THE SIBLING WAVE L ENGTH ב ה Sponsored by the Win a $25 Gift Card to ANY STORE! See the editor's letter for details. The Sparkling Coins Reb Gavriel was a devoted Chossid of the Alter Rebbe. For 25 years, Reb Gavriel and his wife, Chana Rivka, were childless. Reb Gavriel was a successful merchant living in the city of Vitebsk. Sadly, hard times fell on Reb Gavriel and Chana Rivka, and they quickly lost most of their fortune. During this time, the Alter Rebbe was collecting money for Yidden who were wrongly imprisoned. Reb Gavriel was known to be someone who would usually donate a large sum to this special mitzvah of Pidyon Shvuyim, but sadly now he was not VOLUME 5, ISSUE 3 KISLEV 5778 Dear Shluchim & Shluchos, What a month Cheshvan was - a little quiet after a busy Tishrei. It is good to have quiet after a busy month, not to mention a busy Kislev ahead. I am sure you will be helping your parents making farbrengens, big menorah lightings, and Chanukah parties. The Tzemach Tzedek always made a special Chanukah party with his family on the fifth night of Chanukah. This custom was started by the Alter Rebbe, and the Mitteler Rebbe continued it on. It was called a Latkes Avent meaning a latkes evening. This was a time that different Rebbeim used to give Chanukah gelt to their children and grandchildren. Why was it on the fifth night of Chanukah? Why not on the first or last night? Because the fifth night is the only night that can never fall out on Shabbos. Hope you enjoy reading this month s issue of The Sibling Wave Length. We look forward to all of your emails and answers to the questions of the month. Freilichen Chanukah! (Continued from page 1) able to. Chana Rivka heard of her husband s dilemma. What could she do so that he would have money to give to this important mitzvah? Suddenly she had an idea. Chana Rivka sold her finest jewelry so her husband would have money to give to their Rebbe. She tooks the coins she got in exchange for her jewelry, and polished them so that they sparkled beautifully. She packed the coins and gave them to her husband to bring to the Alter Rebbe. Rabbi Gavriel gave the bag of coins to the Alter Rebbe. The Alter Rebbe looked at the contents and froze in deep thought. Tell me, continued the Rebbe, where are these coins from? Of all the gold, silver and copper which the Yidden gave to the building of the Mishkan, nothing was as bright as the Kiyor. Tell me, continued the Rebbe, where are these coins from? Reb Gavriel told the Alter Rebbe of how his business was lacking success and how his wife had sold her jewelry. The Alter Rebbe put his head down and kept it down for a while. When he picked up his head he benched Reb Gavriel with long life, healthy children, and success in business. He finished off by telling him to close his business and start dealing with diamonds. Reb Gavriel and his wife were blessed with many children, B H. They lived many happy years together. Reb Gavriel lived to the age of 110, and his wife passed away two years later. Think About It! Tell us about a time when you gave up something to help others, just like Chana Rivkah did. Email your response to yossi@yaldei.com and you will be entered into a raffle for a $25 gift card to the store of your choice! See below for some answers to last month's question! Think About It! Last month s Think About It question was: Was Reb Menachem Nochum right for giving of his share in Olam Haba? Below are some of the responses we received. Remember to answer the think about it question of this month and you will be entered into a raffle. The winner receives a $25 gift card to the store he or she wishes! Just email your response to yossi@yaldei.com. Good luck!! You should not give up your spot in Olam Haba. It is something that is for you. Hashem wants you to have it and you shouldn t give it away. -Menachem, age 9 I think Reb Menachem Nachum did the right thing. It is his spot in Olam Haba and he may do with it as he wishes. When something is yours you may do what you wish with it. -Yael WINNER OF THE RAFFLE: Reb Menachem Nachum was a big tzadik. I am sure if he gave away his space in Olam Haba Hashem will give him another one. He wanted the Yidden of that town to do a big mitzvah, and he did what he needed to make sure they had a mikvah. -Chaya 2 THE SIBLING WAVE LENGTH Kislev 5778

