When we think of labor day, we should also think of the dignity of the laborer, one of the important aspects of this holiday. We should celebrate those who labor and how the work is so important to us and our dignity as people. i know that as i gained strength and got to feeling better, i couldn t wait to get back to my work as pastor. although i took very seriously the fact that i needed rest to get back to being able to say mass, i longed to be part of the labor of my parishes and join my staff members in their work of building the kingdom of god. another thing we should focus on every labor day is ora et labora, pray and labor. how intertwined prayer is with work can both enhance our work experience and help us know that our labor is something that we can lift up in prayer. amen? amen! lord on this labor day, we thank you for the blessing of work. We ask for strength to complete each day. We ask for rest when we are weary. We ask your guidance for everyone seeking employment, and we ask that you be with those whose faces we might never see but who work tirelessly each day for the good of us all. amen. st e Wa R dsh i P of f i na nce collections for the Week ending aug. 12 St. Anthony $2,865.70 St. CeCiliA $11,021.00 St. margaret-st. e a s t s i d e fa i t h 6 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 A Summer with the Saints SAint louise de marillac louise was born in august of 1591. her husband died thirteen years after their marriage, leaving louise with a son. saint vincent de Paul was her confessor. vincent organized groups of men and women to help the poor and sick in each parish, and from them, with the help of louise de marillac, sprang the establishment of the daughters of charity of st. vincent de Paul, dedicated to the bodily and spiritual service of the poor. louise drew up a rule of life for the growing community. ten years later, the church approved this religious family. vincent said that the chapel of sisters is the parish church, their cloister the streets of the city and the wards of the hospitals. vincent found in louise a woman of clear mind, great courage, and marvelous self-sacrifice in spite of her feeble health. she was most willing to humble herself in doing works of charity. louise was always motherly in dealing with the sisters as well as the poor and the sick. in her last days she said to her grieving sisters: be diligent in serving the poor. love the poor, honor them, my children, as you would honor christ himself. she died on march 15, 1660. O God, You inspired St. Louise to strive for perfect charity and so attain Your Kingdom at the end of her pilgrimage on earth. Strengthen us through her intercession that we may advance rejoicing in the way of love. focus on J ustice 7 Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good. today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. in addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption. consequently, the church teaches, in the light of the gospel, that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person, and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide.
