Hixson Presbyterian Church October 23, 2016 Prelude Greetings Morgan Lusk Call to Worship From Hebrews 3 Christ Intercedes Prayer of Confession Responsive Reading From Isaiah 25 How Firm a Foundation How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word. What more can He say than to you He hath said, to you, who for refuge to Jesus hath fled? Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am Thy God and will still give thee aid. I ll strengthen thee, help thee and cause thee to stand, upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace all-sufficient shall be thy supply. The flame shall not hurt thee, I only design thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, no, will not desert to his foes. That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I ll never, no never, no never forsake. Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor Christ the sure and steady anchor, In the fury of the storm; When the winds of doubt blow through me, When my sails have all been torn. In the suffering, in the sorrow, When my sinking hopes are few; I will hold fast to the anchor, It will never be removed. Christ the sure and steady anchor, While the tempest rages on; When temptation claims the battle, And it seems the night has won. Deeper still then goes the anchor, Though I justly stand accused; I will hold fast to the anchor, It shall never be removed. Christ the sure and steady anchor, Through the floods of unbelief; Hopeless somehow, O my soul, now, Lift your eyes to Calvary. This my ballast of assurance, See his love forever proved. I will hold fast to the anchor, It will never be removed. Christ the sure and steady anchor, As we face the wave of death;

Prayer of Intercession Offertory When these trials give way to glory, As we draw our final breath. We will cross that great horizon, Clouds behind and life secure; And the calm will be the better, For the storms that we endure. Christ the sure of our salvation, Ever faithful, ever true! We will hold fast to the anchor, It shall never be removed. It Is Well #691 When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. Refrain: It is well with my soul; it is well, it is well with my soul. My sin - O the bliss of this glorious thought! my sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more; praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! (refrain) O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll, the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend, Even so - it is well with my soul. (refrain) God s Tithes and Our Offerings *Please fill out the friendship folder found at the end of the pew* Children ages 4 & 5 are dismissed to Children s Church My Worth is Not in What I Own Sermon Faithful Generation Robert Johnson Nehemiah 3 (page 399 in the pew Bible) We Are God s People We are God s people, the chosen of the Lord, Born of His Spirit, established by His Word; Our cornerstone is Christ alone, And strong in Him we stand: O let us live transparently And walk heart to heart and hand in hand. We are a temple, the Spirit s dwelling place, Formed in great weakness, a cup to hold God s grace; We die alone, for on its own Each ember loses fire: Yet joined in one the flame burns on To give warmth and light, and to inspire. We are the Body of which the Lord is Head, Called to obey Him, now risen from the dead; He wills us be a family, Diverse yet truly one: O let us give our gifts to God, And so shall his work on earth be done.

Benediction Postlude **Elders are available for prayer at the front of the sanctuary. Why do we do that? Reading Scripture We believe that All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable... (2 Tim. 3:16) The Scriptures are the very words of God. When they are read God speaks directly to us. Reading scripture shows our submission to His words and our willingness to sit under God as the One who gives wisdom, from [whose] mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Prov. 2:6) God also commands us to do this regularly as a part our worship. In 2 Timothy 4:13 the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy, the pastor of the church in Ephesus, to... devote yourself to the public reading of scripture. Whenever we hear scripture read or participate in a corporate reading we worship in obedience and receive from God that which is living and active (Heb. 4:12) and which always accomplishes the purposes of the Lord (Is. 55:10). Congregation Standing Please feel free to sit as necessary. CCLI#540356

Sermon Notes - Robert Johnson Faithful Generation Nehemiah 3 First, Many Hands Neh. 2:18 I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for the good work. Men and women, priests and nobles, goldsmiths, apothecaries, merchants, all seized trowel or spade, and wheeled and piled. One man puts up a long length of wall, another can only manage a little bit; another undertakes the locks, bolts, and bars for the gates. Luke 16:10 One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much Second, Sense of Ownership Finally, This Generation T. C. Finlayson To us Nehemiah s catalogue of the builders may now seem to be little more than a dry register of names. But it is not difficult to imagine how interesting it may have been for generations after it was written. As Jerusalem began to grow again in power and splendour, men would scan with eager interest the list of those who had engaged in such a brave and self-denying work. We can imagine how, centuries later, the eye of some young boy might kindle with pride and enthusiasm when he read here, in one of the sacred books, the name of some ancestor of his own, who had nobly borne his part in building up the walls of Jerusalem. I want to serve the purpose of God In my generation, I want to serve the purpose of God While I am alive, I want to give my life, For something that will last forever, Oh, l delight, I delight to do Your will. I want to build with silver and gold, In my generation, I want to build with silver and gold, While I am alive, I want to give my life For something that will last forever, Oh, l delight, I delight to do Your will. What is on Your heart? Tell me what to do, Let me know Your will, And I will follow You