"Hi My brother has Spina Bifida. How does it form and how can it be prevented?" -Shmueli, age 8 Thanks for your question. Spina Bifida forms when a baby s back bone, known as the spine, does not form properly during pregnancy. When the spine is not formed properly it causes many nerves to become damaged. Research is still developing on Spina Bifida, and doctors and scientists aren t 100% sure what causes it. Doctors says that an increase in a vitamin called Folic Acid while a mother is pregnant can decrease chances of Spina Bifida up to 70%. Have a question relating to special needs? Email it to yossi@yaldei.com and we will IY"H get it answered for you. J Words~of~Wisdom J The last day of Chanukah is called Zos Chanukah meaning this is Chanukah. How did the last night of Chanukah get this name? The Beis Yosef explains: Really the celebration of Chanukah should only be seven days instead of the eight that we celebrate. Why is this? The oil was enough to last one day and it lasted eight. So it s a miracle that the oil lasted an extra seven days, not eight. The Beis Yosef continues, the Yevanim wanted to stop three specific mitzvos: the mitzvah of Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh, and bris milah. In an eight day period starting on Chof Hay Kislev you will have at least one Shabbos. You will also have Rosh Chodesh as one of the days of Chanukah. So we have an eight day Yom Tov to remember the mitzvah of bris milah which is performed on the eighth day of a boy's life. If a baby was born on the first day of Chanukah, the last day of Chanukah would be his bris. When Avraham Avinu was having his bris, he said zos berisi meaning "this is my agreement between me, my descendants and You, Hashem." Since the eighth day of Chanukah is celebrated because of a bris, this day is known as Zos Chanukah. THE SIBLING WAVE LENGTH Kislev 5778 3

Upcoming Month Of... כסלו כסלו א' Rosh Chodesh Kislev - The REbbe Came Home The day was Shemini Atzeres 5738. The Rebbe suffered a heart attack during Hakofos. For a little over a month the Chassidim didn t see their Rebbe. Finally on Rosh Chodesh Kislev the Rebbe left his office for his house. This day has become a day of celebration and joy for Chassidim. This day is also the birthday of the Rashag, Rabbi Shmaryahu Gurary, who was the son-in-law of the Frierdiker Rebbe and brother-in-law of the Rebbe. כסלו ט י THe Mitteler Rebbe's Birthday & Yartzeit For the first 14 years that the Alter Rebbe and Rebbetzin Sterna were married, they were only blessed with daughters. The Alter Rebbe asked the Maggid of Mezritch for a bracha for a son. A year later, a boy was born to them. They named him Dovber after the Maggid of Mezritch, who had passed away a shortly before. On Yud Kislev the Mitteler Rebbe was released from prison. They accused him of being a traitor and sending money to the Turkish government, the enemy of the Czar. In reality, the Mitteler Rebbe had sent money to poor Yidden in Eretz Yisroel, which was under Turkish rule at the time. Less than a year later, on his birthday, the Mitteler Rebbe was niftar. He is buried in the city of Niezhin. כסלו י ד The Rebbe & Rebbetzin's Wedding Anniversary On this day our Rebbe and Rebbetzin got married. Thousands of Yidden from around Europe traveled to be at the wedding held in Tomchei Temimim in Warsaw, Poland. Sadly, the Rebbe s parents were not in attendance as they didn't have the correct papers to leave Russia. Back home in Dnepropetrovsk, the Rebbe s parents made a celebration for the local Yidden. On this day the Rebbe said to the Chassidim, it was the day that bound me to you, and you to me. This day is also the birthday of Yaakov's first son, Reuvain. Reuvain was supposed to get a double portion in the land of Eretz Yisrael, but it was ultimately given to Yosef. When the brothers were jealous and wanted to kill Yosef, it was Reuvain who persuaded them to sell him into slavery rather than kill him. 4 THE SIBLING WAVE LENGTH Kislev 5778

