The growing seed THE WORD Supplies: Teacher s Bible with bookmark at Mark 4:27; picture of a farmer planting seeds, Growing Seed Packet craft sample, large seed, cup of dirt Teacher Note: You may leave the seed in the dirt. Additional seeds have been provided for the next teacher. Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Let s reach deep in our pockets and pull out our listening ears. Reach in your pocket and cup your hands behind your ears as if listening. Do you know where we get plants from? (Seeds.) That s right, seeds. If we put a seed in dirt, water it, and give it sunshine, it will grow up into a plant. What kind of plants do you like? (Flowers, vegetables, fruit, trees, etc.) I brought a seed with me today. Let s put it in some dirt, so it can grow. Place the seed on top of the dirt into the cup. Push it down or ask a child to push it down into the dirt. It takes time, but with water and sunshine, this seed will grow into a plant. Let s listen to a story Jesus told about a growing seed. Handle the Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Mark 4:27. WATCH THE WORD: MARK 4:26-29 Read the story below or retell the passage in your own words. To illustrate the story, show a picture of a farmer planting seeds from a children s Bible, the coloring page, or other source. A farmer plants a tiny seed; The seed grows night and day. It grows when the farmer falls asleep; It grows when he s wide awake. It grows from a seed to a great big stalk. The farmer asks, How does it grow? The One who makes it grow is God. The Bible tells me so! What did the farmer plant? (A seed.) What happened to the seed? (It grew into a plant.) Who makes the plants grow? (God.) Page 6 of 11
