Saint Joseph Parish Community Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. **May this special day live forever in our hearts!** Amen. 12 Revised August 2018

Since the preparation and celebration of the Sacrament is a parish celebration, Catholic school retreats do not fulfill this requirement. Our Confirmation program offers one Antioch retreat each year. CONFIRMATION INTERVIEWS In spring of the second year of preparation, each Candidate will be interviewed by the Director of Faith Formation to ensure readiness of the candidate to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. If deemed necessary, the Candidate may also be required to have an additional interview with Father ST. No Candidate will be interviewed until all Service Hours Verification Forms, Sponsor s Covenant for Confirmation, make-up assignments, the Patron Saint Report and the Letter to the Pastor have been handed in. FAITH FORMATION OFFICE When sending in paperwork for your child/ren, please place it on an envelope with your child/ren s name, Confirmation year (1 or 2), and his/her Catechist s name on the front of the envelope. You may either bring it to Parish Center Office or give it to the Director of Faith Formation before class. To contact the Office of Faith Formation: Mrs. Linda Gorski, Director of Faith Formation 973-383-8413 or email: Confirmation@stjosephnewton.org Mrs. Christine Shell, Assistant to the Director 973-383-8413 or email: FFAssistant@stjosephnewton.org 2 11

YOUTH PARTICIPANT CODE OF CONDUCT Youth participants will: Project an image of Christian consideration, sensitivity and respect, being mindful of language, appearance and behavior. Refrain from inappropriate touching, verbal harassment and peer sexual harassment. Refrain from actions that could result in injury and/or damage to individuals or their property. Attend all scheduled activities with a positive attitude, arriving promptly, and staying for the entire event. Report problems of any kind to a trusted adult. Abide by the rule that the use of cell phones is prohibited during Mass, class, retreat sessions or any other events (In an emergency, students may ask the catechist or Director of Faith Formation to use their cell phone.) Cell phones will be collected at the beginning of each session and returned to the student at the end of each class session. Additional electronic devices are also not permitted from the time they enter the building until they leave. Why should I choose to prepare for Confirmation? What difference will it make in my life? UNDERSTANDING THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION The Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens the baptized and obliges them more firmly to be witnesses of Christ by word and deed and to spread and defend the faith. It imprints a character, enriched by the gift of the Holy Spirit the baptized continuing on the path of Christian initiation, and binds them more perfectly to the Church. (Canon 879) THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION...confirms Baptism When we were baptized our parents and our Godparents (Sponsors) made a commitment to raise us according to the Catholic faith and in a Catholic home, so that our lives would reflect the life and love of Christ. In and through the Sacrament of Confirmation, we as mature Christians confirm this commitment and assume full responsibility for living out the call of being the presence of Christ in our world....completes the Sacraments of Initiation The Sacraments of Initiation are: Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Confirmation is the final Sacrament which we receive. However, all sacraments point toward the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Once one receives this Sacrament, they have full membership and are confirmed in the faith community. RETREAT Saint Joseph Confirmation Program requires each candidate to attend a retreat experience in preparation for Confirmation. All retreats must be made at Saint Joseph Parish only. In order to be credited with fulfilling the retreat requirement, the candidate must be in attendance for the entire retreat. Late arrivals and/or early departures do not fulfill this requirement....bestows upon us the Gift of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit does not all of a sudden appear at Confirmation. Rather, it is we who all of a sudden recognize, acknowledge and celebrate the gift of the ever-present Holy Spirit in the midst of our parish community and in our personal lives as well. 10 3

Please Note:...is a commitment to embrace Christianity Being Christians is not only our faith, but it is who we are! To embrace Christianity is to share ourselves unconditionally with others the way we share a loaf of bread with our friends. Confirmation is a commitment to love without condition, the way Jesus who is the Bread of Life loves us....is a Commitment to accept and practice Roman Catholicism Roman Catholicism is our religion. It is the Tradition through which we choose to express who we are as Christians. Therefore, Confirmation is a commitment to recognize, acknowledge and celebrate this tradition....is a Commitment to Share the Gift of Ourselves with the Parish Family of Saint Joseph We believe that all of us make up the Body of Christ. As the parish community of Saint Joseph Church, we believe that when we gather around the Table of the Lord, we do not gather as individuals, but rather we gather as One Body united in Christ. We commit ourselves to share the gift of life with one another in order to build up the Body of Christ. When one of us is missing we are incomplete. 1. All service hours must be documented on the Service Hours Verification Form and signed by a supervisor of the Candidate at the chosen area of service (signature must be other than parent/guardian). The forms must be filled out completely, listing where the student volunteered as well as listing the specific work that was done. (The Candidate must do this service without receiving any payment for their time). 2. Service hours must be done for non-profit, charitable organizations in the Newton community. 3. Any service performed for the parish community is acceptable (e.g. Ministers of Hospitality, Altar Servers, Readers, Faith Formation Aides, etc.). 4. Service hours that are not acceptable are: those required by the local high schools, chores at home, babysitting within the family or for friends, lawn and yard work for family or friends, bible school at another church. Hours done outside of our church or Newton community will not be accepted unless prior authorization has been given in writing by the Director of Faith Formation. It is suggested that you retain copies of all documentation handed in to avoid any problems with misplaced paperwork. We look forward to journeying with our youth as they grow in mind and spirit by their positive attitude, dedicated service and willingness to reach out to our less fortunate brothers and sisters who are in need....is a Beginning In our highly academic society, it is very easy for us to mistake Confirmation as a graduation from the parish or a Rite of Passage. It is very tempting for us to see it as an end. However, in truth, Confirmation is a beginning that celebrates a new chapter in our journey of faith to live more fully as committed and active members of the Catholic Church and in particular the local church of Saint Joseph. 4 9

