequently very varied. She is usually pictured as having ten arms holding Sword, Conch, Discus, Rosary, Bell, Winecup, Shielf, Bow, Arrow, and Spear. She is most often shown riding a lion from which comes Her august name, Simhavahini, "She who stands astride the king of beasts". She is gorgeously dressed in royal red cloth and has several ornaments decorating Her personage. Her hair is dressed up in a crown (karandamukuta) which then flows out in long luxuriant tresses that are darkly luminous and soothing to the eye. The various tools reflects the eminent supremacy that helps in controling the universe and obey Her will. Wielding Energy Goddess Durga exists eternally, always abiding in her own sweet nature and inhabits the hearts and minds of her ecstatic devotees. As Shakti power, she shapes, nurtures, and dissolves names and forms, while as subtle spiritual energy called Kundalini, She lights the lotuses fo the seven centres of awareness in the sacred human body. Goddess Durga killed the powerful demon Mahish and all his great commanders. When demonic forces create imbalance all god unite becoming one divine force called Shakti or Durga. THE HOLY BOOKS OF HINDUS Contributor Sudeb Das Sadhu Sangha In Scriptures, there are many references of Sadhu Sangha, which is popularly known as Sat Sangha. We find many such references in Kathamrita given by Bhagaban Sri Sri Ramakrishna for better understanding and practice of religion. The Sadhus or Saints with superior knowledge of religion, could explain religion better with stories and examples from life. The people who seeks deeper knowledge in religion usually takes shelter of Saints or Holy man. So, in early days, Sadhu Sangha became the primary source of learning religion. But, to-day many sources are available to enrich religion knowledge. The different examples of Sadhu Sangha, or Sat Sangha are:- 1. Books- Many books in the form of Scriptures or Holy Books are available for reading. The books with diagrams, pictures are also available for better understanding and clarity and became primary source of Sat Sangha. 2. Organized Classes, Meetings, Seminars, Discussions on religious subjects all are very important means of Sat Sangha. 3. The next important means of Sat Sangha are pre-recorded Tapes or Discs on Holy Subjects or Topics. 4. The Pre-recorded or Live Music such as Kirtan, Bhajan or many other types of spiritual songs are also treated as important mode of Sat Sangha. 5. Esthetic Movies & Dramas narrating the stories of scriptures and lives of Holy Men or Women, also became a means Sat Sangha. Therefore, all these studies such as Reading Sat Grantha (books); Attending the Classes, Lectures of Sadhus, Saints, Religious Scholars; Watching Good Religious Movies or Dramas; Listening or Participating in Religious Songs like Kirtan Bhajan etc. etc. can be assumed as Sat Sangha activities as these will help us to enrich our religious knowledge to lead better peaceful life. The Blind Children and the Elephant Once in a town there was a school for blind children. The teacher was telling the children a story about an elephant. One child asked the teacher, what an elephant is. The teacher could not describe what it was to the children. So he took them to an elephant to touch and understand what it is. They came to an elephant named Radha. All of them surrounded the animal. One boy moved his hand over the large ear of the elephant. Then he thought to himself The elephant is like a fan. Another boy held the leg of the elephant with both hands and thought The elephant is a big pillar. A third one touched his trunk and thought The elephant is a thick club. The last one poked his stomach and thought This animal is a huge jar. They came back to the school and started discussing what an elephant is. The first student said an elephant is like a fan. The second student said a elephant is like a big pillar. And the third student said the elephant is a thick club. The fourth student said an elephant is a huge jar. They all are wrong and also they are correct because they could only touch a part of the elephant, not the whole elephant. So you can not understand correctly from knowing the partial truth. Retold By Maya The Story of Surdas Part 1 Once upon a time, there was a man named Surdas. He had a great devotion to Lord Krishna, but he was born blind. One day, he went on a holy trip. After a couple minutes he fell into a well. He called to the Lord to save him, and eventually, after a week he was pulled out of the well thanks to God s grace. When he was on land, he heard Lord Krishna and Radha talking. Surdas told them that he was blind, for he was begging to see Krishna. Radha slowly went near Surdas. Krishna warned her that Surdas will catch hold of her feet. Radha asked Surdas if he would do so, and he said, How can I, if I am blind? Krishna warned Radha again. She went behind Surdas and touched him. Surdas turned and managed to catch hold of her feet. Radha escaped, but Surdas had her anklets. Part 2 Radha asked for Surdas to return her anklets. Surdas said, How do I know if these are yours? I am blind. Radha said, They are mine. Please, return them to me. If I can see you, then I will know that they are yours. Suddenly, Surdas could see! The Lord said that he can ask for any other boons he wants. Surdas said, By seeing both of your true forms, I don t want to see any other things in the world. So, please, make me blind again. What the epic says AkalBodhan The worship of Devi Durga in the month of Ashwin is called 'Akalbodhan'- an uncustomary time for commencement of the worship. It is so called since the period of this worship differs from the conventional period (during the spring - 'Basanta'). Ramayana says that when Rama was engaged in the fierce battle with Ravana, he wanted to secure the blessings of victory from Devi Durga. He held the puja to evoke the goddess during autumn to his dire plight, thereby worshiping Durga untimely (in Akal). Hence this puja is called Akalbodhon. It was customary to worship Durga with 100 neel kamals (blue lotuses). Rama could gather only 99 of them; he offered one of his eyes as a substitute of the 100th lotus. Pleased with his devotion Durga blessed him. The battle started on Shaptami and Ravana was killed at the Shandhikshan (in between) Ashtami and Navami; he was cremated on Dashami.
