Jesus Encounter with Phillip and Nathanael By Mark Mayberry 9/13/2009 John 1:43-51... 43 The next day He purposed to go into Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him, Follow Me. 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 46 Nathanael said to him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit! 48 Nathanael said to Him, How do You know me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. 49 Nathanael answered Him, Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel. 50 Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these. 51 And He said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. 43) Philip, one of the Twelve, is found in fifth place in the apostolic lists, after the two pairs of brothers: Peter-Andrew, James-John (Matt. 10:2-3; Mark 3:16-18; Luke 6:13-14; Acts 1:13). Matthew 10:2-3... 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Mark 3:16-18... 16 And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), 17 and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, Sons of Thunder ); 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; Luke 6:13-14... 13 And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; Acts 1:13... 13 When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. Follow me (cf. Matt. 4:18-20; 9:9; etc.).

Matthew 4:18-20... 18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Matthew 9:9... 9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector s booth; and He said to him, Follow Me! And he got up and followed Him. 44) Bethsaida was a town on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, the home of Philip, Andrew and Peter (cf. also John 12:21), which Jesus repeatedly visited (Luke 9:10-11; Mark 6:45-46). Here He healed the blind man (Mark 8:22-26). He also denounced the city for its unbelief (Luke 10:13; Matt. 11:21). John 1:44... 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. John 12:21... 21 these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Luke 9:10-11... 10 When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. Taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called Bethsaida. 11 But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing. Mark 6:45-46... 45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. 46 After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray. Mark 8:22-26... 22 And they came to Bethsaida. And they brought a blind man to Jesus and implored Him to touch him. 23 Taking the blind man by the hand, He brought him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, Do you see anything? 24 And he looked up and said, I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around. 25 Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly. 26 And He sent him to his home, saying, Do not even enter the village. Luke 10:13... 13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. Matthew 11:21... 21 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 46) Nazareth was held in low esteem, because of its rural and remote location, and proximity to Galilee of the Gentiles (Isa. 9:1-2; Matt. 4:12-16; John 7:41, 52). 2

Isaiah 9:1-2... 1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. Matthew 4:12-16... 12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: 15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles 16 The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned. John 7:41... 41 Others were saying, This is the Christ. Still others were saying, Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? John 7:52... 52 They answered him, You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee. 47) Nathanael was an honorable man who did not take advantage of others through craft, treachery, or underhanded methods. Deceit was characteristic of the Jews leaders (Matt. 26:3-5; Mark 14:1-2), false teachers (Acts 13:6-10; 2 Cor. 11:12-15), and sinners in general (Rom. 1:28-32; 3:9-18). However, it is wholly lacking in Jesus Christ (1 Pet. 2:21-23), and his faithful followers (1 Pet. 2:1-2; 3:10-12). Matthew 26:3-5... 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, named Caiaphas; 4 and they plotted together to seize Jesus by *stealth and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, Not during the festival, otherwise a riot might occur among the people. Mark 14:1-2... 1 Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize Him by *stealth and kill Him; 2 for they were saying, Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people. Acts 13:6-10... 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, 10 and said, You who are full of all *deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord? 2 Corinthians 11:12-15... 12 But what I am doing I will continue to do, so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the 3

matter about which they are boasting. 13 For such men are false apostles, *deceitful [1386] workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. Romans 1:28-32... 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, *deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. Romans 3:9-18... 9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; 10 as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one; 11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; 12 All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one. 13 Their throat is an open grave, With their tongues they keep *deceiving [1387], The poison of asps is under their lips ; 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness ; 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood, 16 Destruction and misery are in their paths, 17 And the path of peace they have not known. 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 1 Peter 2:21-23... 21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any *deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 1 Peter 2:1-2... 1 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all *deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 1 Peter 3:10-12... 10 For, The one who desires life, to love and see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking *deceit. 11 He must turn away from evil and do good; He must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, And His ears attend to their prayer, But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. Though separated by time and location, Jesus knowledge of Nathanael s action was a demonstration of divine omniscience (Psalm 139:7-12; Prov. 15:3; Jer. 23:23-24). Psalm 139:7-12... 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 4

Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night, 12 Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You. Proverbs 15:3... 3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Watching the evil and the good. Jeremiah 23:23-24... 23 Am I a God who is near, declares the Lord, And not a God far off? 24 Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill the heavens and the earth? declares the Lord. 50-51). As Jacob s dream signified God s presence and providential protection (Gen. 28:10-22), Nathanael also would observe convincing evidence of Immanuel. Genesis 28:10-22... 10 Then Jacob departed from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head, and lay down in that place. 12 He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants. 14 Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. 17 He was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. 18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19 He called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I take, and will give me food to eat and garments to wear, 21 and I return to my father s house in safety, then the Lord will be my God. 22 This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You. 5
