Service Projects Introduction Service learning is a form of project based learning in which academic goals are accomplished through community service. Service learning develops citizenship and good character, and provides a rich context for academic instruction and student learning. Why? It is a powerful approach to teaching that provides kids with authentic learning experiences in which they learn academic content in a real-life, real-world context.
Service Projects Who is Doing the Service Projects? All classes Where are our Students Volunteering at? Please see lists that are being passed out
Service Projects What are the Student s Saying? Emily C. Helping out in the Pediatric Physical Therapy wing of Miller Children's Hospital This experience has opened my eyes to the Professional world of medicine. I have known for a while that I want to be a doctor and as I was able to volunteer there I wanted to become a doctor even faster. As I was watching these two 10 year olds laughing and just acting like kids I realized that's what they are: kids. No matter what they're going through they are still just kids like any other and people seem to forget that from time to time.
Service Projects What are the Student s Saying? Sofia G. While volunteering at Long Beach Memorial I hospital I have monitored babies temperature, assisted nurses, change sheets in the babies bed, helped mothers get to and from their room and NICU, sorted paperwork, filled out babies information and put up information to help the nurses and guide them and some of the tasks that they perform. I also brought mothers and their babies down to be discharged I specifically want to work in the and NICU when I'm older and this is great experience for me to see what it's like and if I can handle working with these babies and in this special field I get to experience what a true nurse in the NICU does and how much compassion, sympathy and respect they have for their job, the babies and their families
Service Projects What are the Student s Saying? Hannah V. Helping with preparing a meal for 70 homeless people Helped me with my faith because when everyone takes a seat at the tables, we all pray together and I feel as though I can connect through all of them in that prayer. To really have a conversation with them and really help to put a smile on their face.
Service Projects What are the Student s Saying? Isabella C. help grade Spanish papers for lower grade levels; also create games that help students learn the material I feel like I really can see how Christ wanted people to have child-like qualities. An eye-opening experience for me is seeing how much preparation goes into lessons, especially in a foreign language. I'm really impressed at how much teachers do.
Service Projects What are the Student s Saying? Joelle D. I help with the children's activities and movie days by creating/ preparing the crafts and supervising the activities. I also help keep the library in order by labeling, shelving, and organizing books This experience helped me with my faith my seeing the community come together to enjoy family friendly communities I usually spend my time with my family and not really my neighbors, so seeing the community together was an eye opening experience for me