כסלו י ט Yudוסה Tes Kislev Yud Tes Kislev is the yahrtzeit of the Maggid Of Mezritch, who was the Rebbe of our Alter Rebbe. The Maggid was the Rebbe of all the Chassidim, and was a student of the Baal Shem Tov. On this day the Alter Rebbe was released from prison. He had been emprisioned in the Peter Paul fortress in Petersburg, Russia. The Russians accused the Alter Rebbe of spreading Torah which threatened the authority of the Czar of Russia. After 53 days, the Alter Rebbe was released from prison. The Alter Rebbe was saying tehillim and was up to the words "Pada Beshalom" when he found out that he would be released. This has become a niggun that we sing on this day. Yud Tes Kislev is known as the Rosh Hashana of Chassidus. YOU BE THE AUTHOR! Last month the question was: How has having a special needs sibling made you a better friend?" Below are a few of the responses we received: Hi, I am Laibel and I am 10. Having a sister with special needs makes me a better friend. I am a very patient person because of it. I always have to wait for my sister, so I am used to waiting for others. I don t try to rush my friends because I know that I can t rush Mushka, my sister, so I don t rush them either. Hi, I am Levi and I am 12 years old. Having a brother with special needs has made me a much better person. I am a better friend to my friends. I never judge them, as I wouldn t want anyone to judge my brother. I let others choose first at things as I always let my brother Zevi get his pick first, so I am used to getting seconds. People tell me I am easygoing, but I know that I just want everyone around me to be happy. WINNER OF THE $25 GIFT CARD TO ANY STORE Hi! I 'm Shayna and I am 11. Having a special needs sibling has made me a better friend because when I see someone who looks a little different I remember that people may think that about my brother, and I still love him. So I should become friends with those kids. This month's question: "Your special sibling starts asking guests socially inappropriate questions. What should you do? Email your response to yossi@yaldei.com to be included in the raffle. Good luck! THE SIBLING WAVE LENGTH Kislev 5778 5

Hidden Gifts CHAPTER 2 Mendy Last month we heard from Chaya about dinner at their household. At the end their father called a family meeting. Continue reading to see what happens in Chapter Two. We were six kids in our family till now. And then, to our shock and delight, Tatty and Mommy told us that we were going to have another one. Baby number seven of the Cohen family. It was so exciting. I ve always loved babies and children. Playing them with them was so much fun. I played with my younger siblings a lot, especially on days when we had events in our Chabad House, so that Tatty and Mommy could focus on the event and the people coming. It was Shabbos afternoon. Tatty and I were sitting by the table after the seudah, learning a sicha together. Learning with Tatty was geshmak. He explained everything so well, made everything we learnt so real to me and I always felt so alive after learning with him. I m lucky to have the chance to learn every week with my father. Well, Mendy, that s it for today, Tatty said when we finished. I closed the likkutei sichos and leaned back in my chair. That was a good sicha. I was about to get up and go outside to find Levik so that we could play a ball game together but then I saw a funny look on Tatty s face. He looked like he was thinking very deeply about something and there was something sad there as well. Tatty? I ventured timidly. He blinked and I saw his eyes refocus. Yes, Mendy? What are you thinking about? He gave a short laugh. You want to know what I m thinking about? I nodded. He stroked his beard. I m thinking of something to do l iluy nishmas Zeidy, so that his neshama could have an aliyah. My Zeidy passed away three months ago. It was very hard for my father, I know, to lose his own fataher. I cried a lot when Mommy told me the news. Zeidy was sick for several months but I never imagined that he would pass away. It was a real blow for us. I want to hire a sofer to write a Sefer Torah in his memory and then we would use that Sefer Torah in our Chabad House in shul every week on Shabbos, Tatty said. I jumped up from my seat. Tatty! That s such a great idea! It would be a really nice thing to do in order for his neshama to have an aliyah. He sighed and I sat back down, concerned. What s wrong, Ta? It s very expensive, Mendele, he informed me. I have to find a way to raise money for it. I bit my lip. Maybe we can make a fundraising event? I suggested. Maybe. He smiled at me and stroked my cheek. You re a good boy. Don t worry. Im yirtze Hashem, we ll find a way to get the money and Zeidy will have a beautiful Sefer Torah. Im yirtze Hashem, I repeated fervently and left the room to find Levik. A Sefer Torah for Zeidy. It had to happen. It had to. But how? To be continued next month THE SIBLING WAVE LENGTH Kislev 5778 7
