Save me, O Lord, for the godly man hath disappeared. The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews. (1:10-2:3) In the beginning, Thou, O Lord, didst found the earth, and the heavens are the work of Thy hands; they will perish, but Thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle Thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But Thou art the same, and Thy years will never end. But to what angel has He ever said, Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a stool for thy feet? Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation? Therefore, we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message, declared by angels, was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard Him. THE GOSPEL The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. (2:1-12) At that time, when Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that He was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and He was preaching the Word to them. And they came, bringing to Jesus a paralyt-

ic carried by four men. And when they could not get near Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven. Now, some of the scribes were sitting there, reasoning in their hearts, Why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone? And immediately Jesus, perceiving in His spirit that they thus reasoned within themselves, said to them, Why do you reason thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins He said to the paralytic I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home. And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all. So that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, We never saw anything like this! Memorial Service A Memorial Service is held for the rest of the souls of the servants of God: Etab Al Ashar Joseph Hadeed May the Lord grant rest to His servants and remember them in His kingdom, now and forever. Thought for the Day We know that prayer in and of itself cannot save us, but carrying it out before God can. For when the Lord s eyes are upon us He sanctifies us, as the sun warms everything upon which it shines. St. Gregory Palamas

Spiritual Reflection on the Second Sunday of Lent On the Second Sunday of Great Lent, a Sunday when we remember St. Gregory Palamas, we need to examine ourselves as to who we are within the spiritual realm of our existence. It seems in today s world, society and culture, we continue to revert back to our primitive state of hatred, contempt and distrust. Not looking to our Savior Jesus Christ for peace in our soul, and to offer love and compassion to our brothers in need. To show Christ s mercy and forgiveness to those who have wronged, not only us personally, but on a larger scale, whatever that scale may be. In our self-examination during the Lenten Season, we need to turn away from the errors of the world, to turn closer to Christ, and ask for His intervention in the crisis that exists globally. But how can the world change if we haven t changed? Again, through our internal prayer, or as St. Gregory Palamas has taught us, through the integration of hesychasm, or silent prayer. This allows us, as Father John Meyendorff wrote in his book on St. Gregory Palamas, the positive element in spirituality, acquisition of grace and of the life in Jesus Christ, is based on the uninterrupted monological prayer. This prayer is a memory of God, a conscious activity of the human being, when the Apostle Paul recommended to pray continually (1 Thess. 5:17). As we grow spiritually in our faith, so will our inner change of heart grow as well. That neighbor that was annoying may not be so annoying after all. Friends who can sometimes be overbearing may need to be seen in a different light. Our spouses or children or relatives may act troubling towards us because we fail to understand how they love us. Our enemies may not understand us, therefore hate us, but have we tried to get into their mind set or offer an olive branch of peace to them? These are critical questions with critical answers. As Pascha quickly draws near, let our love and joy in the Resurrection of our Lord shine, not briefly flicker on that day alone, but let it glow brightly everyday of our life. May the words of the Evangelist Luke resonate in our souls, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you and pray for them who persecute you and say evil of you falsely. (Luke 6:27) Personal spiritual reflection written by Rev. Angelo Pappas, IOCC frontliner, one of 100 specially trained Orthodox clergy and laypeople who offer spiritual and emotional care to people following disasters in the United States.

The attackers targeted a stretch of villages along the southern bank of the Khabour River, where they burned homes and churches, murdered a fleeing 16-year-old boy, and abducted 150 Assyrian Christian men, women and children from their homes. For those who managed to escape the attack and seek shelter in Hasakah, International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), with its church partner, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East (GOPA), is providing food, medical attention, and emergency aid. IOCC/GOPA, which has offices in both Hasakah and Qamishli, is responding to the immediate needs of more than 1,000 displaced Syrian families seeking shelter at the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Assyrian Church in the Al Nasreh neighborhood of Hasakah with the distribution of food parcels, bedding, infant clothing and shoes. More than 600 of the survivors who fled the onslaught are children. IOCC, an ACT Alliance member, is one of the few humanitarian organizations inside Syria providing immediate assistance to displaced families and elderly who have endured four years of a brutal war. Working in 28 offices across Syria, IOCC has provided relief to 2.5 million vulnerable people inside Syria since 2012. HOW YOU CAN HELP You can help the victims of poverty and conflicts around the world by making a financial gift to the International Emergency Response Fund which will provide immediate relief, as well as long-term support through the provision of emergency aid, recovery assistance and other support to help those in need.
