Domestic Church Evangelization Retreat Scheduled August 16-19 The next Domestic Church retreat will be held in La Crosse at the Holy Cross Diocesan Center. The retreat begins on Thursday, August 16 th at 7PM and ends on the 19 th at noon. Want to love your spouse like God wants you to? Spouses know that great love is possible within the midst of the daily demands, yet at times, it can be difficult to show it as we could. Consider attending a Domestic Church retreat. Get real, concrete help so you can tap into what God has in store for you. Attending a retreat is your opportunity to begin a spiritual journey together (or deepen what already exists). It is also an introduction to Domestic Church for those interested in beginning formation in a Domestic Church circle. The next retreat is August 16-19 th in La Crosse, WI. To register for the retreat, go to: diolc.org/marriage-enrichment/. Direct all questions to aheinzen@diolc.org or call 608-791-2673. Immersion Retreat Save the date! The Immersion Retreat will be held at the Chula Vista Resort November 9-11, 2018. The theme is "150," in honor of our Diocesan Sesquicentennial, as well as, a reference to Psalm 150. This will be for all high school age students. More information is coming soon. Witness for Christ Conference August 10-11, 2018 La Crosse How do we help to cultivate a desire for God in the hearts of those who do not go to Mass on Sunday? What is necessary so that children, young people, and adults will experience Sacraments as a life-changing encounter with Christ rather than empty ritual? For skill building in these areas and more, please come and bring others from the parish to the Conference, August 10-11 at Blessed Sacrament Parish in La Crosse. To download a brochure or register online visit: http://diolc.org/catechesis/witness-for-christconference/ S t. M a r y s - B i g R i v e r Sell Those Raffle Tickets This is our main fundraiser to gather funds for the Improvement Fund. A Message From Our Pastor We continue with Part 11 of this series reviewing what Jesus Christ has revealed about the Holy Eucharist as well as the current discipline of the Church with regard to its celebration and distribution. When one is properly disposed to receive Holy Communion, what are the fruits received by the communicant? The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1391-1397) enumerates six fruits of the worthy reception of Holy Communion. (1) The first fruit is that Holy Communion augments our union with Christ. The principal fruit of receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is an intimate union with Christ Jesus. Indeed, the Lord said: He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him [John 6:56]. Life in Christ has its foundation in the Eucharistic banquet: As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me [John 6:57]... What material food produces in our bodily life, Holy Communion wonderfully achieves in our spiritual life. Communion with the flesh of the risen Christ, a flesh given life and giving life through the Holy Spirit [Presbyterorum ordinis, 5), preserves, increases, and renews the life of grace received at Baptism. This growth in Christian life needs the nourishment of Eucharistic Communion, the bread for our pilgrimage until the moment of death, when it will be given to us as viaticum (1391-1392). (2) Flowing from this, the Catechism notes that the second fruit of the worthy reception of Holy Communion is that it separates us from sin. The body of Christ we receive in Holy Communion is given up for us, and the blood we drink shed for the many for the forgiveness of sins. For this reason the Eucharist cannot unite us to Christ without at the same time cleansing us from past sins and preserving us from future sins (1393). (3) The third fruit of the worthy reception of Holy Communion is that it wipes away venial sins. As bodily nourishment restores lost strength, so the Eucharist strengthens our charity, which tends to be weakened in daily life; and this living charity wipes away venial sins. By giving Himself to us Christ revives our love and enables us to break our disordered attachments to creatures and root ourselves in Him (1394). (4) The fourth fruit of the worthy reception of Holy Communion is that it preserves us from future mortal sins. By the same charity that it enkindles in us, the Eucharist preserves us from future mortal sins. The more we share the life of Christ and progress in His friend- ship, the more difficult it is to break away from Him by mortal sin. The Eucharist is not ordered to the forgiveness of mortal sins that is proper to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Eucharist is properly the sacrament of those who are in full communion with the Church (1395). (5) The fifth fruit of the worthy reception of Holy Communion is the unity of the Mystical Body: the Eucharist makes the Church. Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it Christ unites them to all the faithful in one body the Church. Communion renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorporation into the Church, already achieved by Baptism. In Baptism we have been called to form one body. The Eucharist fulfills this call: The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread [1 Corinthians 10:16-17] (1396). (6) The final fruit of the worthy reception of Holy Communion is that the Eucharist commits us to the poor. To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest, His brethren: You have tasted the Blood of the Lord, yet you do not recognize your brother... You dishonor this table when you do not judge worthy of sharing your food someone judged worthy to take part in this meal... God freed you from all your sins and invited you here, but you have not become more merciful (Saint John Chrysostom, Hom. In I Cor, 27, 4] (1397). Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, pray for us! Blessed Solanus Casey, pray for us! Father Kevin C. Louis, STL St. Rose s Group Will be cleaning the Church on Tuesday, July 10th at 6 pm.
