However, despite there being different denominations of Christianity there are several Truths that all Christians agree on:

Light and Truth. Truth in doctrine is light and is of Jesus Christ. Error in doctrine is darkness and is of the Devil. Christ is the Light.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 2 Text: John 14:16-31, Promise of the Holy Spirit 16. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; 17. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 21. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. 22.Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father s which sent me. 25. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 3 29. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. 30. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. 31. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. Introduction: I. In John 12:36 Jesus appears to withdraw from his public ministry and begins to prepare his disciples to spread the gospel after Jesus himself departs. II. There is much to teach them, and Jesus knows his time on earth is getting short. III. Beginning with this text, and continuing through the next several lessons from the Gospel of John, we find the most concentrated teaching on the Holy Spirit to be found anywhere in scripture. Commentary: John 14:16, 17, And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I. Jesus said, A. I will ask, pray the Father... 1. The Holy spirit was to come as an answer to Jesus prayer to the father.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 4 B. and He will give you another Comforter" (Counselor). 1. The above passage shows all three persons of the trinity. Jesus asks the father for another comforter. 2. John 7:37-39, In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spoke he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) 3. The Comforter is also called the Paraclete; literally, one who is called to one s side" to give aid and comfort. 4. The Holy Spirit can also be called Advocate. 5. Jesus had been the apostles Comforter up until that time, but following his ascension, they would need another Comforter. 6. Jesus had been with the apostles only a few years, but the Holy Spirit would be with them permanently through the entire Christian age. C. so that he may be with you forever... D. even the Spirit of truth. 1. This designation indicates the function of the Holy Spirit to lead the apostles into all truth. 2. The Holy Spirit dwelled with Jesus without limit during his public ministry. John 3:34, For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. E.... whom the world cannot receive,

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 5 1. The Comforter is not offered to those living in sin. 2. Those living in sin, because of their mindset and lifestyle, wouldn t benefit by the Holy Spirit even if it were offered. F. because the world does not see him or know him; G. but you (disciples) know him, for he (after I go) remains (here) with you, and will continue to be in you H. The Comforter, Spirit of Truth lives, abides with you and shall be with you. 1. Mark 13:11, But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought before hand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit. 2. Matthew 10:19, 20, But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak; for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. 3. Luke 12:11, And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: John 14:18, I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. I. Jesus said, literally, I will not leave you as orphans. ("orphans" is another Greek word, taken into English) A. Jesus was leaving the apostles. B. He would send the Holy Spirit so they would not be left alone as orphans, bereft of their parents.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 6 II. I will come to you (in the person of the Holy Spirit). John 14:19, Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. I. Yet a little while, before long, the world will not see me anymore... A. The very next morning Jesus would be crucified. B. Thereafter the world would no longer see the physical Jesus. II. but you will see me. A. During the 40 days between the resurrection and ascension Jesus would be seen by the apostles. III. Because I live, you also will live. A. This statement of our Lord has been a wonderful comfort to millions of dying saints and their loved ones. B. Because the apostles saw Jesus following his resurrection they had the firm conviction that they would also live after death. John 14:20, In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. I. In that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and that you are in me, and I am in you. A. God is able to treat sinful man as righteous because of the indwelling of Christ, the Holy Spirit and God the Father. B. Ephesians 1:3, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: C. Galatians 2:20, I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 7 live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. D. Matthew 10:39, He that findeth his life shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. E. Salvation comes from being in Christ where God has placed all the heavenly blessings! John 14:21, He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. I. Jesus further said, A. Whosoever has my commandments and obeys them, that is the one who loves me. 1. By obeying the commands of Christ we show we love him. 2. To disobey Christ s commands is evidence that we do not yet love Christ as we should. 3. John 14:15, If you love me, you will keep my commandments. B. He that loves Jesus will be loved by God the Father. C. Jesus will also love that person. D. Jesus will manifest, show himself to that person who knows and obeys Jesus commands.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 8 John 14:22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?" I. Judas (not Iscariot) said to Jesus, A. This Judas was Thaddeus, the son of James. 1. Matthew 10:3, Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alpheus, and Lebbeus, whose surname was Thaddeus; 2. Mark 3:18, And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Canaanite, II. Why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world. A. The idea that the Messiah would establish a world wide earthly kingdom and rule over all mankind persisted even among the apostles here on the night before the crucifixion. B. John 7:3, 4, His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, show thyself to the world. C. Thaddeus/Judas seemed to be asking Jesus, What happened that you have changed your plans about revealing yourself to the world? He did not understand that the crucifixion was the greatest possible showing of himself to the world. "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself." John 12:32 John 14:23, Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. I. Jesus answered Judas (not Iscariot, also called Thaddeus),

