About Our Festival of Lessons & Carols Welcome to our annual Festival of Scriptures & Songs service. This historic service engages our minds and grips our hearts as the drama of redemption is proclaimed to us from Genesis to Revelation. We hear the Scriptures read and briefly explained from nine passages, tracing the history of salvation. It begins with the promise of a Savior to Adam and Eve, moves to the promises announced to the Patriarchs and through the Prophets, culminates with the birth of the God-man in the Gospels, but looks forward to his glorious return which will bring peace on earth. Between each Scripture reading and lesson, we respond by singing sacred hymns, rich in theology, which exalt the person and work of Christ. This service follows closely the pattern of the famous Christmas Eve celebration from King s College Cambridge. Every year on Christmas Eve a festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is held in King s College Chapel. The Festival was first introduced in 1919. It was later broadcast in 1928 and is now broadcast to millions of people around the world. The service includes carols and readings from the Bible. We hope this service causes you to reflect with wonder and awe upon the great significance of the incarnation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to trust in Him alone for salvation, and to look forward with hope to His second coming. The New Testament Fulfillment in the First Coming of Christ Fourth Lesson: Luke 1:26-38; Matthew 1:18-25 Summary: The angel announces the coming of the Savior. 3 O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer Our spirits by Thine Advent here; Disperse the gloomy clouds by night, And death s dark shadows put to flight. 4 O come, Thou Key of David, come, And open wide our heavenly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery.... And [the angel Gabriel] came to her and said, Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you! But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her,

Page 6 of 12 Sunset Drive & Pacific Avenue, Brookside Hills, Cainta, Rizal Page 7 of 12 Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb an bear a son. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. And Mary said to the angel, How will this be, since I am a virgin? And the angel answered her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy the Son of God... (Matthew 1:18-25) But as [Joseph] considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. (After each Gospel reading) Minister: The Gospel of the Lord. Congregation: Praise be to you, O Christ! Carol: Angels from the Realms of Glory st. 1-4 1 Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o er all the earth, You who sang creation s story, Now proclaim Messiah s birth; : Come and worship! (2X) Worship Christ the newborn King. 2 Shepherds, in the field abiding, Watching o er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the infant Light; Fifth Lesson: Luke 2:1-16 Summary: St. Luke tells the story of the birth of Jesus. 3 Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar, Seek the great Desire of Nations; You have seen his natal star; 4 Saints in humble pray r now bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord descending In His temple shall appear; In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered... And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
