2018 Love Offering for Missions Milaca UMC will be receiving your love offering all the Sundays in May. Please mark your envelope or check with Love Offering so it can be directed accordingly. The theme of the 2018 Annual Conference session taking place May 29-June 1 in St. Cloud is Discover Joy, Live Deeply, and funds from this year s Love Offering will to go three projects: Puerto Rico Hurricane Recovery Trips (65%) In response to Hurricane Maria, Volunteers in Mission (VIM) trips from the Minnesota Annual Conference to Puerto Rico will commence in the fall. As teams are formed and team leaders are trained, most of the funds will be used for construction supplies bought and used on the island. Some of the funds will cover the purchase of hygiene kit and cleaning bucket supplies. Additional funds will be used for scholarships for first-time VIM participants. Park Avenue UMC Children s Defense Fund Freedom Schools Program (20%) The Freedom Schools Program is a six-week summer day camp experience for children. Its mission is to ensure that every child receives a healthy start, a head start, a fair start, a safe start, and a moral start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Each year, about 50 scholars are part of Park Avenue UMC s program, which aims to address the summer slide and to close the achievement gap. Mornings are spent improving reading skills. In the afternoons, children participate in enrichment activities, including art, cooking, gardening, music/dance, and physical education. Love Offering funds will cover expenses for reading curriculum materials and for young adult mentors. NUMAS Haus (15%) NUMAS Haus provides emergency shelter and support services to homeless single women and their children in New Ulm and surrounding Brown County. Adjacent and connected to First UMC in New Ulm, clients are able to live there for up to 90 days as they complete a program that includes counseling, health and financial management, parenting and food preparation skills, and obtaining access to county social services and vocational training. Upon completion, participants are encouraged to secure permanent housing but may not immediately be able to pay market-rate rent. Love Offering funds will be used to help families with transitional rent assistance for six to 12 months.

RANDOM KNOWLEDGE Word Wealth: Bless, Blessed, Blessing Bless: from Barach (bah-rahch); to bless, salute, congratulate, thank, praise, to kneel down. Barach is the root word from which baruch (Blessed One) and barachah (Blessings) are derived. In Old Testament times, people got down on their knees to receive a blessing. God gives a blessing to have a rich, full life. The first action of God, the Creator to a newly created man and woman was to bless them (Genesis 1:28) The Aaronic Benediction (from Aaron, the High Priest) epitomizes God s promise of blessing to His people. The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. In this blessing we have to bless means to enjoy an increase in prosperity because Yahweh will keep the worshiper from harm. Make his face shine upon you implies taking pleasure in the worshiper with the result that the Lord will be gracious or favorable to the worshiper. To lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace ; is the provision of all things necessary for the well-being of the recipient. In Luke 6:28, Jesus says,...bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. In this verse the root word is eulogeo (yoo-log-eh-oh), from where we get eulogy and eulogize, from eu = well or good, and logos = speech or words). Eulogeo is to speak well of, praise, extol, bless abundantly, invoke a benediction and give thanks. When God blesses people, He grants them favor and confers happiness on them. And finally, from Proverbs 31:28, Her children rise up and call her Blessed. Here Blessed comes from ashar (ah-shar). Happy, Blessed, prosperous, successful, right, contented. In Genesis 30:13, Leah have birth to a son and said, I am happy for daughters will call me Blessed. (Daughters here means sisters in the faith) And then she named her son Asher meaning Happy One. There are many more instances of bless, blessing, and blessed in Scripture. Look in a Concordance. We say God Bless You. We mean for God to bestow a full and rich life filled with goodness, love and joy and every adjective presented above. Don t forget to Count Your Blessings always and all the time. Therefore, God Bless you all! Pastor Shirley Hello, in this column, I intend to share random bits of knowledge and inspirational quotes. Things like background information on the lives and times of people from the Bible, for better understanding. Deeper definition of words and events for better clarity. And other items for inspiration and application to our daily lives. If you have any questions or suggestions, please give me a call. You can call or text me at 218-750-0663 or email me at shirley0663@gmail.com The VERY first thing I want to say is a very HUMUNGOUS THANK YOU! to everyone for support given while filling in for Pastor Joyce. So many people were willing and helpful; Dayna and the musicians, Jim Fladmore and computer operators, Melissa for leading singing, Jere for sharing preaching and general worship information. Also, There are several people I asked last minute to help out and they all stepped up and did what needed to be done to my eternal gratitude. And the whole rest of the congregation for your generous and kind thoughts. May God Richly Bless Each and Everyone, Thank you, Pastor Shirley

Fish Fry / 2018 Well another fish fry has come and gone this spring and as usual the food was the big hit! This year, as well as the last three years, we relied on purchased fish this year making our overall costs higher. I want to thank all those who donated and prepared food items for the dinner; Dale Gilbert,(for oil and supplies for salads, cheesecakes, cookers, etc.) Arne Pearson, Frank Crooms, and Jere Day for making cheesecakes, Jeanette Hanenberg for her expertise, salads, potatoes and sherbert dessert and supplies. Right now we have grossed $2649 from ticket sales and donations, bake sale and crafts, making our proceeds the highest ever! When all the bills for ads and fish are paid we will update profits and projects for the proceeds the Men s Group / church programs that will be funded. I also want to thank all the people who donated items for the decorations and their labor for there would be no successful dinner without them. Thanks especially to these groups: Kitchen staff: John Day, Johnna Schwindt, Brynn, Shawn Day, John DeMares, Ryan Quinn, Dale Gilbert family, Deb And Bruce Cochran, Arne Pearson, Mary Alley, Sharon Gilbert) Paul Ash, and Phil Anderson. I know I will forget someone to thank for all this as well, so please excuse me if I did. Hallelujah! God is so good to us! Jere Day & Men s Group

April has been a very hectic month for me and my husband. He slipped on the ice at the end of our driveway and broke his hip. He had partial hip replacement surgery and is now recovering at Elim, doing rehab therapy. He is doing very well, but, will be there a couple more weeks. April 10th was our monthly serving the Women s Connection brunch. There were 46 ladies present and they enjoyed oven baked French toast, ham slice and cantaloupe with blueberries. Several wanted the recipe and all were very pleased. Each month they thank us for serving them and our continued service. It was our 14th year of serving them. Monday, April 9th we had our meeting for the High Tea and got everything planned. The High Tea is May 2nd from 3-5pm. Keep the date open and plan to attend and you may be asked to help. Mary Martha Circle met Thursday the 19th with a small group. We didn t have much to discuss, so it was short. The Big Waters Spring Gathering was in Brainerd on Saturday, April 21st. Sue Olson, Tillie Bergstrom, Peggy Crooms and myself attended. It was beautiful weather and we had a good meeting. We received our 5 Star Unit Award and Mission Today certificate for 2017. The men served us a very delicious lunch. We were home in time to attend the Fish Dinner. Our High Tea will be this week and we will be preparing for that. Our next UMW meeting on June 21st will be a pot luck lunch at 12:00 noon at Sue Olson s home. The Circles meet again in May. Hope everyone has a nice spring May and see you in church. Audrey, UMC President