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 9 A. If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching, word. 1. Christ was always seeking the salvation of souls. 2. John 14:15, 20, If ye love me, keep my commandments. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 3. Thaddeus dream of an earthly kingdom was of no concern to Jesus. B. My Father will love him also... C. We (God the Father and God the Son) will come to that person and live with him, make our home, our abode with him. John 14:24, He that loveth me not, keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father s which sent me. I. The person who does not love me will not obey my teachings. A. John 12:48-50, He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. B. Jesus was required to repeat many of his teachings due to the importance of what he was teaching and the slowness of the apostles to comprehend. II. The words I speak are not really mine. They belong to God the Father. A. Jesus simply was serving as God s spokesman.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 10 John 14:25, These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. I. I have spoken these things while still on earth with you, Jesus stated. A. The apostles certainly could not be trusted to get it right. B. The Holy Spirit was to be sent to guide them into all truth, to keep them on the right track. John 14:26, But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. I. The Counselor/ Holy Spirit/Comforter... II. will be sent by the Father in Christ s name. III. The Holy Spirit, Jesus said, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. A. After Pentecost, the disciples will be better able to remember. B. 1 Corinthians 4:6, And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another. C. John 16:13, Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. D. Matthew 7:24-26, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 11 upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: E. Hebrews 2:3, How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; F. Matthew 28:20, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. John 14:27, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. I. Jesus promised, I leave my peace with you, I give my peace to you. A. On the night before his crucifixion Jesus tranquilly spoke of peace. B. Philippians 4:7, And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. C. John 14:1, Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me. II. I do not give to you as the world gives. III. Do not let your hearts be troubled, do not be afraid, terrified. A. Luke 1:13, But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. B. Luke 1:30, And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 12 C. Luke 2:20, And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. John 14:28, 29, Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. I. Jesus further stated, You have heard me say, A. I am going away. 1. Jesus purpose was to strengthen the apostles enabling them to withstand the storm of his arrest, trial and crucifixion. B. I am coming back to you. II. If you loved me as you should, you would already have rejoiced that I am going to the Father, A. because the father is greater than I. 1. This contrasts the Father s heavenly glory to the Son s humanity. Jesus emptied himself and became flesh. a. Philippians 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. b. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 13 B. I have told you before it happens, C. so that when it does happen you will believe. (14:29) John 14:30, 31, Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. I. I will not speak with you much longer. A. Why not? Because the prince of this world (the devil) is coming. B. But he has nothing in me, Jesus said. 1. John 12:31, Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 2. John 10:17, 18, Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 3. Jesus gave his life. Satan did not take it from him. 4. If Satan had caused Jesus to avoid the cross he would have won. a. Satan really wanted to win in his contest with Jesus. b. Matthew 26:53, Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? c. Matthew 26:39, And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. d. Psalm 40:6-8, Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened; burnt offering

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 14 and sin offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come; in the volume of the book it is written of me. I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart. e. Matthew 6:10, Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. II. But in order that the world may learn that I love the Father, III. and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me, IV. Arise, let us go from here. A. The apostles now began preparing to leave the upper room for the Garden of Gethsemane. B. Other things said in John 15-17 were evidently said before the group left the upper room.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.org 15 Promise of the Holy Spirit Questions 1. Jesus said, I will the, and he shall give you another, that he may abide with you ; Even the of ; whom the cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither him: but you know him; for he with you, and shall be in you. 2. Jesus further said, He that hath my, and them, he it is that me: and he that me shall be of my, and I will him, and will myself to him. 3. Jesus answered, If a man me, he will keep my me, he will keep my : and my will him, and we will come unto him and make our with him. 4. Jesus said, The, which is the, whom the will send in my name, he shall you all things, and bring all things to your, whatsoever I have said unto you. 5. Jesus further said, I leave with you, my I give unto you: not as the giveth, give I unto you. Let not your be, neither let it be.