CONFIRMATION SERVICE HOURS In order to help the youth of our parish community understand the importance of service in the life of a Catholic Christian, to serve our brothers and sisters in need, each Candidate must fulfill the following requirements of service to the community: FIRST YEAR: 20 Hours Twenty (20) hours of community service must be performed during the FIRST YEAR of Confirmation classes. These hours are to be earned by service to Saint Joseph Parish Community or the Newton Community (e.g. Nursing facilities such as Bristol Glen, Barn Hill and Valley View, the Head Start Program, Project Self Sufficiency, cleaning the church on Saturdays, serving at parish events or assisting in the Faith Formation Program are just a few examples of such service hours). Documentation for Year I Service Hours is due by June 1 st. Service hours are to be done each year; if additional volunteer hours are accrued in the first year, they may not be used toward the amount needed in the second year. Additionally, the students are asked to vary their service hours in order to get a fuller experience of helping others. Therefore, no more than 50% (or 10 hours for Year 1) will be accepted from any one place, unless the service is earned through helping out at Saint Joseph Church. PLEASE NOTE: Service outside the Newton area must be approved by the Director of Faith Formation prior to the acceptance of donated hours. REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE 1. A Confirmation Candidate must have sequential attendance in the Faith Formation Program from Grades 1-8. (Any Candidate who does not meet this requirement will be evaluated and may be required to attend supplemental classes prior to enrollment in the Confirmation Program). 2. A Candidate must be willing to participate fully in ALL PHASES of the two ( 2) year Confirmation Program (which include service hours, classes and an annual retreat). 3. The Candidate must make their own informed and mature decision whether they wish to receive this Sacrament. 4. No candidate will be accepted simply because of age! REQUIREMENTS FOR RECEPTION OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION A baptized person may receive the Sacrament of Confirmation when evidence of readiness on the part of the Candidate has been demonstrated. SECOND YEAR: 10 Hours Ten (10) hours of community service must be performed during the SECOND YEAR of Confirmation classes. These hours are to be earned by service to Saint Joseph Parish Community or the Newton Community (see suggestions above). Candidates may begin to accrue service hours for Year 2 once the school year has ended in June for Year 1. EVIDENCE OF READINESS INCLUDES: Understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation as a personal commitment to assume a fuller responsibility in the community, in particular ministries and service aspects of parish life. A sense of Unity with the parish community as seen by their attendance and full participation in weekly Sunday Mass. This can be seen as one of the criteria by which a Candidate can judge his/her own readiness to receive this sacrament. Basic understanding of Christianity including a deepened understanding of who Jesus is, His teaching and the role of the Church in continuing His mission. The Candidate should be able to express his/her faith in ways which others can easily understand, respect and appreciate. 8 5

Witnessing in the way the Candidate lives their Christian life. The Candidate may be called upon to witness to his/her faith in a world often dominated by outside pressures. His/her actions should reflect their love for God and for others. Total participation in all aspects of the Confirmation Preparation Program including: weekly Sunday Mass, retreats, interviews, service hours and other liturgical celebrations. CLASSES We use Chosen as our classroom curriculum. It is twenty four (24) lesson plans which build upon each other in order to give a more thorough approach to our Catholic faith. Each lesson has videos which are relevant to the topic and hopefully appealing to the youth. The students have at home work in the workbook (that is used for both years) which needs to be completed on a weekly basis. This reinforces the lessons they have learned in their classes. Additional classes are scheduled in the calendar year to complete the preparation for the Sacrament. THE DETERMINATION FOR READINESS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PASTOR, THE DIRECTOR OF FAITH FORMATION AND THE CATECHISTS FOR THE CONFIRMATION PROGRAM. RITE OF ACCEPTANCE The Rite of Acceptance will be celebrated at a weekend liturgy during the first year of the Confirmation Program in order to involve the entire parish community in the journey of faith by the youth. LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS Each Candidate is called to be an active participant in the communal life of their church. Sunday Mass is the best way to experience their community, as well as deepen their faith and personal relationship with the Lord. As a Candidate, they are required and expected to attend Mass each and every week! ATTENDANCE Confirmation Candidates are REQUIRED to attend a retreat. Reconciliation is required of all first year students even if they attend a Catholic High School. They are to be on time for meetings and prepared for class. Leaving a class early is not permitted. If the student cannot attend a meeting due to illness or a family emergency, a parent/guardian must notify the Office of Faith Formation either by telephone or email explaining why the student will be absent. [Sports events/practices, trips, weekends away, homework and all other reasons are not acceptable for being absent]. A make-up assignment must be completed for any session missed regardless of the reason. The Candidate and/or parent/guardian will be contacted after an absence by the Faith Formation Office and given the make-up assignment. It is the responsibility of the Candidate to complete the work missed and hand it in at the next class session. If a Candidate misses sufficient sessions over the two year period, the Candidate and his/her parents/guardians may be asked to meet with the Director of Faith Formation concerning continued participation in the program. 6 7
